in my mind dave, rose, and to a lesser extent roxy are all into obscure experimental noise music (danger music and fluxus-type stuff that is mostly arrhythmic and entirely amelodic). i think dave starts listening to it ironically and sends it to rose, pretending to be into it as a joke, and she plays along with the bit + takes it upon herself to start seriously analyzing the songs and in the process begins sincerely enjoying it and puts it on and rambles about the sound textures and psychological effects etc to dave whenever they hang out. dave eventually also starts liking it it out of association with rose although of course he doesn't tell her this and continues to pretend like his engagement is totally ironic. this also plays out with alpha dave and rose, with roxy finding her mother's cassette collection and listening to them over and over trying to figure out what about it was so compelling to a!rose because it makes her feel closer to her
