The most obvious reference is first to Ramil and Paytai, as we get an immediate flash back of them in bed together intercut into the scene.

But then, 15 minutes later we also get an allusion to Khannin as the forbidden fruit, and that's when I think the idea of greed comes in more.

Because clearly both of these relationships are forbidden. However, Paytai specifically says that it's greed that's keeping the beautiful work of art from being finished, and it strikes me as being something Charan would worry about a lot, in regards to his duty to Khannin as the heir.

I suspect that he views any sort of infatuation he feels towards Khannin as an obstacle in Khannin's rise to power.

No wait, random worldbuilding idea:

A people who have an age-old tradition, that when warriors left home to go to war, their family that remains home prepare funeral goods for them while they wait, sewing them the clothes and preparing the tools and all that they will be buried with - to emotionally prepare them to the hard possibility that the one who left will not return home alive. If the warrior returns, their burial goods are all burned in a bonfire that is lit for the celebration of their return.

And to this modern day, mothers of the culture will tell their children "fine, but let me take your measures for burial clothes before you go" as a way of telling them that something they're about to do is lethally stupid. Sharing stories about just how dramatic their mothers are, someone tells their group of friends that his mother once actually took out a measuring tape to start taking his measures when he said he's leaving home for a work trip.

And another one goes "pfft, yeah. This one time I went to a rock concert and came back home to mom sitting on her sewing machine, fucking making me a funeral coat."

Apparently I can’t shut up about them so here’s my headcannon about Ramil and Paytai: I think these two started being intimate when they were in their teens, at first just fooling around because they were around each other all the time but then it became more and more until they were fully having sex and had, at the same time, developed very strong feelings for each other.

While this thing was happening between them, I think Ramil’s father became more and more abusive as Ramil got older, and Ramil started feeling more and more trapped and powerless. I also think that Paytai started being exposed to more people, just by virtue of being older and being out in the world more. I think that made Ramil feel painfully insecure, because he’s never sure whether Paytai is with him because he loves him or because he sees it as part of his role in the royal court. Paytai saw all of this, saw how deeply distressed Ramil was becoming, and he introduced the idea of the dom/sub dynamic and the bdsm play into their relationship to reassure Ramil and give him some sense of control over his life - and then it gave Paytai power too, for the first time in his life.

I think one day Ramil’s father humiliated him particularly brutally, maybe barking something like “The only friend you have is the one I bought for you and he would leave you without looking back if he could!” That night, Ramil walked into his bedroom and found Paytai on his bed holding a silk scarf. Paytai handed it to him and said “Tie me to your bed.” Ramil didn’t understand what was going on. “What?” Paytai said it again. “Tie me to your bed. I don’t want to go anywhere. I belong to you.” Ramil hesitated for a while, but eventually he tied up Paytai, then looked him in the eyes and asked “You belong to me?” Paytai nodded. “I belong to you.” And that’s how it started.
