You don't look so good

My whump blog! Queer, 30s, chronically ill/disabled. They/them. A lot of hospital/medical stuff, folks passing out, occasional sickfics, emotional whump/angst. Not super into torturer/whumper content. Warning: contains descriptions and images of violence, sickness, blood, injury

Something I never see in whump is Whumpee having to spend over night in the ER, specially when they don’t get a room, just a bed in a hallway

• I doubt this is hallway exclusive, but the constant noise, silent conversations, people moving around, machines beeping, alarms going off, ice machines

• they don’t turn off all the lights, if you want Whumpee to suffer a little extra put their bed right under a light that doesn’t turn off!

• ^ Whumpee could get a face washcloth to cover their eyes, if you wanna be nice

•People walking past whumpee’s bed

• if Whumpee has a caretaker to sit with them, they will have to get up and move their chair out of the way for other gurneys

• every few hours a nurse will come and take your vitals. Not hallway exclusive

• the medicine you were getting through your iv finished, there’s an alarm going off now

• ((( warm blankets )))

• time doesn’t really exist when you’re in the hospital

• Whumpee crying during all the needles

• is Whumpee is having surgery, they won’t be allowed to eat or drink anything, even water

• not a hallway thing, but have the nurses miss when putting an iv in, have them miss 10 times! Whumpee’s inner elbow dotted with red marks later from all the failed attempts

• maybe another patient is being disruptive

• Whumpee got out of bed without assistance, an alarm is going off now

•Whumpee feeling caged in by the protective bars on the side of the bed

•^ or maybe they’re comforted by them

• Whumpee in too much pain too reach the call button

• a nurse or paramedic in between calls teaching Whumpee and caretaker a game, or giving music suggestions

• not being able to get comfortable lying down

•^ specifically because of the iv

• being afraid to fall asleep

• Whumpee decided in the early hours of morning that they won’t be getting more sleep, after only sleeping for 2-3 hours at time during the night

caretaker finally finds missing whumpee after a long time (days? months? years?) searching. whumpee is bound, scrawny, dirty, weak. (maybe as soon as they see caretaker, they start struggling against their ropes, trying in vain to reach out.)

caretaker rushes to whumpee’s side and touches them. “oh god, whumpee?! oh thank GOD!”

whumpee smiles weakly. tears glisten in their eyes. “you found me,” they breathe.

caretaker unties them, and—after checking for injuries—takes whumpee into their arms. whumpee melts into the embrace.

“it’s okay,” caretaker murmurs. “you’re safe now.”

Freezing Whump

after going missing, whumpee is found halfway buried in snow

can’t move fingers or any limb properly

curling in to try and preserve some body heat

entering warmth again and the entire body burning from the cold skin being warmed up

forced to work in the cold

forcing self to keep walking and moving to prevent falling and fully freezing

getting freezing water tossed on them OR whumper tossing warm water on them, offering temporary relief until the water cools and makes the cold so much worse

huddling for warmth

leaving a trail of bloody footsteps in the snow

seeing their breath fogging before their face

stuck without heat when the power goes out

trying to keep warm with a fire on a place without proper ventilation, leaving them coughing and getting lightheaded as smoke slowly fills the room

unable to stop trembling even after leaving the cold

please make sure you have your character lie down and stare at the wall for hours at a time. maybe they're physically or emotionally exhausted but can't sleep. maybe they're dissociating from overwhelming trauma. maybe they're trapped waiting for the inevitable to happen. but in any case they must also be dead behind the eyes

I want more chronic pain whump. Give me a cocky, independent character who suddenly can’t walk because a sudden rain storm aggravated their old leg wounds and now they have to lean on a friend to get home. Give me a usually stoic character shaking with pain during a flare up. Give me a character who’s finally healed having their first bad pain day and abruptly feeling like they’re back at square one.

You know what I love? When characters are almost unconscious, but not quite.

Slumped over, a complete ragdoll in the others’ hands, but alert enough to groan softly at different sensations, eyes hooded and glazed, just wide enough to gather a blurry image of their surroundings. Though they’re dizzy and their limbs feel like lead, they gain comfort in the others’ touch, unconsciously leaning into them, eyelids fluttering in hazy relief at the soothing, concerned gestures.

the thing about tumblr is that I'm so entrenched here that they can make stupid ugly updates to the site all they want. I'll just sign in and go "ugh fine, I'll work around it" and then continue to post things I wouldn't even tell a therapist.

Former Whumpee who saved themselves.

Who had no one. Who had never had anyone because they were born in this fucked-up place that just kept getting worse and worse, and even when they left, they always found themselves in over their head.

They met people who claimed to want to help them, only to find those people had ulterior motives. Maybe Whumpee was abused further, or nearly died because of these people. The ability to trust, already so, so miniscule, has been all but obliterated.

They had to learn how to survive. They had to learn how to fight. They had to learn how to save themselves. They clawed their way bare-knuckled out of their own personal hell because no one was ever there to save them, so they never expected that to change now, because why the hell would it?

And then they meet Caretaker, and Caretaker's Team.

It's a bit like finding a feral cat that's been abused in a back alley somewhere. The cat hisses, spits, scratches, growls. But you know it's because they're afraid. And you know that they've probably, until now, never been shown reason not to be.

So Caretaker gives Former Whumpee time. Doesn't crowd them. Doesn't push them to open up more than they're comfortable with. Caretaker is just there, and lets Whumpee know they're there. Whenever Former Whumpee is ready.

Former Whumpee eventually joins the Team, helps on missions. They're good at what they do, after having to learn it the hard way. They are an asset. But they keep themselves distant. Professional. Never getting personal. Never opening up. They are closed off like a steel trap, and even Caretaker, who has grown to love Former Whumpee, hasn't been able to get fully past those defenses.

(Though secretly, quietly, Former Whumpee cares. So much. More than they can ever, ever say. More than Caretaker and Team will ever know. They hate themselves for it. It's exploitable weakness.)

And Former Whumpee is angry. They hold so, so much rage, rage that they take out on the enemy, sometimes in ways that truly worry Caretaker and their team.

Former Whumpee sees this. They see their own darkness threatening to take over. They see their own terrible potential, what they might become.

A part of them is horrified at it.

Another part of them? That part of them wants it. Because that monster would be strong. That monster would not be a victim. That monster would never be in a position like the one they were in before.
