ANISE SILVERSONG’S FATHER must be quite cross with her. The youngest of a large school of heirs to the Sunken Throne, she’d thought that fleeing the Drowned Kingdom on her sister’s wedding night would go unnoticed. But King Silversong keeps a watchful eye on his bloodline, and despite her position in the line of succession, clever and obedient Anise was always his favorite. She knows that now - and feels guilty for leaving him - because, after what she traded to join the world above, she’s not sure she’ll ever see him again.
PRINCE ALONCEI GREYWADER sleeps with a head by his bedside. He keeps it in a jar of seawater, where it sings to him, its sharp teeth brighter than any moon. With his ailing mother’s time running out, those teeth are a constant reminder of the shiny crown that awaits him once he succeeds her - and he intends to make his reign over the Sazahrian empire just as bright. He only needs a way in: a way to cement his place in his people’s hearts so that no one will ever question him. Forming a relationship with a supposedly long-lost kingdom can do that, and his pretty little companion will show him the way.
CAPTAIN LORGAN ARNIDGE is a kind man. Too kind for his own good, maybe, but it earned him his crew, and now, sharing a bond stronger than iron, the men of the Deep Star make up the most formidable band of pirates on Sazarh’s seas. Equal parts soldier and seaman, Arnidge is just the kind of man Prince Aloncei wants in his corner - and if it pays well, Arnidge supposes he can oblige. But the Deep Star has a secret. A secret, and a pretty voice. If Arnidge and Aloncei plan to make their trip safely, the prince better sleep with one eye open - and Arnidge should learn to close his heart.
