Budding social entrepreneurs across the 🌍 agreed to play our game. They answered 20 questions, so we all get to know them and their projects from the inside out! We only have 2 rules: 1. Be creative! Davide Arca /The Edible Forest /Liège, Belgium

Hi! I’m Davide, 21 years old. I study Business Management in Belgium where I live. My dream is to live in and from nature as well as to change the world at my own small scale. That’s why inspired by a book on natural farming by Japanese philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka as well as by my Italian ancestors respect for the countryside, I teamed up with my brother to start The Edible Forest Project in Olne.

We bought 22 acres of land, a mix of meadow and forest, with the aim to develop an agricultural project rooted in the philosophy of permaculture. We are growing as an open collective of people driven by strong bonds and a common aim to produce high quality (nutritious and environment friendly) food under fair and equitable conditions and promote its access for all.

A camp will be organized this fall 2016 for the enthusiasts, the curious and adventurous in our group, assisted by volunteers from all backgrounds.

Kim Stoddart / get badly behaved / Wales, UK //Q13.

What is the philosophy/ethics behind “get badly behaved”?

Encouraging people to give things a go, to question  the ‘normal’ we’re all brought up to believe we should aspire to and to have fun in the process.

So articles from myself and various contributors via www.getbadlybehaved.com on punk gardening, cooking and inspirational examples of positive ‘doings’.   Training courses at my smallholding in West Wales and much more besides to give people the confidence to become more empowered and resilient.

Louise Armstrong / Peckham Coal Line / London, UK // Q17. 

Where does art and creativity fit in the Peckham Coal Line project if anywhere?

The project is all about creativity. 

It started out as a creative design provocation. We’ve dared to dream, and give other people the permission to dream and image what the park could be too. 

The walks we have run celebrated this and are giving people the opportunity to imagine for themselves. The longer term aspiration is that the Coal Line can be a platform for creativity too.

Louise Armstrong / Peckham Coal Line / London, UK // Q11. 

What and when originated the seed that gave birth to The Peckham Coal Line?

Spotting a mature birch tree up by a live railway line, wondering why it was there. Uncovering that it was growing on the site of a former Coal Yard, a slice of history that had lain covered for years.

What project are you most proud of so far and why?

Our two books. 

With the first book, we created a piece of (lots of) work that nobody else, not even renowned scholars, have had the courage to tackle. Although we are only at the beginning, our first book is a huge step forward in the right direction. It represents, for example, a framework for courses in the field that we are creating by providing a textbook. At the same time, practitioners can use it as a handbook, so there is both a theoretical and practical impact. 

The second book will focus on farm animals and wildlife within the broader field of food safety. Again, something nobody else has put together in this way.

What originated the seed that gave birth to Food Law International LLP?

I was at a conference in Washington, D.C., and e-mailed my dad about the disappointment in what I was seeing as so-called “cutting-edge” food law. He said that I should do something about it, so I did.

Only if all of us take responsibility for the impact our everyday actions have on the environment and people around us will we be able to heal our planet. Oftentimes we hear:

 “But what can I do? I’m just one person, I don’t have any power.” 

That’s not true. We all count.

We decided that we want to strengthen the chain. We want to do our part. Do whatever we can. Pay attention to the things we buy. Where and how were they produced? Do we give our money to a big corporation or a small farmer, local designer…?

What is the relationship between What About Us (WAU)” and ARCHE NOAH?

As soon as we had the idea for the video we decided to contact them. Arche Noah has been advocating diversity and saving seeds for 25 years. We shot part of the video in their beautiful garden and some of the Crowdfunding money was donated to them.

Why did you raise money via crowdfunding?

GMOs are a topic that is relevant to all of us. So crowdfunding seemed to be a good way to raise some money while at the same time raising awareness.

How did it go?

We didn’t reach our funding goal on Indiegogo, not even close. But the fact that we put word out about the project drew in a lot of people and companies that wanted to support us. Location fees were waived. All the equipment and props that would have been quite expensive to rent were sponsored, as well as most of the catering. 

It was a very motivating and uplifting experience.

Singer-songwriter Gudrun Liemberger (Gugabriel) and filmmaker Alexandra Wedenig. We met in film school about 17 years ago. Since then we realized several artistic projects together.

What and when originated the seed that gave birth to “What about Us (WAU)”?

On April 29, 2015 we had breakfast. Gu played Alex a few demos for her new album. Upon hearing the song What About Us Alex had an idea for a music video. We did more research on the topic of genetically engineered crops and quickly realized that it would eventually become more than just a music video, that this was just the starting point. >> Demoversion of "What About Us" on Soundcloud
