- Paris Hilton
...WOW.
Why are people surprised that a 43 year old survivor of abuse and public humiliations might have learned some stuff along the way about how to be less shit as a person?
Oh right. It's the misogyny.
I realise that maybe a lot of people either don't know that much about Paris Hilton because she's not as popular as she was in the 2000s and also some people might genuinely be too young to know much.
So like as a brief recap, in the 2000s, Paris Hilton was a popular celebrity, though I mean popular in terms of saturation, as she was rarely spoken about positively. The general consensus about her was that she was famous for being famous and that she was just a dumb blonde chick from a rich family.
That's not true. By the time she was catapulted into international fame, she already had a successful modelling career and had appeared in a couple of movies.
What catapulted her was the reality show This Simple Life in which she starred and a sex tape of her and her at-time boyfriend Rick Salomon that was leaked a week before This Simple Life aired.
You may have heard that Paris leaked it herself; she didn't. It was a horrific act done to her. She's spoken about it many times and how it negatively affected her.
Because the reaction was not sympathy for what was done to her or anger at whoever leaked it, but most everyone decided it was really funny. And so we got an SNL skit about it; it was parodied to hell and back in countless shows and movies. As aforementioned, she was accused of leaking it herself for personal gain. She was slutshamed and countless headlines accused her of sleeping around when she wasn't.
Salomon himself went on to distribute his own version of the tape named One Night in Paris that was 38 minutes long in order to make money on it.
Paris didn't make a single cent on it. And the money she received regarding a lawsuit against Salomon (he'd also sued her and her family) she had donated to charity and asked that a portion of whatever profit he makes/made be donated to charity.
You might note that the Huffpost I sourced for that first part is pretty passive aggressive toward her; that's not unique to Huffpost
It also feels prescient to mention that Paris was 19 when the sex tape was made and Rick Salomon was 31/32. She has talked in recent years about feeling coerced to film the tape and that she was "tipsy and tired" during the filming of it.
So what really happened is that when she was 22 years old, a tape of her being taken advantage of by a man more than a decade older was leaked and the world reacted by laughing at her and insulting her.
Despite this genuinely horrific trauma happening to her, she carried on and levied the fame she had to launch her into a very successful career.
Part of that was through reality TV and when she was on camera for that, she created a character to step into and even changed her voice to fit. And everyone ate up that character and never considered that she wasn't like that in real life, and people still believe this. Her on the matter:
“People think because of the character I played — people assume before they meet me that I’m a really ditzy dumb blonde,” she explained. “That’s the one thing that kind of annoys me sometimes. They just think because of the reality show that’s who I really am. But that was just a character that I created. I didn’t realize what a huge success [it would be] — that I would have to continue playing this character for five years. With everything that’s happening, though, with my business, I think people can understand that you couldn’t possibly get this far being a dumb blonde.”
From then on, she was constantly mocked in popular culture, ruthlessly attacked by tabloids and publicly villainised even though her character was just a dumb rich girl. It was just misogyny.
In 2007, a Gallup poll showed that only 10% of USAmericans feel any level of sympathy towards Paris, who had only four years earlier had a sex tape of her leaked, and 63% were very unsympathetic to her.
Paris Hilton has also been stalked several times.
One tried to break into her home in 2010.
Another was arrested for trespassing multiple times and attached her then boyfriend Cy Waits.
There was a guy from Germany who flew to LA to try and see her and was covered in tattoos of her.
And the antisemite who cyber-stalked her and her dad, making death threats against and being antisemitic to her even though the Hiltons are catholic.
Not to forget that the guy who: sent her a wedding dress in the mail asking her to marry him; flew a plane over their Malibu house with signs that read Can't Get Paris Whitney Hilton Out Of My Mind and Mr & Mrs Hilton, May I Court Your Daughter Paris?; and bought her a classic Cadillac and posed as a flower delivery guy so he could get past security and to Paris.
Beyond the sex tape, there's a string of similar incidents.
She was targeted by a hacker who stole over a 100k from her as well as nude photos.
She was in the film National Lampoon's Pledge This! for which she boycotted the premiere because the producers had added extra nude scenes without asking her permission. (She got sued for the boycott btw.)
When her debut album released in the UK, Banksy - yes that Banksy - pulled a stunt where he replaced 500 copies of the album across 48 shops with his own remixed version. The photo on the CD sleeve had been replaced with one of her topless with a dog's head superimposed on it.
Worth mentioning that Banksy's version, which was done in collaboration with Dead Mouse, had titles such as Why Am I Famous?, What Have I Done?, and What Am I For?
Also that a spokesman HMV (one of the shops) was quoted saying:
"It's not the type of behaviour you'd want to see happening very often. I guess you can give an individual such as Banksy a little bit of leeway for his own particular brand of artistic engagement. Often people might have a view on something but feel they can't always express it, but it's down to the likes of Banksy to say often what people think about things. And it might be that there will be some people who agree with his views on the Paris Hilton album."
Something tells me he wouldn't have said that if Bansky had targeted Justin Timberlake or James Blunt.
If you ask me, what Bansky did was lazy and misogynistic. Sure, the stunt itself and all the components involved are impressive. But they are ultimately in service of an unoriginal message about a safe target, and is just another part of misogynistic rhetoric against a woman who had become a public punching bag.
This isn't to say that Paris Hilton is innocent and never fucked up or ever made a mistake. She did, undoubtedly. She's spent time in jail for DUI, and was literally refused entry to Japan due to a drug-possession charge on her record. She's also said plenty of iffy things. There's worthwhile criticism you could make of her and how she acted back then.
But that's not what happened back then and what happened back then was misogynistic.
In recent times, Paris Hilton has turned her attention towards activism. She's specifically done a lot of work regarding the so- called "troubled teen industry".
And that's because she had been sent to several of them as a teenager. She talks about it in a documentary you can watch on YouTube. The worst of them was Provo Canyon School; she had been dragged out of her house in the middle of the night by two men while her parents watched on in order to get there, and while at the school, she underwent physical, psychological, emotional and sexual abuse.
She is doing very important work, and I think what happened to her very much underscores what I've detailed above.
She has also spoken about the abusive relationships she's been in throughout her life.
And considering everything she's been through and everything she's done, it's really not surprising that she's learned some things about what to do when you make a mistake and how to be a better person.
I suggest skimming the reviews of Provo Canyon School on Google Maps. Fair warning, it can get pretty horrific.
So, some good news.
I may need this later, for cosplay reasons...
the slow casual creep of misogyny back into every point of our lives both digital and physical is making me feel fucking insane
The Temple of Poseidon with a captivating Crescent Moon and Venus, Cape Sounion, Greece
I keep thinking about writing a dating sim that's like loosely based on the London social season (a few high stakes month of trying to net a spouse while navigating finicky social rules, etc) where you can change your gender but depending on when in the game you change it you'll get a pop up that's like "are you sure you want to change your gender? doing so this late in the season might make you come across as a bit desperate, and your social standing may be impacted accordingly..." like everyone is treating you as a lady now, no questions asked, but it is a little sus that you're doing it after totally failing to net a respectable spouse as a man 🧐
One time I was leaving a friend's place and an older lady with basically no English came up to me and communicated that she was very cold and needed a ride. She pointed to tell me where to go.
I got there and her daughter or granddaughter came out and was like omg her phone died we were worried
And then the older lady said something and the younger lady translated.
"She knew she could trust you because you have pink hair"
I thought it was funny at the time. But when I think back on it I think she was basically saying "you had a visible sign of not vibing with the system I was afraid of"

do y'all even know how much i hate being an "elder queer" at 40? a whole goddamn generation before me was wiped out by a plague that politicians deemed not their problem bc it was killing the "right" people. like. this was OPENLY STATED. i spent a large chunk of my childhood going to funerals. nevermind the fact that killing queer people for being queer wasn't codified into law as a hate crime until i was a junior in high school.
i should NOT be an elder queer, i should be middle at most. i am a middle aged queer. most of the elder queers died.
when i was growing up i didn't go to pride parades, i went to pride marches. because that's 100% what they were in the 80s and 90s.
from the absolute bottom of my heart, LEARN OUR FUCKING HISTORY. a generation was nearly wiped out so you young queers could be here. don't let that have been in vain, please.
the fact that people have reblogged this and tagged it "q slur" makes me want to eat glass.
We’re not all gone. Some of us survived. Those funerals OP went to as a child? My friends and I were the ones arranging them.
I was always kind of grateful that the marches slowly became parades. That the protests slowly gave way to parties. It was progress, it was healing.
I was grateful for that because I never healed.
I’m still remembering how straight society turned their collective backs on us and let us die. I will never forgive or forget that. Maybe that’s a shortcoming on my part but it’s true. I’ve tried and I can’t. That scar runs too deep.
And now we’re back to the same shit again. Straight society is turning their backs on my trans brothers and sisters. Ignoring their pain. Trying to legislate them out of existence.
Even our so-called allies are saying shit like “well if we want to appeal to a broader base we can’t keep going on about the transgender thing.” Fuck you Gavin Newsom. In particular.
Make no mistake: they want us dead. Not just closeted, not just silent. Gone. Non-existent. And I say us because they’re just starting with the trans people. They’ll come after the rest of us if they succeed.
I am old and so, so tired.
But I’m alive. And I’m not going anywhere.
For anyone who hasn't heard, the OP here, @saint-batrick, passed away about a year and a half ago. So yeah, please... love the queers that are still here, still alive. Love us while we're all still here, and learn why so many aren't.
The holy grail of searching through academic literature is coming across a string of publications that are like:
Here’s An Idea. Smith et al. 2016
Terrible Idea; a comment on Smith et al. 2016. Johnson 2016.
You’re Wrong Too; a response to Johnson 2016. Nelson 2016.
Guys Just Stop Fighting, None Of Us Know What’s Going On; a Review of the Current Literature. McBrien 2017.
Not even an exaggeration.

at the risk of sounding like a raving lunatic, i think one of my favorite trekkie memes/posts is that one where someone comments on a screenshot of tos and asks if sulu is texting, because it PERFECTLY encapsulates star trek's strange little place at the intersection of pop culture and the tech world:
like listen... 55+ years ago a bunch of actors had to use a mix of existing habits and wild imagination to come up with what they felt would be believable movements and muscle-memory for someone using completely unbelievable tech a few hundred years in the future. like tv had less than ten channels and the screen was a foot across, and they had to go "ok how would someone who's used to a tiny wireless gadget with a screen hold it and use it? how would they talk to a computer? how would the computer sound when she talked back?"
and over half a century later our own tech has surpassed the clunky retrofuture gizmos in so many ways, no doubt inspired by it, that now someone two decades into the 21st century sees an actor in the 60s holding some tiny rectangular plastic prop in both hands and immediately recognizes it as "oh, sulu's texting!" now THAT is a called shot. hell, that's putting your money on a roulette wheel in a casino that hasn't been built yet. i LOVE it. it's so star trek. sulu is absolutely texting.

Second part BOOKS, I have collected some books that have helped me and might help others.
📚Here is my list:
The "how to draw manga" series produced by Graphic-sha. These are for manga artist but they give great advice and information.
"Creating characters with personality" by Tom Bancroft. A great book that can help not just people who draw cartoons but also realistic ones. As it helps you with facial ques and how to make a character interesting.
"Albinus on anatomy" by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Great book to help someone learn basic anatomy.
"Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer and Robert Beverly Hale. A good book if you want to go further in-depth with anatomy.
"Directing the story" by Francis Glebas. A good book if you want to Story board or make comics.
"Animal Anatomy for Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger. A good book for if you want to draw animals or creatures.
"Constructive Anatomy: with almost 500 illustrations" by George B. Bridgman. A great book to help you block out shadows in your figures and see them in a more 3 diamantine way.
"Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and expand" by Burne Hogarth. A book that shows how to block out shapes and easily understand what you are looking out. When it comes to human subjects.
"An Atlas of animal anatomy for artist" by W. Ellenberger and H. Dittrich and H. Baum. This is another good one for people who want to draw animals or creatures.
Etherington Brothers, they make books and have a free blog with art tips.
📝As for Supplies, I recommend starting out cheap, buying Pencils and art paper at dollar tree or 5 below. If you want to go fancy Michaels is always a good place for traditional supplies. They also get in some good sales and discounts. For digital art, I recommend not starting with a screen art drawing tablet as they are usually more expensive.
For the Best art Tablet I recommend either Xp-pen, Bamboo or Huion. Some can range from about 40$ to the thousands.
💻As for art programs here is a list of Free to pay.
Clip Studio paint ( you can choose to pay once or sub and get updates. Galaxy, Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android, or Chromebook device. )

IbisPaint (free, phone app ONLY)
Medibang (free, IPAD, Android and PC)
NOTE: Some of these can work on almost any computer like Clip and Sai but others will require a bit stronger computer like Blender. Please check their sites for if your computer is compatible.
So do with this information as you will but as you can tell there are ways to learn how to become an artist, without breaking the bank. The only thing that might be stopping YOU from using any of these things, is YOU.
I have made time to learn to draw and many artist have too. Either in-between working two jobs or taking care of your family and a job or regular school and chores. YOU just have to take the time or use some time management, it really doesn't take long to practice for like an hour or less. YOU also don't have to do it every day, just once or three times a week is fine.
Hope this was helpful and have a great day.
"also apologies for any spelling or grammar errors, I have Dyslexia and it makes my brain go XP when it comes to speech or writing"
Boosting this in case any of the programs and books suggested are useful.
All the photos on this tumblr ad the animal photo reference site I run is another resource available for artists to use!
As long as you’re not using AI to create your art, you can reference / trace / draw / recombine / make any sort of art you want, with any of the photos, for free.
inception is a decent movie but there's so much horror tragedy potential written into its premise and the implications of its worldbuilding and being able to see that and do nothing about it makes me feel deranged
dream technology was developed by the military "so soldiers could practice shooting, stabbing and strangling each other". the only way to escape a dream before it ends is by killing yourself or convincing someone to kill you. you can live entire lifetimes in a dream, only to wake up to the disorientation of realising that only hours have passed in the waking world. prolonged exposure to dream-sharing tech carries the high risk of inducing psychosis to the point that you can no longer tell the difference between dreams and reality. you can carry a "totem" that behaves differently in a dream to counter this, but if anyone else gets their hands on it and figures out how it works, it's game over. dreaming is so addictive that some people sacrifice their waking lives to keep dreaming for longer. people can be hired to break into your mind and take anything they want from it, down to your most intimate parts, and sell them for profit. if that's not paranoia-inducing enough, entering someone else's mind carries the risk of being hunted down and torn to pieces by manifestations of their own psyche in a subconscious act of self-defence that cannot be controlled, because what you are doing is invasive and violent. the premise of the film rests on a superrich man hiring a group of people to fundamentally alter a man's identity because inheriting his father's corporation has the potential to make him a BUSINESS COMPETITOR. the leader of said heist team is so haunted by the suicide of his wife that he (unintentionally) caused by violating her mind to the point of madness that he locks the rest of them into a labyrinth of his own guilt, stalked by the minotaur her vengeful ghost. oh, and on the right cocktail of drugs, you can't wake up from a nightmare, and will instead end up in pure unconstructed unreality, surrounded only by decaying structures built by those who inhabited it before you, whose intentions and regrets might still haunt the landscape like a malevolent physical presence.
and you still have to go to work in the morning!
