#WRITING FANCY IS THAT EASY????#I THOUGHT IT WAS LIKE HOURS OF CAREFUL PRECISION#YOU JUST WRITE IT WITH A FOUNTAIN PEN
i mean. i mean for one i use dip pens, so the ink doesn't come from within the pen
and for two it took me around ten years to be able to make it look easy?
I think it's hilarious when people ask me how long it took to make something. Depends, do you count how long I spent practicing? I spent 4 days drawing flowers in the margins of my notes before willing to even attempt something in my sketchbook with the nice pens. You're seeing the 5th attempt after I moved from sketchbook paper to glass and this version is basically the first I was somewhat happy with. I'm probably going to redo it again at some point. (Low-key though, I painted something years ago that I wanna retry now. I'm just not sure if I wanna paint over it or save both versions. I also didn't have time for third attempts for a painting I made for my friend's birthday after my first attempt didn't turn out. I decided to skip being fancy and just did something more flat then I wanted. I have a stack of unfinished paintings because my sister stopped painting after highschool).
We went to the Pablo Picasso museum in Barcelona. Most of the works displayed were early in his career because that's when he lived in Barcelona. Or, they were the unfinished pieces he did prior to the complete works someone bought or ended up in the Paris or other museum exhibits dedicated to him. There were rooms and walls devoted to practice. He did hundreds of versions before delivering a finished peice. These aren't famous because nobody posts their practice prices.
However, Claude Monet has a number next to a ton of his paintings because he'd paint the same bridge so many times from so many angles. It would take hundreds of sunrises to capture the fog in a way that finally satisfied his desire to document a moment in time. And unlike a lot of artists, he thrived on showing all the practice. His first exhibit was a series of paintings of haystacks from different angles at different times of the day. "Oh I could paint that! There's so little detail!" Oh but Debra, you have no idea the amount of work that went into perfecting the composition and the angle of a line prior to deciding that this version would be the one delivered to the client as the finished peice. Nobody talks about the practice. How many Mona Lisa's were painted over because her smile didn't end up just right?
If you see someone willing to videotape the process and posting it, be aware that they are probably an expert that is now intimately aware with how much space the word Fuck takes up on a page. I wonder how many times they've written the word Orgasm to perfect the O. This is a flex. Someone flaunting how elegantly they write. They wanted to show off and be an aspiration to new enthusiasts still struggling to fit all the words on the page even with copious measuring and math. Praise an expert for making things look easy.
Conversation between my friend (L) who I'd introduced to FPs, and her friend (Y)
L: What color ink should I fill this pen with? Y: What colors do you have? L: *Gets up and shows Y the 43 ink samples in the test tube tray Y: …………Okay, most people when you ask them what color don't just bring out an entire friggin' collection of options… L: *holds up the 8-pack of turquoise ink samples from Goulet, still in a baggie, and another baggie with 5 other samples she didn't sort into the tray Y: What the fuck L: *stands up, grinning widely Y: I swear to God, if you hold up another bag of ink……… L: *Holds up another bag with the Noodler's Navy and 2 Diamine ink bottles Y: OH, MY GOD

My mantra half these days.
When you’re fancy, but sweary.
Cursive.
Happy Fountain Pen Day!
I’m not on Tumblr much these days, but hope you’re all doing well and being content and finding peace. Please enjoy this small stash of old photos!
@yiuoterw: Oh, gosh, I only just saw your question now, literally 1-2 years later. Ack, I'm so sorry! Anyway, this is the famous Jacques Herbin Emerald of Chivor! Hopefully by now, you know that. Note that only certain papers that bring out sheen really well, like Tomoe River, will create these results. This pic, as non-professional as it is, is my favorite to whip out when waxing poetic about how amazing fountain pen inks are.
Ngl i prefer the 2016 version purple on the right.
in which I watch other hobbies learn about the problem of getting consistent dye lots
what you have to understand is lamy dark lilac (2016, the real lamy dark lilac) still gets sold for hundreds of dollars per bottle by resellers when it originally sold for $10. and people bought it because they loved that limited edition ink so much. LDL is one of the grail inks for fountain pen ink collectors, and one of the most common reasons to mix fountain pen ink is to try to imitate it.
but the dyes used in the original lamy dark lilac are no longer even available, and it took several lamy representatives promising it was the exact same ink before anyone told the truth. and remember: THE DYES WERE NEVER AVAILABLE FROM THE START OF PRODUCTION. this is not a matter of inconsistency between batches, lamy knew that the ink would have to be completely different and they called it dark lilac anyway while several of their representatives communicated that it was the exact same ink.
people were fighting and fighting and fighting because it was obviously a different formula, it looked different, but lamy said it was the same, so the person doing the swab of the color must have been wrong, because lamy would never lie. and then when lamy admitted it was a completely different ink, there was fighting about whether or not it is wrong to call a product a re-release of the something while it is completely different. some lamy fans refuse to admit lamy can ever do anything wrong, when they do a ton of shit wrong.
there was no reason to call this ink a re-release of dark lilac other than as a cash grab for any sucker who had the gall to believe that when lamy calls something a re-release of one of the most beloved fountain pen inks of all time, that it would actually be the same ink.
I personally think that if you claim to be re-releasing one of the most famous inks in the world, it should actually be the same ink, or name it something different. lamy deep lilac. lamy new lilac. lamy green lilac because of the green sheen instead of the gold sheen lamy dark lilac became famous for. fucking, anything else
lamy is a piece of work, their quality control has been shit for years, and they make a ton of money by enshittifying their products for people who miss when they were less trash.
damn good thing the entire company just got bought out by mitsubishi pencil company.
Ooooop, there it is. It's not everyday that FP stuff makes the NY Times, and this made me check my bottle of 2016 Dark Lilac (There's 35-40% of it left, more or less).
Does anybody actually prefer the new version?
Original 2016 version all the way
I'd choose the 2024 one
Haul from Goulet Pens’ ink sample sale!
Highlights include empty Colorverse and Herbin 1670 bottles, a potential Robert Oster dupe for my beloved Sheaffer Turquoise (whichgotdiscontinued grumblegrumble), a lot of green overall (including 4 samples and of course the Clairefontaine notebook), searching for a favorite coral/sage green/light orange go-to ink, and Sailor Manyo Haha. It’s swabbin’ time!
Side note: I haven’t forgotten about the Galen Leather Writer’s Bag review, I’ve just gotten sidetracked with five other projects. The very short version is that if you’re obsessed with it, go for it, but Goulet Pens may offer a better experience.
Hi, pen friends!
Would anyone be interested in a review of Galen Leather’s Writer’s Medic Bag?
After years of having it on my radar, I received mine today!
Hello, friends! I'd like to say thanks to everyone who liked/commented requesting this review. It's in the works now, and I hope I can publish it in a week's time or so.
In the meantime, tonight I'll be taking a calculated risk and putting a thin coat or two of a color-restoration balm to see if I can boost the Crazy Horse Forest Green color a bit more. Fingers crossed!

Which fountain pen should i get. been kinda thinking of the preppy but It looks kinda, low quality compared to some of the others. Is the preppy good?
Hello! First of all, a big apology–I never received a notification about your message, so I hope you didn’t wait too long!
I totally and completely understand what you mean. I always refer to it as the “BIC Cristal” of the fountain pen world in that it looks super cheap and just not…very elegant or high-class at all. If you’re looking for a starter pen that’s really beautiful, the Preppy isn’t it (get a Pilot Metropolitan instead).
HOWEVER, if you can put up with the looks, I like the Preppy very much! The price, obviously, is a huge win factor, it’s the most inexpensive fountain pen I know of. Despite the cheap looks, the Japanese quality is top-notch–the nib is fantastic and the flow is consistent. I also like how it’s super light, too, which is good for people with smaller hands or those who get fatigued easily from heavy pens. If you plan to eyedropper it, the Preppy behaves wonderfully as well. The advantage of its looks is that you’ll feel more comfortable lending it out and won’t mourn so much if it gets lost or stolen.
The only thing to watch out for is that there’s a very slim chance you may order a Fine Preppy and end up with a “fine” pen that actually writes like a medium, like I did. In other words, I currently have two pens that are labeled as fine, but one nib is significantly wider than the other and writes similarly to my medium Pilot Metro. But the nib is super smooth, so no complaints! Bottom line: Yeah, it’s not pretty, but if you can make peace with that, absolutely go with the Preppy, especially if it’s your first fountain pen! I recommend a fine Preppy, maybe look into an Extra Fine as well. If you want something that’s prettier, go for the Pilot Metropolitan.
Reblogging for any FP newbies online tonight.
