: Today is Moebius Syndrome Awareness day - here are some important words from someone dear to me @theveganpalette , laying out steps for how you can approach others with more care and consideration 💜 Please reflect, educate yourself, and donate!
“Each year friends all over wear purple to symbolize our Foundation and to start conversations with others about what Moebius is.
Moebius is a very rare neurological disorder that affects everyone differently, but major traits of it are facial paralysis, speech impediments, missing or deformed limbs, problems with vision and hearing, and low muscle tone, among other things. Everyone who has Moebius has it differently and no two cases are the same.
Because of this, I tell people about Moebius by describing how it affects me and mention everyone has a variety of traits. The most common frustration with Moebius is being stared at or not understood by others. Many teens with this have social anxiety and social problems because of bullying. I am here to inform you and spread awareness that those with Moebius are JUST LIKE YOU!
They are funny, charismatic, unique, and fun to be around. They have a different perspective when judging others and are able to accept others who are different. Not to mention pretty much everyone I know with Moebius (is gorgeous) and has extreme talent in some area that helps make their personality even more personable. For me, that is definitely my art [and fantastic taste in music].The next time you see someone with a facial difference, instead of staring at them, you should smile and compliment them on something they're wearing that you like, or the way their hair looks, or that they are beautiful. Do NOT use backhanded compliments such as, "You are brave," or "You have a nice face," because we already know that, okay? If you know someone with a physical difference, try giving them a non-appearance based compliment, such as
1. You make people feel good about themselves.
2. You're such a good listener.
3. You're really going to make a difference in the world someday.
4. I'm so glad I met you.
5. I love how passionate you are about
6. I never get tired of being around you.
7. You make people feel important.
8. You're so understanding.
9. I feel like I can tell you anything.
10. You're a strong person.
11. You're so good at being creative.
12. You can lead people without being bossy.
13. Your happiness is contagious.
14. You have really opened my eyes about
15. Our conversations always make me feel better.
16. I can always count on you to be there for me.
17. It's amazing how far out of your way you go to help people.
18. You're a selfless person.
19. You are always so much fun to be around.
20. You can make people laugh on their worst days.
21. You're so good at making people feel welcome.
22. I couldn't imagine my life without you
We are all human, we are all Earthlings, and we all deserve respect and love. So start being mindful about how you interact with those who are different, and treat them just as you would someone who doesnt have a disability. If you are a friend, please support me and my Moebius family by wearing purple and having a conversation with a stranger or someone you know about Moebius or other disability. Ask them how they normally interact or feel when they see someone different and ask how they think they might be able to do better, suggest something above, and tag me in a pic of you and your purple on FB! Also feel free to DONATE to the Moebius Syndrome Foundation below.
Cheers to disability awareness and a growing mindfulness about treating everyone with respect.“
