hey did you know that uhh
i. the monster's body is a cultural body
ii. the monster always escapes
iii. the monster is the harbinger of category crisis
iv. the monster dwells at the gates of difference
v. the monster polices the borders of the possible
vi. fear of the monster is really a kind of desire
vii. the monster stands at the threshold… of becoming
oh shit i didn't expect this to actually get notes lmao
these are all direct quotes from jeffrey jerome cohen's "monster culture (seven theses)" (full pdf linked) i highly encourage you to read it yourself!
that said, while i think cohen's writing is evocative, it can be a little dense, so while i'm here, here's my capsule summary (you can also hear me talk about this in the first episode of my podcast) (listen to @ghostswerepeopletoo)
i. the monster's body is a cultural body - The monster is a work of fiction to be analyzed through tools of literary and sociological theory.
ii. the monster always escapes - As long as the cultural fear from which the monster stems persists, the monster will reappear in retellings, reimaginings, and sequels.
iii. the monster is the harbinger of category crisis - Monsters defy binaries and challenge easy comprehension or categorization.
iv. the monster dwells at the gates of difference - The monster represents the Other.
v. the monster polices the borders of the possible - Tales of the monster exist to discourage unacceptable or taboo behaviors.
vi. fear of the monster is really a kind of desire - Subjects can vicariously participate in the disruption of the social order through the monster.
vii. the monster stands at the threshold… of becoming - Within the monster we find information about the self.
people NEED to stop gatekeeping making music like ohhhh i don’t have an instrument ohhhhh i don’t know music theory ohhhhh i’m not gonna pay for some program. SHUT UP. take my hand.
you need NONE of that shit!!!!! there’s a website called beepbox.co. literally all you have to do is press things until it sounds a modicum of nice. it’s easy it’s free and it works on anything which has a browser because it’s a website.
if even ONE person starts making music bc of this post it will be worth it.
making bad music is just as important and okay as it is to write badly or draw badly or sing badly. you AREN’T BEHOLDEN TO MAKE GOOD MUSIC. making music is not utilitarian HAVE FUN. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!
love how people will encourage people to just start making shit and see what happens when it comes to drawing and writing but when it comes to beginner musicians (music makers if you wish to be less formal) it’s just COMPLETE RADIO SILENCE. it feels like no one even knows you MAKE music it just sprouts up from the ground one day and some guy picks it up. am i alone in this dark cave
Fuck it
I'm gonna try and make music
Call me betovan bc I'm deaf as fuck /j
HELL YEAH!!!
Alternatively if you wanna get into music producing in a more “proper” way, you still don’t need any money.
Ableton has excellent free websites to learn the basics:
Learning Music
Learning Synths
You can learn basically everything you need on YouTube. I recommend:
Mercurial Tones Academy
Dan Worrall
Bthelick
A lot of your favorite artists, mainly in electronic music, likely have done track breakdowns, you can watch those to learn how they do things.
DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) ultimately all do the same things, and Cakewalk is a great FREE fully fledged one. Sure it has some issues, and doesn’t have many plugins included, but it works just fine. All the music I released so far was made there, before I made the jump to Ableton.
As for VST plugins:
Vital is an excellent free synth
Native Instruments Komplete Start is a good free collection of plugins
TDR Nova is a great free EQ
There’s a lot of others and I don’t wanna name everything I’m aware of here, but feel free to DM me for more (Or if you have any other questions and stuff too).
And as for samples, you can get a bunch of free ones at:
Cymatics
Ghosthack
Having good headphones is nice and what I’d recommend you invest in first once it comes to it, but even your current ones will probably be fine, mainly if you slap AutoEQ onto them to flatten the frequency response. And ultimately, music isn’t all about the mixing, the most important part is conveying an emotion.
I know this goes against the spirit of the original post a little, but I want people to know that getting into music production also no longer costs thousands, you can just do it at home on your computer without no money.
Yeah, there is still quite the learning curve, I get that, though it’s also why it’s managed to hold me as a hobby for so long.
I do however have something of the exact opposite variety too, the most simple way to make music I know of, and a wonderful little semi-social experience, along the lines of the game Journey:
The New PLINK! is the long overdue update of #plink by @DinahmoeSTHLM. Jam with friends and strangers all over the world.
hi op i think you should know that i did indeed make a song for the first time because of this
I don't think there's ever been a funnier piece of lore in a video game then the etymology of the word "gun" in FFXIV
@wibbley-wobble So in XIV lore there was a queen named Gunhilder who ruled a country that was conquered by the big bad guy nation, galemald, and she had a royal guard called “gunhilder’s blades” who fought with swords that had triggers on them and were used for channeling magic, and these were called gunblades after the royal guard, When garlemald conquered bozja they copied the design of their swords but garleans can’t use magic so to adopt their fighting style they switched to a mechanical design that used black powder. Later on firearms were developed off of this concept and since they were “gunblades without the blade” people started calling them guns.
masterpiece world building actually
you know what's even better? that lore is a magicalized remix of the word's irl etymology and i think that's brilliant
Oh. it’s just real. It was really that silly.
Seeing this going around again for the umpteenth time I’d like to reiterate that I know about the real world gunhilder and about allagan siege weapons. To me the funny part is that in eorzea, gunblades were invented before muskets
Given how many weird things in FFXIV are based on real world crazyness, I imagine the Gunhildr thing was intentional. The lore team are big nerds and do that all the time.
Except for cellphones being thousands of years old technology that nobody uses anymore. I think they did that one on their own.
I think it's because the lion furries are kinda the most normal thing going on here. Like, most of the time a character's race won't ever be mentioned by other characters unless it's relevant, and it's very rarely relevant. The mysterious hypercapitalist that actually isn't that evil and funds a lot of important stuff is a lawn gnome and everyone respects him, at least to his face. The Aztec king has three kids, of which two are different species from him (and each other) and the only one anybody says anything about is the trueborn because the king was supposedly sterile. All three kids have equal claim to the throne and no one ever questions that. There are multiple times that literal aliens from outer space come down and everybody is just like Oh hi, nice to meet you.
whenever i look into a historical monarch who doesn’t get talked about much and is just kind of a blank spot in my understanding of the historical narrative, 95% of the time what i find is pure white hot blistering capability. a pencil pusher for the ages. a 39 year reign with no more than three hours of sleep a night. there aren’t any good stories from his reign because he systematically caught and stopped all catastrophic good stories before they could start. you shrimply must respect it
semi-related but it’s ironic that game of thrones famously neglects to worldbuild textiles when (for me at least) textile history has proven one of the best lenses for an “aragorn’s tax policy” grounded view of history, especially for a late medieval-early modern english setting. yes henry vii of england reinstated the court of the star chamber, but you’ll get a better sense for the character of his reign by looking at how and why and with what result he disrupted the trans-european alum trade. yes elizabeth i of england loved essex and killed him, but you’ll get a better sense for her reign by looking at her sumptuary laws, why she passed them and how they were obeyed. the history of european pin manufacturing sheds more light on spanish-english relationships than any anecdote of walter raleigh could
I love how the others Families of the Alliance treat Timoteo
He's a arrogant fool, think himself superior and controlling of even other families
Can you tell me more about their options? Don Leone and Don Alliata
The Vongola as perceived in the Mafia Land bit of the Daily Life Arc, are considered top dogs of the mafia. Being the oldest, strongest and richest mafia family.
Anyway, so they have reason to be arrogant, especially with their Special Hyper Intuition. Which uh.
Look. Intuition is defined as, let me do a quick search, thank you Merriam Webster
the power or faculty of attaining to direct knowledge or cognition without evident rational thought and inference
immediate apprehension or cognition
knowledge or conviction gained by intuition
quick and ready insight
So you take this down, and super charge it and that's Hyper Intuition.
What this really boils down to is subconscious pattern recognition.
Do you pay attention to how someone walks? Not really, but you can still recognize who is coming towards you on how they walk right? Or how they knock or what they smell like and thousands of other little things. So know you know who's behind you or who's calling because they usually call you after making some posts on social media or whatever.
So therefore the wider the information and knowledge base and experiences, the better the system works.
But also as is said in fic, with it being subconscious and it is the brain processing this without cognitive oversight... you get garbage in and garbage comes out. Kinda like generative machine learning software. You can get something that's mostly right and with the inevitable cognitive bias of remembering you were mostly right again and again.. you still wanna trust it. Mostly right is still over 50% right.
In some ways, when seen in that light, Timoteo's everything and his influence on the Vongola and wider Underworld still falls in the 'still right enough to be successful as Don and Famiglia.'
His sons, on the other hand show that you really only have to be mostly wrong once.
But still the hmm wider faith in the hyper intuition is built on confirmation bias is not what I expected to be writing on this morning with this ask.
Anyway the reason that Umei and I usually break the Vongola power bloc into Vongola Alliance in fics is that various local families and so on would also like to maintain their power and authority. And at its founding, nobility still had legal power that the peasantry wouldn't. Dynastic thinking and so on gave them a leg up on Giotto, who grew up in a poverty stricken town.
-=-=-=-
So the Alliata are the Alliance Breadbasket and Giotto's initial founding family. Since he started doing his thing, as Sicily was just. On fire. Politically and in terms of public disorder.
The Vongola as The Vongola came later, with the special rings and likely a quick change in branding to avoid legal repercussions. Lying to authorities is a time honored human tradition. Clamshell piety and so on. Remember Knuckles is a priest.
This older founding gives the Alliata some historical prestige but doesn't change the fact that they have large tracts of land that needs to be worked and protected and ties up significant amounts of resources within the family from working the fields to managing the sale of crops etc.
It's not that the Alliata have no influence, but they stay in their lane and focus on defense.
They did have more influence when Nono's wife was alive as she was an Alliata...
But I don't think we've mentioned much about Don Alliata's personal opinions.
Mostly because I'm not sure which Don Alliata you're asking about.
-=-=-=-=-
And then we get to the Superbi.
Who are hmm. A lot more organized about their everything. By design. The Superbi who end up in charge of other Superbi are usually dynastic long-term thinkers and doers.
Because unlike the Alliata who's meant as a social safety net and local community help, the Vongola were due to special rings, charisma, charm and audacity, the shield and sword arm of the Alliata. (There's viable historical reasons on why the Varia is the House Closest to Founding Vongola and why the Alliata split off as their own thing instead of being subsumed entirely under the Vongola; Giotto's choice to demilitarize was not well accepted by the Alliata)
The Superbi were loosely related families, who were by the time of Secondo/Terzo, a lot more coherent because with the Vongola inspiring order by point of force, Sicily now was a lot more viable market and had ports. This is also when the Superbi really started organizing lineages under thematic names. And why you do kinda need the family trees, because with the addition of the animal theming, that does make knowing who's who to who a bit of a trial. Growing pains of a new system but well. It works and has long proven to have been worth it in terms of influence, curse-protection, immediate recognition etc
The Superbi famiglia as seen by Pantera's planning of the reunion market and so on, works more as a Union for those born as Superbi or those employed by Superbi.
Don Leone's vaguely respectful of what Nono Vongola's done over his tenure as Don Vongola, but that doesn't mean he can't find the man a fool. If his sons are unsuitable as an heir/Don Vongola, he can find another relative to train. Perfect be the enemy of good and so on. It's not like Don Vongola's getting younger.
Just wanted to let you know that, even if I'm not into everything you write, I still love how you write, and that you write, and I am so thankful for all the stories you have written - whether I was into them or not, whether you finished them or not.
Thanks! Writing can be fun, especially when I'm chasing an idea, even if I usually fail to finish things
Yeah, finishing things though. The ADHD dream™
Personal bits under cut
Just wanted to send you and Umei lots of love for all the glorious fics you're writing ❤️❤️❤️
I am in awe and rereading several
Thanks you! Izzy rereads a couple of things as well, especially when Umei's in a fandom Izzy doesn't know as well
Izzy also regrets turning the dates on out of a curiosity of how long some of these asks has been in the inbox... (Nov '24)
Oh!! It's been a while since I saw you on my dash :) Hi!
Yeah, blame the ADHD it has its fixation phases and sometimes the stars aligned and I clear out some of my inbox.
I should probably clear out some more
But when?
After coffee
one big thing i think people outside fandom (like, all fandoms, fandom in general, not any particular one) tend to misunderstand is they know it's a subculture of people who are weirdly deeply invested in fictional media, and they hear about drama caused by people in those subcultures being unhinged in not-fun ways, and they think the unhingedness comes from the fact of being overinvested in works of fiction.
which is a natural assumption, but in my experience that's not really the case? like in my experience the drama llamas in fandom are usually not the ones who are just genuinely very deeply into the fiction. i've known people who are basically thinking about star trek or x-men comics or supernatural pretty much 100% of their free time and ime that type of person is usually very nice and surprisingly functional in their regular life. when someone's a constant nexus of fandom drama it's usually not that they are obsessed with the actual work of fiction the fandom is about, it's at least one of the following:
what they're obsessed with is not the source material but their unhealthy parasocial relationships with one or more of the people who created it
what they're obsessed with is not the source material but some elaborate shared-universe subset of fanfic about it that's only barely related to the original at this point, and/or an esoteric reading-against-the-text reinterpretation of the source material (often if the canon is active and ongoing this leads to becoming actively hostile toward it for its inevitably increasing failure to conform to their preferred fanon)
what they're obsessed with is not the source material but the fandom itself and gathering clout within it, so that the source material basically only exists to them as a tool for scoring points in increasingly arcane fandom disputes
and very often you get the same person doing 2 and sometimes even all 3 of these, and that's where the trouble really starts
holy shit I've never seen this articulated but OP is EXACTLY RIGHT.
IT JUST KEEPS GOING

Did you know? Tumblr DOES have a post length limit. Strangely, though, it's based on how many blocks of text you have. Supposedly this implies that you can have any length post so long as it's one block of text? Very strange, will have to investigate further.
Two limits! You can have a maximum of 4,096,000 characters in 1 [one] tumblr post. I would work out how many combinations this is, but 26^6,000 is already considered to be "Infinity" by most calculators, and a program I wrote threw an error code.
26^95,000 is already over 134,000 characters long - which would take 33 different text blocks to convey via tumblr. Whenever somebody says we're running out of posts, don't forget that tumblr is needlessly designed for MASSIVE amounts of information [no matter how detrimental it may be for mobile phones].
There are SOME works of fanfiction which are lengthy enough that you couldn't fit the whole thing into one tumblr post, but this is enough to fit Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy in it about 14 times over.
Don't hide that in the tags
The Lord of the Rings is generally my go-to measuring stick for "long-ass pieces of text", so I must additionally point out that, if written out optimally, about 2 full Lord of the Ringses would fit into one Tumblr post, apparently.
Though I'm not certain if that character count includes spaces, unfortunately, as I got that figure by googling "how many letters are in lord of the rings" and came upon a TikTok that counted the number of letter characters in LotR in order to figure out how many Spaghettios cans would be needed to re-write the entire thing, if one were to cut and paste each individual letter from the cans blackmail-letter style.
For those curious, the numbers are 2,261,081 letters in LotR, which calculates out to 8,795 cans of Spaghettios needed, which would cost about $12,225.
What a way to start my day. The internet truly is a beautiful place.
Hey! Guy who programmed most of the core pieces of the editor here!
So, those are the theoretical limits, yeah. But in practice, the editor is not even close to be optimized to handle these kinds of huge posts: there is a point, far far away from the size of the lord of the rings, that your browser would just crash.
So if you are planning to post long fanfiction, or anything, you better work on something that's optimized for long form (locally, or some alternative to Google docs) and then post in chunks.
So no, Tumblr is not designed to support these massive posts. It's theoretically possible, but that never was a real scenario we were trying to support
Editor crashes? No problem, I'm sure you can do that through the API though
I'm honestly very curious of what it would happen if someone tries something like using the API to post the entire Lord Of The Rings. I would assume the request would timeout, but it would be a cool test to run. Anyway, if it works, anyone trying to reblog that post would just insta-kill their browser :D
IT WORKED!
💬 0 🔁 0 ❤️ 0 · J. R. R. Tolkien The Lord Of The Rings. (1/4) ----------------------------------------------- THE LORD OF THE RINGS by J.
(okay this is just the first book, let me see if I can do all three)
oh yeah, almost a million characters, 365 text blocks, and the editor is handling it pretty well
Honestly, it works way better than I expected! I guess being plain text and not having to render any fancy formatting is enough for a modern browser to handle it well. Reblogging it took a few more seconds than usual, but went through too. Good job tumblr!
Here's the entire one, all 3 books + appendices:
💬 0 🔁 0 ❤️ 0 · J. R. R. Tolkien — The Lord Of The Rings. (1/4) ----------------------------------------------- THE LORD OF THE RINGS by J.
The API did return a 500 when trying to upload BUT it actually did upload
opening @full-lotr-test makes the app crash, I need to check on PC 👀
I just tested on my Android phone and it froze the app for about 30 seconds, but when I thought it was going to finally crash, it actually loaded the blog and started working normally
Btw, @sztupy, have you tried to edit the post? Does it work??
Yes, someone asked me to add a tag so they can filter it out, and I tried that over from the web interface.
For the first post (first book only) there was no issue. Edit loaded, I could add the tag, press Save and done. Note: this was on a PC using Chrome
For the second post (all three books) it worked the same way as the API. I could load up the page and edit it, but when pressing save I'd get an error message. However the edit did go through actually and the tag is now there.
Haven't tried to edit the text itself, but don't think it would make a difference - if your browser can load it'd just work.
(On mobile on a low/mid-range Android the App could open up the post without problems, but haven't tried editing. Using a mobile browser - Firefox in my case - the page could load but it was super slow, and buggy, and it also did crash once)
Also as a public service announcement: if you want to filter the post out from your dash the tag is #full-lotr-test
Also if anyone is interested I loaded up the entire LOTR trilogy in TXT file, then wrote a code that split it out into NPF (Neue Post Format, you know the new PDF or whatever) blocks of at most 4000 characters, then simply called the Create Post API with the resulting NPF block. I believe there's around 900 blocks in the second post above, each block containing somewhere between 3000-4000 characters, so close to the theoretical limit
That's interesting, opening it in the editor means that you don't only have the rendered html version, but also the JSON object containing all the blocks. I would expect it to at least stutter a little.
I tested it again from the android app, and scrolling through the post is really painful: it freezes the app for a few seconds every time you scroll an entire screen... So yeah, I think it would take hours to scroll through the entire thing . So anyone reblogging it is probably earning an unfollow from their beloved mutuals if they want to be able to use Tumblr at all that day 😁
Spell of "makes all your followers unfollow you"
surprisingly functional web site
Umei has the Uchiha family tree's on her deviantart, but does she have a list of the characteristics of the lineages somewhere?
I remember that it's mentioned that the mangekyo awakenings have different catalysts, that several (emotional) side effects are mentioned after usage, and of course different, jutsus per lineage.
But is there a guide like:
Toyotama:
Awakening: Betrayal, side-effects: emotional distance, possible jutsu/invocations: complete and partial transformation into a dragon
For her headcanons? Cause I'm currently confused why or how Tsukiyomi is part of the amaterasu lineage and if each jutsu has emotional side effects (tsukiyomi=cruelty) or if Izuna has a different side effect when he uses Susanoo.
My brain is currently going brrrr and I'm close to making a chart, but I thought that one might already exist 🥹
Yeah, Umei's got a list of the lineages and abilities. Izzy doesn't need all the information. So Izzy doesn't.
When it comes to the Uchiha, as Umei writes it in her fics... there's eight different extant lineages, a couple surprises... Of which we see only five, iirc? It has been a while.
We see Amatarasu, Yatagarasu, Toyotama, Raiden, uh the tracking one beginning with an O-, Sakura-jima's swords, the guy with the armorers... okay. More than five lineages have manifested in Umei's Naruto fics.
As for Tsukiyomi being part of the Amaterasu lineage... how best to explain this. The sharingan has its base abilities. Magenkyo is basically an aspect of divinity manifesting in their eyes.
Got it?
When it comes to the Amaterasu lineage, because the three primary manifestations of their Magenkyo techniques are sibling gods, it's considered part of the same lineage, as they have the same father. Most who manifest the Amaterasu Lineage's magenkyo can usually use at least two of the three siblings.
As for the different jutsu, causing different side effects? Yeah. They do.
A mental shift is required to properly hmm sync with the bit of divinity, as a way to minimize chakra use and eye-strain. It helps to do something of the myth as well, hence the SI-Izuna in a Little Tied Up series having a truly terrible day when she discovered that.
The Amaterasu lineage, having several different manifestations innate/learned to their specific Magenkyo have several mental training exercises to sync with their godly patrons (?) better. Again to cause less damage and cost less chakra.
Still repeated usage, causes patterns of thought that can become difficult to recognize as abnormal, such as a the decreased empathy. Which great if you want to continue to torment someone in an inescapable genjutsu. Less so if you want a functional human being able to maintain genuine relationships.
You are oke if the few people that hate Reborn
He pretty mich abused Tsuna into obedience
Had he abused Tsuna into obedience, Tsuna might be passing his classes
I'm not going to say that his various forms of training weren't bullying, physically demanding and medically ill-advised but
He's never pushed Tsuna to be obedient.
He usually pushes Tsuna into a situation and then use a Dying Will Bullet.
Semantics but uh.
It's usually Nono who gives Tsuna an order and wants it to be obeyed.
To you and Umei (I don't know if she has a Tumblr?): What're your favorite parts about writing? Like with the characters or the cultures (yours and nonfictional ones). It doesn't have to be those, by the way, those are just the first things that came to mind. Both you and Umei work great together and I love coming back to your stories, they're amazing!!
Umei has very limited social media by choice; no Tumblr for her that she's mentioned. She sometimes lives vicariously through Izzy's.
Izzy enjoys the discovery within fic. Either of cultures or characters. And how sometimes that discovery is a choice and it's knock-offs effects.
Izzy enjoys encouraging Umei to have spectacular consequences, for sometimes little choices, that just echo out. Sometimes they just echo out into oops, sequel.
Umei writes like she's possessed, but she's really just following the characters along, chronicling like an observer. Izzy feel like Izzy should send her a Dave Attenborough meme right now...
I finda Sawada Nana’s mental illness fascinating
She is weirdly clingly for such a neglectful woman
A little sexist, careless cruel, childlish and immature for a 34 years old adult woman
Mostly likely brainwhashed
I hate her, but she is interesting as a character
What's really fascinating is how no one in the manga pics up on uh Nana's subscription, because boy does she have issues and issues.
She clings to Iemitsu when he's there, when she's not otherwise taking care of him by feeding him, or doing his laundry or getting him alcohol that he drinks and then shares with the small children living in her home
Like okay, she's not clinging to him 24/7 but like. The kids who are theoretically dependent on you likely need more supervision than your theoretically mature adult husband who is not going to give small children 'magic water' can provide.
This however is Sawada Iemitsu. Lambo gets drunk.
Her naivety is pretty astounding, but she is exceedingly sheltered by managing to present a pretty flawless housewife facade to a husband who works overseas.
She doesn't seem to have a social circle of school friends, or even fellow housewives she sees at the markets.
She doesn't have a job outside of the house, so no work friends.
She doesn't seem to have a hobby outside of cooking and housework, so again, no friends.
She also has no mention of any family.
Those red flags are waving.
She's there to provide a service of food, clean clothes and a place to sleep for various characters and seems to enjoy doing so.
Some people enjoy doing so, but you only got to look at the Future Saga to see, that most people do not enjoy doing so for forever. That Nana does is one of the first signs we see of her being astoundingly off. Even when Bianchi has ruined her pantry for the upteenth time. Not a concern bout money here. Also is a sign.
Beyond falling for Reborn's tutoring flyer and failing to parent Tsuna. There's other bits in Daily Life Arc that are signs of Nana having greater issues than apparent but none of that really ever gets addressed in true shonen fashion because Nana and Iemitsu are in love.
Still pretty astounding that the only one who ever calls Nana out on her less than ideal behavior towards her son is Kyoko under the influence of a Dying Will Bullet.
