Is there some long, fancy German word for hate-writing poetry?Ā Because itās almost 4 AM and I canāt sleep because Iām hate-writing poetry.
In this day and age, especially, it's important to keep that spark of everyday magic alive. I still think back to when I was asked if I thought Goosebumps had ghost writers. I said probably, but I didn't want to look into it, because, really...
...I want to believe.
I want to believe RL Stein sits alone in a room and decides, "Today, I'm going to be afraid of eggs."
ALSO
ALSO!! PLEASE RB IF YOU LOVE SARAH & DUCK!!
I really do love the conversations I have with my toddler. ME: This ribbon is red! š TODDLER: *makes guttural hissing noises that sounds like he's trying to summon some eldritch horror*
Photos by my brother, a volunteer firefighter in Northern California, currently assisting with the Tubbs Fire as it assaults areas of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County.
I was born in Santa Rosa and raised in Sonoma County, itās surreal to see my home city go up in flames. Since last night, the Tubbs Fire has grown from 200 acres to 20,000 and has destroyed over 1500 structures. Many of our firefighters in San Diego have already left to fight the fires in NorCal, while fires now break out in areas of SoCal. Itās a mess, let me tell you.
If you can afford to donate to relief efforts, please do so. A simple Google Search of the Tubbs Fire will bring-up a donation option. If you canāt donate, please reblog and signal boost, the effort is much appreciated.
Please help us, you guys. I lost my home in the Tubbs Fire
Iām going to add some of my own photos and videos (now a gif) that I took:
Fire is still 0% contained. In total, there are 17 fires burning in NorCal wine country, 90,000 acres destroyed and 10 dead. Please spread the word and donate if at all possible.
Official update from CalFire as of today:
ā17 large wildfires that started in the past 24 hours continue to burn across California and have burned over 115,000 acres. The winds that fanned these fires Sunday night and Monday morning have decreased significantly, but local winds and dry conditions continue to pose a challenge. With the decrease in the winds combined with cooler weather, firefighters made good progress overnight. Sheriff officials have confirmed that 11 people have died as a result of the wildfires in Sonoma, Mendocino, Napa and Yuba counties. These fires have already burned an estimated 1,500 homes and commercial structures. Several Damage Assessment Teams have been deployed to get a full account of the destruction.ā
Please continue to spread the word, and donate if at all possible. Thank you for your help and support.
200 people now missing, and a total of 15 deaths. Another Red Flag Warning is in effect for the area for Weds. and Thurs., and fire is still at 0% containment. More areas have been forced to evacuate.
Iām doing a cheap commission drive for anyone who wants incentive to donate. You can find information here. Thank you.
Official Cal Fire Update 10/11/2017:
āOvernight fire conditions were very active on several fronts forcing additional evacuations across Northern California. Firefighters are battling 22 large wildfires that have burned nearly 170,000 acres. Firefighters are bracing for the winds to shift this evening and increase in speed. 17 people are confirmed to have died in the wildfires this week. 11 people alone died in the Tubbs Fire, making it the 6th deadliest fire in our stateās history.
While damage assessment continues on all the fires, it is estimated that at least 3,500 homes and commercial structures have been destroyed by the fast-moving wildfires. Emergency Declarations have been proclaimed by Governor Brown for Napa, Sonoma, and Yuba Butte, Lake, Mendocino, Nevada, Orange and Solano counties.
Red Flag Warnings have been issued for much of Northern California due to gusty winds and low humidity starting today. While these winds may hamper the efforts of firefighters, they will also increase the risk for new wildfires.ā
Two photos of my bro as he fights fires in NorCal. Very proud of him and every single firefighter and emergency personnel working around the clock to help save homes and lives.
If you live in ANY of the effected areas and are urged to evacuate, DO SO NOW. These fires have already claimed 17 lives and that number is expected to rise. Your house, your personal possessions, are NOT worth risking your life for. Material items can be replaced, people cannot.
Be smart, be safe.
Official Cal Fire Update: 10/12/2017
Fire conditions remained active overnight as over 8,000 firefighters braced for gusty North winds as they battle 21 wildfires that have burned 191,437 acres. Red Flag Warnings for gusty winds and low humidity remain in effect across the fire area and much of Northern California. These winds will continue to challenge firefighters in their efforts towards containment and will increase the risk for new fires. With high fire danger across California yesterday, a new large wildfire broke out in Fresno County. The death toll has risen to 23 across 4 fires as estimates remain that 3,500 homes and other structures were destroyed. Hundreds of additional fire engines and firefighters have been requested from other states, not only to help relieve crews on the frontlines, but to be ready for the possibility of new wildfires that may ignite during the Red Flag Warnings.
Official Cal Fire Update: 10/13/2017
Overnight firefighters continued their battle against 17 wildfires that have burned 221,754 acres. Several of the wildfires merged with other fires, while full containment was made on three other.
While several of the fires experienced winds overnight they were relatively light, but a Red Flag Warning has been issued for later tonight when winds are expected to increase again. Tonight the winds are forecast to be stronger that experienced Thursday with gusts up to 45mh.
The death toll has risen to 31 across 4 fires as estimates remain that 3,500 homes and other structures have been destroyed. Hundreds of additional fire engines and firefighters have begun to arrive from several other states, not only to help relieve crews on the frontlines, but to be ready for the possibility of new wildfires that may ignite during the Red Flag Warnings.
With wildfire risk high, residents are urged to remain prepared for wildfires. Learn more by visiting www.ReadyForWildfire.org.
Ā rnoachi replied to your link āHandbook for Mortalsā Pulled From āNew York Timesā YA Best-sellerā¦ā
Whatās going on omfg
LMAOOO. All right Ima try and explain this succinctly as possible. Basically this random-assĀ āyoung adultā book, āHandbook for Mortals,ā hit the NYT Bestseller List on the #1 Spot for the Hardcover Young Adult Category this morning. Only problem is that literally NO ONE had ever heard of this book before, like nada marketing, publicity, etc. Zilch. It was supposedly published by a company, GeekNation who only announced their publishing arm back in July.Ā
To hit the Bestseller list, the book would have had to sold at least 5,000~ copies within the first week, but a few people were quick to point out a major discrepancy where the book was literally out of stock everywhere in all major retailers, like legit you couldnāt find it on B&N, Amazon, and so on. Ā
YA Twitter basically crowd-sourced an investigation where a few anonymous booksellers revealed that they had gotten calls first asking if they were NYT-reporting bookstores, and then received bulk orders of the book but not caring when the books arrived.Ā Soooo essentially what happened was that this book scammed itās way on to the top of the NYT Bestseller List by figuring out which bookstores reported sales to the NYT (to determine what hits the bestsellers list, the NYTās methodology takes a sample from various bookstores, and this supposedly changes every week). They then ordered thousands of copies of the book from those stores and only those stores - and by doing so, this was all a scheme in the hopes of driving the book to the top of the bestseller list.Ā
The main impetus for hitting the bestseller list was for getting a better chance to have a movie adaptation of the book made with a label likeĀ ā#1 NYT Bestselling Book!ā which would have made it more appealing to potential investors. Butttt all of this was discovered and the NYT sent out a revision where they removed the book on the list a few hours ago.Ā
Someone also compared an excerpt of the book to an excerpt from āMy Immortal,ā so now thereās a conspiracy theory that the author, Lani Sarem, is actually the author behind that fanfic. Sheās also a former music manager who worked with bands like Blues Traveler, and the official Blues Traveler account weighed in and claimed that she was fired for āpulling these kind of stunts.āĀ
And IN ADDITION to all this craziness, you had the bizarre emergence of random early-2000s celebrities linked to all of this - Lani is apparently JC Chasezās (from N Sync) cousin who promoted the book on his twitter, and the co-founder of GeekNation (the publishing company behind this book) is Clare Kramer, who portrayed Glory on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and actor Thomas Ian Nicholas (American Pie, Rookie of the Year) was allegedly involved and planning to star in an eventual movie adaptation.
So, yeah thatās what happened in the last 12 hours of YA Twitter lol.Ā
This is the wildest thing and I love every minute of it.
#also let me be super fuckin real with you here #if we discover that āmy immortalā was written by jc chasezās cousin #i will immediately expire and ASCEND TO A HIGHER PLANE OF EXISTENCE (via @actualvampireang)
This doesnāt even cover half the craziness. Some of my other favorite parts:
- The cover wasnāt even revealed until the beginning of August
- The ONLY chatter on Twitter before this was a little blog tour theyād put together, but nothing else
- The distribution company behind this is the same people who distributed Milo Yadablahblah
- Whoever was behind this knew August was the best time to push a book onto the list (as opposed to September, which is bananas)
- Whoever was behind this knew the EXACTLY how many books to order form each store (the number that alerts NYT to start giving you a hard time is like 80 books at indies, so they went around and ordered 79 each.)
- But they were dumb enough to wildly over-order (they ordered over 18,000, over double what it wouldāve taken)
- Also dumb enough to straight-up tell the booksellersĀ āThis is for an event but itās okay if it doesnāt arriveā
- The book only has ONE blurb. One.Ā
- No trade reviews. No blurbs from other authors within the community
- The ONE blurb is from anĀ āinternational bestselling authorā
- No. Sheās a self-pub romance author whoās besties with LS
- You find all that out in the foreword (who puts a foreword on a YA novel???)
- Also the main character is 25 and there isnāt a single teen in this supposed YA novel
- Also also the cover may have been plagiarized
- Also also also the book knocked The Hate U GiveĀ to #2 and Everything, EverythingĀ off the list entirely, so people were maaaaaaaad
- And finally, when confronted with all this, the author tried to pull aĀ ā#KeepYAKind uwuā in her response to PW.
IT GOT WEIRDER
Iām getting a lot of this new stuff from Kayleigh Donaldson over at Punjabi.com, which was the first site to really pay attention to what was going down, and sheās kept at it even after the list was fixed.
- The cover was almost definitely plagiarized
- Carrot Top has weighed in. Yes, thatĀ Carrot Top.
- As has Jasper from TwilightĀ (yāall idek anymore)
- The various song lyrics quoted in the book were likely used without proper clearance as well (sheās cousin to an N*SYNC member, girl you should know better)
- Even TIME has started covering this, you guys
this shit just keeps giving, yāall.
My inspiration senses are tingling. This feels like the story of āA Day With Spongebob.ā
YEP. I was there speaking up during that. It was a rabbit hole of wtf-ery, and it still is, tbh.
Is there any hatred stronger than the rage kids get towards Barney the dinosaur as soon as they are just a little too old for Barney the dinosaur
So, this guy, Martin Pistorius, fell into a coma when he was 12 years old and eventually awoke completely paralyzed, at least physically. He was misdiagnosed. Doctors believed he was in a completely vegetative state, but in reality, he had regained full consciousness and awareness. He just didnāt possess any motor function, so he couldnāt communicate to anyone that he was alive in there. He lived this way for 12 years before he overcame it by sheer force of will and was given the tools to communicate. He tells his story in his book, Ghost Boy. Since then heās also been the subject of the first episode of Invisibilia on NPR and had his own TedTalk.
Anyway, the breaking point that incited his plan of escape was being forced to watch Barney reruns all day, everyday at his care center. Sitting in front of the TV, he learned to tell the time by the shadows on the wall. If he had time he could know when Barney would end. With the ability to measure his days, he was able to pull himself out of the void and ultimately start down the path to recovery. Today, Martin can communicate whatever he wants with the help of a computer program, but thereās one thing he canāt articulate: āI cannot even express to you how much I hated Barney.ā
So it turns out that the primal hatred people have toward Barney is strong enough to pull a disembodied consciousness out of the abyss of existential despair and into the physical world out of pure spite
Disneyās The Great Mouse Detective was first released on July 2, 1986.
It was ultimately Vice President of Walt Disney Feature Animation Peter Schneider who made the decision to change the title of the film from āBasil of Baker Streetā to its current title. On February 13, 1986, an inter-office memo was sent out to Disney employees in Schneiderās name announcing the renaming of the studioās most beloved classics. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) would be called āSeven Little Men Help A Girlā, Fantasia (1940) received the title āColor And Musicā, The Jungle Book (1967) was getting its title changed to āA Boy, A Bear And A Big Black Catā and so on in that fashion. Schneider was furious over the memo and attempted to find the author (animator Ed Gombert) so he could fire them. All the other employees found it a harmless joke and kept quiet. A copy of the memo eventually landed in the pages of the LA Times and all the ānewā names were incorporated into the āWhatās In A Name?ā category on Jeopardy! (1984). (x)
Itās true !
As seen here on the wonderful āLetters Of Noteā blog.
Other greats from the memo :
āTwo Dogs Fall In Loveā - Lady And The Tramp (1955)
āRobin Hood With Animalsā - Robin Hood (1973)
āPuppies Taken Awayā - One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)
āThe Little Deer Who Grew Upā - Bambi (1942)
This was amusing until I got to Aristocats. Thatās when it became hysterical.
