Actually, Iella's first impressions of Wedge weren't all that impressive. She thought he was a hot-shot who had potentially been promoted too soon, but that he was mostly harmless. 

 Over time, she came to see the care and respect that he gave to his squadron. That caused her estimation of him to rise. Plus, it's hard not to respect the man's piloting skills. 

 Of course, her opinion now couldn't be further from her initial assessment. This post sums that up nicely...

“Not drinking with Wes and Hobbie to begin with?” She raised an eyebrow before digging into her desk and pulling out a sachet, which she handed over with a shake of her head and a smile.

“Dissolve this in a cup of caf and you should be good to go,” she told him. “Honestly, do you really not carry stimpowder with you? It is a life saver.”

Iella shook her head, not believing him for a moment. This was the problem when good people got promoted. They often had very little idea what to do with their newfound power, honestly. Mostly because they had never wanted it in the first place.  “I would suggest that you read through your orientation documents and then call some sort of command briefing. That’s probably your best bet.” she suggested, hoping he wouldn’t be offended that she was trying to tell him what to do.  But he was not the first brand new general she’d ever met, and he wouldn’t be the last, either.
