Oh hey another rant oh gee.

Pretty short one this time but holy shit does RWBY not have a lot of people of color. And when there are they tend to be the villains.

Like okay top of my head non villain poc’s are Flint and….oh wow there it is.

I know emerald and Ilia are there too, but the fact that the two poc’s we accept as good guys had to go through redemption arcs kinda says it all.

Oh yeah and Fox for the two seconds he’s in this show with the rest of CFVY.

And it’s made all the worse with how they handled the white fang, and their idea for volume 10 in Vacuo.

I just remembered the grandma exists. Oh and Penny’s dad I guess.

Still crazy the main team, plus the other main team, plus the main cast of adults, plus the main villain, plus their professors, plus a majority of the side characters are all white though.

Ughhhh, why do all the shows I like suck at basic representation.

For god’s sake you made Blake be from Indonesia, darken that skin up!

happy pride! remember that being a transgender is everything but fiction. there are so many real historical figures from every century about whose transgender identities we aren't even aware of

on this picture i drew Alexandr Andreevich Alexandrov - cavalry officer of the russian imperial army that participated in napoleonic wars. people persistently keep on misgendering mispronounsing deadnaming and calling him a crossdresser although alexandrov clearly stated that he didn't want to be called by his deadname and being treated like anything but a man. that's an interesting historical figure and i wanted to draw attention to his person. i can't tell everything about him in only one post so i recomend you to read about alexandrov by yourself

also be proud of yourself and remember that you're valid! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Ya know now that I’m actively participating in RWBY fandom I just wanna complain about something.

This might be a pretty popular opinion already but why the hell did they choose Jaune to be the one who kills Penny?

I mean I think it was pretty cheap to kill her off again in the first place, but if you’re going to do it again why pick Jaune? Ruby is right there!

I’m not even saying this because I identify as Mr Nuts n Dolts’ I just think that’s the only narratively satisfying option they could’ve gone with. Like dude the only person who Penny talks to meaningfully before she dies the first time was Ruby. The only person Penny actually knew well from RWBY and JNPR was Ruby.

The only meaningful relationship she had in the entire show was with Ruby and kinda her dad. Why wasn’t Ruby the one to do it, why Jaune?

This ties into other issues I have with the show, don’t get me wrong I love this thing but it does have some issues, but I’ll get into that when I feel like complaining again lol.

It's unlikely Ruby would have done it. It also plays into Jaune's character arc. He's found his confidence in being a healer/support character and this challenges that. There's also the potential parallel of Ruby being unable to save Pyrrha and Jaune being unable to save Penny.

Jaune is one of Ruby's major foils. Think Ruby reiterating her desire to be a Hero™️ like in a fairy tale (and having a shit time of it) in the same volume Jaune literally becomes a fairy tale hero (and has a shit time of it). Both Ruby and Jaune needed to face a major failure in order to push their respective character arcs forward. Ruby already blames herself for the fall of Atlas. She didn't need Penny's death, too (not that she doesn't still feel some guilt at that). It wouldn't have really added anything to her arc for Ruby to be the one to do it.

But I like Penny's character arc, including her death, so I thought it was all great.

Like the idea of Jaune being a healer and having to kill one of his own is cool, don’t get me wrong. At the end of the day though it just doesn’t hit as hard because they barely know each other.

If you’re going to bring penny back just to kill her again (which I am still not a huge fan of) the least you can do is give it some emotional resonance to make me care again.

That’s why Ruby feels like the obvious choice, and in my mind it isn’t too hard to get her to do it. Or at the very least have some kinda moment tied around it. Like maybe Ruby hesitates after Penny asks her to do it and that leads to some other big moment in the plot, idk that just feels better than what we got honestly.

To each their own. It's not really important that they don't really know each other. Jaune's part was focused on his desire to be a hero and Penny's on her relationship with Winter. I care about Penny so I cared that she died. I find it really dismissive of her character and all she accomplished in volumes 7 and 8 to say was revived just to die again. I'm not really trying to convince you of anything. As personal preference you're entitled to your opinion. As a critique of the writing, I don't think what you have to say holds water is all.

I think it is a pretty valid critique of the writing to criticize Penny’s involvement in Volume 7 and 8.

It really does spoil the impact of her first death to bring her back, and killing her again just felt like their attempt to get a cheap reaction out of the fans who cared about her when she died the first time.

I also think it’s a valid criticism of the writing to say that a main character being killed by another could have been done in a much more impactful way.

Also holy crap I did not like them turning her human but to each their own on that I guess.

It's absolutely valid to criticize Penny's role in volumes 7 and 8 (or any other part of the writing!). You just haven't done that in the context of this post? Are you trying to imply that “bring[ing] penny back just to kill her again” is a valid critique? Because it decidedly is not. That's a refusal to engage with two volumes of the show (her relationship with Winter, her foiling Ironwood, the exploration of agency and risk-you're ignoring all those things). She did a lot outside of her death that pushed the plot forward and developed the themes of the show (her death, in my opinion, does those things too). Penny's death doesn't delete her role in the show. I described that as dismissive because it is dismissive.

To clarify my point from the previous post, I don't think your points hold water as a critique of teh writing because they are based on an emotional reaction that I didn't have. Penny's death doesn't feel cheap to me, it doesn't ruin any previous plot points to me (she didn't actually die in volume 3/I knew she was gonna come back because she was a robot), I found her death very impactful. And you've mostly focused on the impact of Penny's death (or lack thereof) and not character arcs or themes. From my perspective, you're saying you don't like, but are not actually critiquing.

And I'm not trying to sound rude, but your what-if scenario of Ruby killing Penny instead that would somehow lead “to some other big moment in the plot” and then that would be better: that's nothing. That's a vibe in your head. I kind of ignored it before, but it does contribute to why I find your posts as a critique so insubstantial. It's super vague. There's nothing about how that would affect the surrounding plot, the character arcs, or themes of the show. I hope you don't consider this part of a critique either.

I think we'll just have to agree to disagree since we had such different experiences of Penny's death. We'd have to spend a lot more time getting into the weeds than I think either of us want to in order to come to any better understanding. Thank you for replying, though.

Final reblog on my end here, your entire tone is pretty elitist on this stuff.

Like yeah I didn’t go super into the weeds on this, it’s a tumblr post.

I understand stuff like this is common in fandom, but trying to say that i’m not providing valid criticism of the show just because I didn’t list everything in a well structured essay is insane!

Dude I like RWBY, but I think it’s valid to acknowledge when some stuff doesn’t have the weight the writers intended it too.

Like okay, if you really want to talk about character arcs why the hell was Penny turned into a human? The entire nuts and bolts speech was about how she’s just as much of a person as anybody, even if she’s a robot. That served as an awesome allegory for anyone who has ever felt ostracized and made me like Penny a lot more as a character.

They threw that all away when they made her human. Took apart a key piece of her character. All so we could just kill her again and not be able to bring her back. Yes she progressed the plot, but it rings hollow when she’s killed again just to get a reaction out of the fanbase. I know you’re arguing for the Jaune healer thing but I’m going to be so honest we do not need more stuff for Jaune to do at all. His inclusion feels like a tacked on ending to a crumbling character arc for Penny that got ripped away because a pinnochio parallel that no one wanted.

I believe all of that could’ve been at least somewhat forgiven, though not entirely, if the writing did something challenging and forced Ruby to be the one to have to kill her. Do something, anything, with this beloved character’s death and her only established relationship in the show. Instead they just let the mfer who just keeps getting more character arcs do it instead.
