nitewishes:
Where a cub once stood, a proud beast now stands. The tiger glances over toward Kanata briefly, a look of respect written in his eyes. It’s been quite a while since they’ve seen each other, but Maharaja does not forget. He will never forget the respect that Kanata has earned in the household of the witch.
Jaejoong agrees though, with a nod, as he hears Kanata speak. Letting Maharaja loose on the traveling coven of intrusive witches is a good idea. If the beast happens to bite an ankle or a butt, well, that can’t be helped, right? The witch looks over toward his oldest friend, not missing the half hidden smile the other wears behind his scarf. For some reason, it makes him feel a fleeting sense of calm.
Well, as calm as anyone can be standing here in the middle of the eerie woods with the fire crackling in the distance. Somewhere off to the right a wolf howls, but the witches bounding around the fire seem to pay it no mind. A loud, abrasive laughter suddenly erupts, followed by an unnerving chant.
“Well, fuck. Guess that’s our cue. It’s going to get really ugly if we let them finish this chant.”
This is all Maharaja needs to hear. He leaps into the woods and takes off running toward the fire at full speed. Massive paws slam against the ground with his running, powerful legs snapping twigs and rustling bushes as he streaks past. A loud growl erupts from his jaws, echoing off the dead branches of the trees.
Only one witch spots him first. It’s already too late.
Kanata would probably pay to know exactly what’s going on inside Maharaja’s head. On the other hand, he gave up on knowing what Jaejoong thinks long before that night. Sometimes he feels like he could almost guess it, but he always allows himself to doubt.
He leans against one of the trees, as his gaze follows Maharaja’s movements through the forest. The air is chilly, but it’s probably something more than cold that makes Kanata’s hairs stand up on his arms, and a shiver tingle uncomfortably at the back of his neck. He almost doesn’t need the Witch’s words to be sure that whatever is going on around that fire can’t be good. Or even just slightly bad. It has to be terrible, something Kanata doesn’t want to witness. And he is genuinely scared, even if he tries his best not to show it.
All of a sudden he would like for Maharaja to hurry, to scare (or, yes, even kill) those people fast, because whatever horror they are trying to bring back, or create from nothing, is going to cause much more destruction and pain than Kanata can probably imagine. And he knows that.
“They are going to run away...” Kanata says, in a soft breath, and he really, really hopes that, as he hears Maharaja’s growl, and he knows that sound should be scary too, but right now it almost makes him sigh in relief.
The tiger is huge, and the light of the fire makes the shadow he is casting even bigger. Kanata notices that first witch, the one who spotted Maharaja before everyone else could react, or move, and for a moment he pities him. But it’s a feeling that doesn’t linger. This isn’t the moment for the boy to feel sorrow for someone else’s misfortunes.
“They are going to run away”, he says, again, and his voice shakes slightly.

Of course Kanata doesn’t answer his question. Jaejoong didn’t expect him to, in all truthfulness. It’s not as if he’d of listened either way. When he sets his mind to doing something, he usually does it. Very rarely is he able to be stopped, and only by a very small amount of people–most of which are gone now.
“They’re summoning.” He says coldly, looking as though he is not at all bothered by the snap of the twig caused by Kanata’s feet. If someone happens to see them, it definitely won’t be pleasant to do with but the witch has faith in his own ability to handle the situation, especially with Maharaja looking like he’s about ready to rip a head off at any moment.
Does he want to know what they’re summoning? Probably not. Whatever it is, it’s probably not any good. Killing them would be the most sure fire way to make sure that no harm befalls upon him or anyone he cares about. However, he knows that Kanata would disapprove, and whether the younger wants to admit it to himself or not, he does have some kind of sway over the witch.
“Maybe I should just have Maharaja scare them off. Nobody expects to see a tiger in these woods.” If they could run off screaming like chickens with their heads cut off, naked with flaccid genitals hiding in fear, Jaejoong would find some sick amusement in this. The small snort that Maharaja gives off suggests the tiger would also.
And it wouldn’t kill anyone. Kanata would be happy, correct?
They are summoning.
The Witch is right. Kanata doesn’t want to know what. His imagination is already running wild with images of beats, demons, and Satan himself, and he knows that - when it comes to this kind of stuff - he could probably be underestimating the situation. He can count of one of his hands the times he didn’t end up being surprised by something when he hanged out with the Witch.
At Jae’s words, Kanata glances over Maharaja as if he was expecting to see the young cub he met so many years before, with his majestic paws that couldn’t bring him downstairs without making him stumble. The tiger appears to be very different now, as it grew to become an even fiercer creature than Kanata remembered from the last time he happened to meet him.
“It sounds like a good idea”, he admits, with a smile, half hidden by the rim of his scarf. He can’t imagine the picture displayed inside the Witch and Maharaja’s mind, but he likes the way the tiger snorts as if he’d be laughing, and the sound itself is enough to almost make him chuckle and relax.
“Silly me”, he admits, then. “For a moment I thought I was in danger...” He doesn’t like to be protected, but he knows there are things out there that are more potent that Kanata will ever be. “But I have to say, this is not what I was expecting to happen when we decided to go for a little walk in the woods.”
But again, being with the Witch always keeps him in a constant state of awe, and he deeply enjoys it, so he can’t complain.
Why does it always have to be about killing?
Well, that’s not fair. It’s not actually always about that, but when it comes to the Witch, Kanata feels like there is always some kind of punishment or pain involved, be it physical or not.
Kanata doesn’t care about those people, he doesn’t know them and they are probably - to put it simply - bad guys. They surely aren’t normal, dancing like that, naked, in the middle of the forest, in a night like that. But to be honest, Kanata isn’t normal either, and the past few years really had him struggle with what normal could actually mean.
“What are they doing?”, Kanata asks, instead of replying to the Witch question. He knows that if Jae would set his mind on killing those people he would do it anyway, and Kanata’s opinion on the matter is not particularly relevant. He tries to keep his voice down, but he is startled by his own clumsiness. The sharp sound of the twig snapping under his step makes him freeze on his spot.
All of a sudden, the thought of being noticed, seen, or heard by does people sounds scary, even with the Witch and Maharaja right next ti him.
He looks just like a guy, after all. An unimpressive guy. Kind of short, with black eyes, and black hair, pale skin, and regular clothes. His hands are stuck in his pockets, a black scarf wrapped around his neck.
Are they dangerous? Would they flee if they saw Jae and the tiger? Would they attack him if they noticed him? Kanata is not sure.
You like to please others too much. It makes you try too hard. Though I think I might have actually told you this in person at some point.
I’m trying to please myself more than others lately. But yeah, I have to admit that this is mainly because I don’t meet many people nowadays. And the ones I meet, they are customers, so I kind of have to please them, or they won’t come back. And I’d feel terrible. So in the end, you are right. I like to please others, probably way too much, and it does make me try too hard.
I’m probably trying too hard just right now.
