write EVERY DAY. here's how.

where inspiration fails, habit will always have your back. this is why it's important to build writing into your life as a habit, if you ever want to finish a project or improve your skills.

back in 2018, i (nat) was a college student without much going for me. i was feeling creatively stifled and insecure and like i didn't have TIME to write good. and i was right. i didn't have time to write GOOD. but i did have time to write SOMETHING. so that january, i built the habit. i wrote every single day in 2018, and almost every single day since.

because once you establish the habit, it becomes safer to skip a day (or three days) here and there. you will at least THINK about writing every day, even if you go straight from work to social plans to bed, or you're on vacation, or you're too sick to write. and that thinking is part of the habit!

here are the tips i followed to make this happen.

-pick a reasonable goal. starting off, mine was 300 words. now, i don't follow a goal, because the habit is so solid i don't need to. but 300 words is easy and quick. and if you give a pig a pancake, they'll probably have days where they write 500, 1000, even 3k words.

-log your word count. this is interesting to look back on every new year's eve, and it provides accountability. do this however you like; a spreadsheet, a physical notebook, a note in your phone, each day's section in your planner, whatever works for you. i have a channel in my personal discord server where i log mine.

-do NOT edit as you go. just write write write. if you feel like something you wrote needs work, yeah, it probably does-- everything needs to be edited, but that's a problem for later. highlight sentences you can't get right or make note of them to edit LATER. but do not edit as you go!

-write self-indulgent crap. fanfiction, shitty poetry, manifestos, rants, self insert fantasy romance, whatever floats your boat. having a shitty self-indulgent backup story to work on when i didn't feel like writing for the projects i cared about really helped get me in the habit. write for an audience of one!

-journal if you can't write. this may not necessarily build your skill as much as writing regular prose would, but it does help you maintain the habit and it can be useful in lots of other ways.

-think outside the box. write trivia questions. write a list of your favorite childhood toys. write a review of the book you're reading. i'm writing this post, that's going toward my word count for the day. again, this is still writing, and it helps maintain the habit.

-get comfortable writing on your phone. this took me a long time, but making it over this hurdle has saved my habit so many times.

you'll be surprised at the cool shit you end up writing on those days when you swore you weren't inspired enough. and you'll be delighted with how much progress you will make honing your craft!

My Love Will Never Die — What do you think makes a good fictional romance? What sort of tropes?

for me, enemies to lovers >>> instalove. i have a mega soft spot for friends to lovers too, there’s something about the ambiguity of human affection that’s just *chef’s kiss*

also please please make the obstacles to romance realistic 😭😭. now i love me a comedy of errors/miscommunication as much as the next person, but if the slow burn is beyond the realm of feasibility i might just pull my hair out. (these are all unfounded opinions though, as i’ve never properly tried my hand at writing romance! so everyone who does is a master cupid in my eyes :D)

about my writing

i write mostly fiction/sci-fi/fantasy

almost all of my characters have powers or magic or aren’t even completely human

i like to write really cool fight scenes, i don’t care if they seem unreasonable, pretend it’s an anime idk. they have superpowers they can do anything

i like to explore the darker elements of these powers and worlds, so a lot of my work is nsfw bc of gore and stuff like that

like incorporating horror into my stories as well as just writing horror too

i write diverse characters and do the best research i can; if someone notices i’ve made a mistake or have accidentally written something insensitive, please let me know! i am always learning!

if i could draw i would make all of my works graphic novels as my choice of media, but alas, i am incapable of doing much more than staring at my tablet and getting angry when the picture doesn’t draw itself

a woman spends her entire life recruiting people known as Guardians to help protect the world from danger, but the biggest threat she’s ever faced is about to upend it all. not to mention the evil little shadow demon that lives in her head is constantly trying to overtake her and go on a murderous rampage. she’s a bit busy.

a disease has wiped out nearly the entire human population. if things weren’t already bad, this disease made it so that babies just. couldn’t be born. until one is. with the human population dwindling, and groups trying to speed up that process, our main character has to travel across the country with the first baby that’s been born in two decades so that scientists may be able to find a way to fix this entire thing. no problem.

Conlangs are objectively cool as fuck but a lot of sci-fi/fantasy misuses them.

Like yeah this culture would probably have a word that means "specific badass kind of magic sword" but how does language affect this story? how has it shaped the setting and what are the immediate effects on the characters?

Obviously the OG is Tolkien. The conlangs give an incredible amount of depth to the story, making the world feel more alive while at the same time mirroring the experience of travelling to a foreign country where not everyone speaks your language.

Watership down also makes extremely effective use of it's conlang, slowly teaching the reader over the course of the text to the point where a character can speak a full sentence in the conlang and the reader can fully comprehend it. I don't want to spoil it, but it leads to a moment of powerful empathy during a climactic sequence.

For a specific example:

In Tolkien’s legendarium, the world was completely dark until the gods grew two powerful magic bioluminescent trees. These were so huge, brilliant, and holy that they were able to project brightness across the entire planet, and after their destruction, the last remnants of their light were stuffed into small lamps that became the sun and moon, which are said to be pale echoes of the Trees’ glory.

In the language of the Elves who went and lived under those trees, galad means both “tree” and “light.” Because when they made their language, the two were inextricably linked.

Alternately, if you want a real-world example, consider the common English figure of speech: “good luck.” If you were to break that sentiment down, what it essentially summarizes is “You’re about to do something which has multiple possible outcomes, some of which are preferable to you over others. I validate and share your preference on your behalf, and am prepared to mourn or celebrate with you, depending.” (You can see why we shorten it.)

But in Japanese, if you wanted to express that exact same sentiment to someone, the phrase you would use translates literally to “do your best”. In English, the future is out of your hands, and you can only hope for random chance to favor you. In Japanese, your success requires your full participation. In this minor difference, you can see reflected some of the major differences in values and perspectives between the two cultures.

My two best examples of conlangs employed well are Chaos Language and the Old Speech from Nier and Earthsea respectively.

Chaos Language is only used occasionally as an officially construction language, with Song of the Ancients being the main example of a song entirely in Chaos Language. It was developed almost entirely by the lead singer of the Nier franchise, Emi Evans, who speaks frankly an impressive number of languages - there's a little bit of English, Scots Gaelic, Welsh, German, Hungarian, French, Latin and Japanese in Chaos Language, the entire purpose of which is to make the language familiar enough that you can identify it as a language but different enough that you can recognise that it's not like any language spoken on Earth, which fits perfectly into a world like Nier, where things are familiar enough that you can tell this is Earth, but different enough that you can realise its not the Earth you know anymore.

The Old Speech, meanwhile, only has a few words introduced in it per book, but it's entirely vital to the themes of Earthsea. It's the language of magic, and the way to cast spells with it is to know a things name in the Old Speech. Names are vital to the plot of Earthsea - every book in the series has a search for names and therefore identity at the heart of it, especially the first two, and this focus on the value of identity is literally baked into the world and the magic system itself with the Old Speech.

Also, y'know, the Old Speech word for 'rock/stone' is tolk, and the word for 'sea/ocean' is inien, thereby making Earthsea literally Tolkinien, and I can appreciate a pun like that.

I think Katherine Addison's Ethuveraz books do a good job with language. Although the Ethuverazhin words we actually get on the page are mostly honorifics and name constructions, those alone teach us a lot about Elven and Goblin cultures and values. Also we know that their language not only retains the tu/vos distinction, but also has a parallel informal/formal distinction in the first person pronoun, conveyed in English as thou/you and I/We, respectively. It's very deft and says a lot about the culture, and a lot about the individual characters we meet through how they choose to traverse the conversational landscape with these options for (in)formality available to them.

Hi! You can call me Zoey. I’m creating a writeblr (again) and I’m very please to be introducing myself! I’m an aspiring author and college student. I’m gray ace/bisexual, non-binary (she/they), and I live in the midwest of the usa. I have adhd and am possibly autistic, and I deal with chronic pain and anxiety. I’m also something of a gamer, and I dabble in fanfiction from time to time.

I have two main WIPs right now, summarized below — though they are still in the plotting stages, and the summaries might change in future. please, feel free to ask to be on the taglist for either.

WORKS IN PROGRESS

THE BEYOND DUOLOGY — BOOK ONE (working title)

The year is 2284. Humanity has long ago risen to the stars, joining a galactic community of ascended species. No longer alone in the universe, the Helios Accord brought the countries of Earth together into one united government, The Sol Federation.

Emelyn Kane is a washed up soldier, a mercenary working solo. Born far from Earth, she spends most of her time on her ship, going from job to job and trying not to think about how she ended up disgraced and discharged from the human military.

When her ship crash lands on an uncharted planet, Emelyn believes her life, such as it is, has ended. But the planet is life bearing, inhabited by a sentient species. And the indigenous people, the Vescai, have strange abilities — abilities that have kept their massive empire hidden from the rest of the universe.

Even when she gets used to life on the beautiful planet she is now stranded on, Emelyn knows that she is the last person who should be seen as a vanguard of humanity, let alone an ambassador for the entire ascended galaxy.

As the Vescai debate her very appearance on one of their planets, Emelyn must decide if she wished to remain with them, or allow them to wipe her memory or send her home. But her choice might be taken out of her hands, as she soon begins to develop the very abilities the Vescai treasure.

THE KRAKEN (working title)

Fifteen years ago, the love of Marisolle’s young life was discovered and brutally executed by her father, the Prince-Regent, for crimes against the Crown. Hardening her heart, the princess swore never to love again.

Now queen in her own right, married, and with children of her own, Marisolle is content, if not happy. She rules well and is beloved by her people, and her country is more prosperous than ever. But there are enemies on the horizon, and Marisolle soon must seek desperate help if her rule is to survive.

Theovold left his home almost ten years ago to join the queen of Mavacia in an arranged marriage. He loves his children, and adores his wife, even as he feels the deep chasm between them, the pain of a love lost. But his attempts at wooing her may come to a stop when Mavacia is attacked, and a new man comes into her life.

Vincenze is a pirate, nothing more and nothing less. When the Queen of Mavacia offers him a Letter of Marque, permission to sail under her name and banner, in return for his aid in the coming war, he knows that he cannot run from his past any longer.

And as Marisolle, Theovold, and Vincenze come together to face their enemies, the Sea Witch watches, pieces falling into place.
