to me, the cruelest thing that eva stratt does is not the kidnappig itself. it's that she tells grace that he does not even have a dog. dr ryland grace, a man who dedicated his life to the greater good, first to science and then to teaching, does indeed not have a dog. and because of this, he has to spend his last precious moments on his home planet with the full knowledge that while he might be smart enough to save the world, he is not loved enough by anyone on it to be worth saving

the book scene where dubois and shapiro tell grace they’re having sex is really interesting. it’s not just that’s he’s uncomfortable talking about sex (although he very much is) it’s that he doesn’t understand why they would have sex if one of them is guaranteed to die in space soon. they kind of included this in the movie (when he asks stratt why everybody is partying and hooking up if they’re all gonna die)

there’s another line that stood out to me in the book, where amnesiac grace initially finds his dead crewmates, and he goes “i hope they weren’t friends of mine!” which imo is a crazy thing to say upon finding two corpses

it’s not just that grace avoids forming close relationships, it’s that he avoids it (in part) in order to avoid experiencing loss. really interesting character trait especially knowing he has no immediate family (did they die? is that why he’s like this?) not even a pet (is he scared the pet will die?)

Thinking about Stratt in Baikonur after the crew takes off and the Hail Mary shoots off into the sky. Her purpose is complete, she can only hope. It does not feel good. It does not feel right.

Tomorrow, she will fly to Geneva and debrief the UN. The Petrova Taskforce will be disbanded — temporarily, at her recommendation (someone will have to recover the Beatles in 30 years time), but she suspects they won’t listen to her opinion. She will step out of the building, and a hundred different countries will want to arrest her, and she will let them.

She’ll go to France if she can. She’s heard they have tolerable prisons. She will try to live out her sentence without seeing his face every time she closes her eyes, and she will fail, because he is the only thing she has ever allowed herself to have. (And she killed him. Of course she killed him.) He is the Antarctic and the Sahara and the science specialists who never got to fly. He is everything she sacrificed to save the world. And he screams like a terrified animal in her dreams. She is not cold-hearted by nature. With her directives fulfilled, it begins to thaw.

They will name dozens of extinction events after her. Law students will study her crimes. She will remain steadfast: she did nothing she regrets.

But dear God, there is a difference between regret and remorse.
