Excuse her hair - I’m debating whether to cut this wig or declare it a bad job and get her a new one. But I’m pleased with the neckwarmer - it’s based on a human one I made for a friend, which was based on one her gran had made 30 years ago.
Getting there for Winter
I figured knitting a “bulky” weight hat in light DK would give me something MSD or SD sized. Unfortunately I always underestimate just how tight I knit, so this hat can stand up on its own. Next time I’ll use 3.5mm needles instead of 3mm.

Naturally Perfect Dolls
They’re back up for sale - briefly, at $49. My flatmate got Kennedy last time and she’s adorable. They’re American Girl Doll style 18 inch dolls, but all with different kinds of natural hair. (That’s not an affiliate link or anything, it’s just direct from the newsletter.)
There is a wait time on them, but given I’m now used to BJDs that isn’t a big deal!

When you’re carding, spinning and weaving everything from scratch, using the big squares exactly as they come off the loom must seem like a fucking brilliant idea. 90% (or more) of pre-14th century clothing is made purely on squares (and sometimes triangles cut from squares).
How did they get the fabric so fine it draped like that? Was that something medieval europe forgot? Or do I just have a completely misguided image of historical clothing?
Medieval Europe also had incredibly fine weaves, though the ancient world tended to have them beat. Linen was found in Egypt woven with a fineness that we’re still trying to replicate, and there was a kind of cotton woven in India called ‘woven wind’ that was supposedly still translucent at eight layers, and wool shawls so fine that the entire thing could be drawn through a wedding ring.
The way they could get away with pinking and slashing doublets in the 16th century was partially because the fabrics were so tightly woven that you could simply cut a line on the bias and nothing would fray.
Modern fabric machining sucks ass in terms of giving us any kind of quality like the kind human beings produced prior to the Industrial Revolution.

The Celts made very fine clothing as well. They invented plaid after all, and the same weaves that have been found at the La Tene/Halstatt salt mines in Austria were also found as far away as western China in the tombs of the Tarim mummies.
Can we talk about 18th century and regency era muslin as well because that shit is gorgeous. It’s so fine it’s more transparent than silk chiffon and oh the tiny hems you can make with it!! I have an 18th century neckerchief and the hem is about 2mm wide. Not kidding, 2mm!!! Because it didn’t fray like our stuff does now. All we can produce nowadays is a rough, scratchy, bullshit excuse for muslin and it’s horrid.
I love this because we’ve gotten so blind to what makes ‘good’ fabric now - machine lace? horrible scratchy shit mostly made from poly. Actual lace is handmade, lasts for fucking EVER and looks stunning.
Regency gowns fucking rocked in terms of fabric quality - we use muslin as a ‘throw away’ before sewing the real fabric, back then it WAS a real fabric and it was so finely made you wouldn’t even think it was the same stuff.
Hand hemming is still the best way to finish off anything, but harder than hell because of the shitty weave of modern fabrics.
Satin? Silks?!
Pah. Yes, fabric is cheaper, more affordable and varied than before, but it is an area where QUALITY was sacrificed for QUANTITY.
(I don’t want to seem like I’m shitting on how great we have it now for clothes and martials or anything, because YAY!! but also, I’d love to get my mits on a bolt of real Muslin)
archaeologists recently found some Bronze Age fabric woven on site and preserved in marsh in England. it’s fine to die for. they were exporting it and trading into Asia.
I’m not into fashion, but I love reading about the history and evolution of it.
My favorite textile history fact is that the ancient Romans loved really sheer, floaty silks, but at the time the fashion in China, where the silk was produced, was for heavy, intricate brocades. So the Romans would import the heavier fabrics, painstakingly unravel them, and use the silk thread to weave the fabric they liked.
Saving this because every time it comes around I think I should try make one for one of my dolls, then I forget to save the post.

Sitrep: Gripenhem moved. Got it into the living room, so now I can proceed with making and planting lots of little trees. It’s a slow process, mostly because I don’t seem to have too much free time lately. Also, off white walls and incandescent light bulbs make for yellowish pictures.
My god, that is *amazing*.

His attention to detail, when recreating a train car or a luxury apartment, might fool you into thinking you are waiting for a TV show to start, but in reality you are looking at his intricate set designs that aim to capture reality inside a TV.

Stuart Semple is so full of gentle but pointed snark and a burning desire for accessible art, I love him. I love that no matter what Anish Kapoor does, Stuart Semple will be there, making fun of him and selling affordable art supplies to anyone who wants them.

Is that the same guy that gave him a middle finger by making the wordest brightest pink and putting in the terms of use that the Vantablack asshole is the only man not allowed to use it?
I love this because it’s like watching a comic book fight between an art themed hero and his super villain nemesis that wants to keep all the art things to himself.
Yes, and that same jerk broke said terms of use by having someone get him the pink pigment and he then literally gave Semple and the world the middle finger, after dipping it in the pink pigment. No class whatsoever.
Semple responded by somehow getting Vanta Black (or his own newly made pigment, can’t remember which) and giving the peace sign to everyone with two voided out fingers. Seriously, they looked like a bad video edit.
Sounds like he’s attempting to flush his reputation down the crapper with keeping such a huge advance in art technology to himself AND throwing a tempter tantrum over the backlash.
I’m glad this Semple dude is standing up his bullshit.
Ya’ll are missing one very important point: Vantablack is caustic. Direct skin contact can cause really gnarly chemical burns. Despite that, the “void is staring back at you” black is something just about any artist would want to experiment with, even if you need to handle it as a hazmat chemical.
So, Semper’s peace sign in his own “deep space between stars” black is downright incredible as it’s SAFE. Anyone can use it, it even smells good without the scent affecting the color or consistency.
An artist in his studio whipped up a safe alternative to a pigment that chemical engineers have to make in a controlled lab.
Semper’s vengence led to a breakthrough that benefits artists of all levels the world over, and that’s just lovely.
It’s like he used the power of righteous hatred the same way some people use the power of love.
His intense need to spite the VB asshole let to him making a scientific breakthrough that shits all over his product.
Spite is humanity’s greatest power. I love it.
I don’t even paint, but one day I want a heap of this just to screw with Anish Kapoor.
