The Prophet ﷺ is reported to have said, "Verily you shall conquer Constantinople. What a wonderful leader will her leader be, and what a wonderful army will that army be!" [Musnad Ahmad, Al Hakim, al Jami’ al Saghir] 800 years later, on this day, 21-year-old Sultan Mahmud II of the Ottoman Empire, known as Sultan Mahmud the Conqueror, conquered Constantinople (today: Istanbul) after a 53-day siege. The conquest of Constantinople had an important place in Islamic history, bringing an end to the Byzantine and Roman empires that lasted for more than 1300 years. Also, after this victory came a new turn in the Ottoman Empire and the Islamic world.
