If our favorite fictional characters, and what we write and create don't mean anything, then what even is the point?

If you're into shipping a couple of abusive and homophobic characters with their victims within a show that has a dozen queer characters, be brave about your opinion. Don't pretend it doesn't mean anything.

Maybe you just ship people because you think it's hott. Awesome. But don't belittle yourself; it doesn't mean what you make doesn't *mean* anything. Tom of Finland said he was just a guy who drew porn. But he also said he hoped his work would help the world accept diverse ways of loving. He knew his work wasn't pointless.

Anyway. Believe in what you love and create enough to understand that it isn't meaningless: it effects people. Whether it's here or on ao3, or just in your sketchbook, it has significance. Be brave enough to discuss it, even with people who you don't agree with. And if you CAN'T be, then just tag what you create so no one accidentally reads or sees something that triggers them. Easy peasy.

I think this is really important. In a show such as OFMD where we see a lot of non-normative couplings and groupings, and your writing or art then breaks those relationships in favour of ones which are more societally normative, is it wrong to ask why? When you replace the femme male lead in a same sex relationship with a cis female character, that has meaning. When you remove the indigenous femme-leaning man from a same sex relationship, and replace with a masc, white man that means something. When you replace a black male character who is in a relationship with an East Asian female character, and insert a white male, that means something. Art imitates life, we learn that in school. It isn’t meaningless. It tells us who we are.

Even if you think it has no meaning to you, there are modes of reception that means it has meaning, sometimes negative, for others. The making of meaning in art is a two-way process. People create for an audience, and that audience chooses how to receive and interpret what you make. The judgement should be reserved for the art not the creator, and no one should resort to ad hominem attack. But art cannot be separated from the people and society in which it is created, and reflecting on that, and the meaning of what is produced, is never a bad thing.

There are literally scientific studies out there that show that how children interact with dolls is a reflection of how they're socialized. This doesn't go away with age, as we can also see studies done on media consumption with adult, too. If, for example, a man can never "relate" to things that a woman creates, it sure means something. It is asinine to pretend that how people interact with media means nothing (even framing it as "playing with dolls") since it's the opposite that's very obviously true

But I agree: in fandoms, we see people who have lost a passion for the piece of media but stick around in the fandom out of habit. Of course things have meaning. Our lives are so short, and it's pointless to spend so much of freetime on something if you think it means nothing.

One time I was leaving a friend's place and an older lady with basically no English came up to me and communicated that she was very cold and needed a ride. She pointed to tell me where to go.

It's always "Ed traumatized the crew!" and never "Izzy traumatized Ed and the crew!" I mean, Izzy was D-E-L-I-G-H-T-E-D at the turn of events at the end of S1, while Ed was shown crying alone in his cabin. Three months go by, and Izzy then went, WHOOPSIES! I may have done bad!, after he was told he was replaceable, not because he realized all the attempted murder and threats and horrific behavior were bad.

But it's never "Izzy traumatized Ed and the crew."

Izzy Defenders always act like Izzy went directly from the S1 finale to Unearned Cuddle Puddle. No! S1 to S2 is one of the only times we have a concrete elapsed time counter given, and it's THREE MONTHS! At the beginning of that, Izzy, who AGAIN was DELIGHTED and smiling and gleeful at the end of S1, 100% continued his S1 behavior of physically assaulting the crew (seen in 1x2 and 1x4), doing homophobic bullshit (seen in 1x5), denying crew food rations for the tiniest of slights (seen in 1x9), doing racist bullshit (seen in 1x9), bitching and whining at every task Ed gives him (seen in 1x3), disobeyed Ed's orders to do a power grab for himself (1x6 and 1x9), embracing colonialism when it suits him (1x6 through 1x9), lying for his own gain (see all of s1), screaming unhinged emotional abuse and threats at Ed for no damn reason (seen in 1x4 and 1x10), and so on. The only thing that changed in Izzy's quest for power and control in S1 (his only storyline) was that he found out he couldn't keep power on his own and needed Ed to shield him (seen in 1x9, boiling over to the 1x10 confrontation, which was disturbing and violating, not "fucking hot"). This behavior absolutely took up much of that three months, including the escalation of emotional abuse toward Ed to keep his own power. Why no "Izzy traumatized Ed and the crew"?

Even after he was "good" (lol?), he still thought his obsessive desire for control over Ed was "love" (2x1), passed responsibility for his actions onto other people (2x3), violated boundaries (2x5, 2x7), still was a rude POS for no reason (2x5), still femmephobic and gross (2x5, 2x8), never integrated with the crew (2x5, 2x6, 2x7, 2x8) despite it being his alleged "found community", still was seemingly ok with colonialism if only they dressed more manly (2x8), still claiming ownership of Ed's accomplishments (2x8), never apologized at a point where he could show a real acceptance of his horrible behavior (2x8), and so on.

All the defense of Izzy depends on ignoring what he did in show and invent bullshit that makes Ed look horrible or hand Stede's accomplishments to Izzy (2x3, 2x5). Izzy was never kind to anyone. Izzy never tried to make amends for his behavior. Izzy never treated a single person with basic decency or respect. Izzy never made up for his S1 abuse or did any redemptive acts. Izzy was there as an example to demonstrate the goodness of others but showed no goodness himself.

But it's never "Izzy traumatized Ed and the crew."

Izzy tried to force Ed watch the man he loves be executed TWICE!, and no "Izzy traumatized Ed!" Izzy was a selfish, unhinged, and violent lunatic, and no thoughts to the people he terrorized and abused?

He also used dehumanizing language for both Ed and Stede, saying of both that killing them was humane and better, comparing both to pets and wild animals. We saw him screaming at Ed that he was insaaaaannneeeee and incapable of functioning as a grown adult without him, and still never, "Izzy traumatized Ed and the crew."

But if you imagine he had a Goo Reason, it's all OK, and he's the one who was the Real Victim Here.
