little green men book project A book about the detection of the first pulsar by Jocelyn Bell Burnell and Antony Hewisch. It contains scientific data about the neutron star and biographical informations about the discoverer. At first they thought they dedected extraterrestrial life, so the star got the nickname “little green men”.

I Was Homeless And Video Games Saved My Life (from Kotaku)

I’m not a do-gooder. I mean, I don’t usually go out of my way to do nice things for strangers. But this article shows a personal account of this reality, which is powerful and I have to say...made me rethink a bit. 

It’s cold and snowing these days, and just the other day when I was walking downtown with some friends there was this homeless man lying right in the middle of a sidewalk on top of an air vent, while it’s snowing and -15°C. Like usual, we walked right by him and didn’t even spare him a single look. 

But this article talks about how one of the worst things about homelessness is the invisibility that comes with it. People ignore you, you’re not treated as human, but rather as furniture as they walk by you. That really hit me because call me naive but I’ve never really thought about it like that. But it’s so true. 

And it’s funny because I’m a fanfic addict, and I do indulge my guilty pleasures in certain “types” of fics. Sure I love hurt/comfort and angst in general, but themes of dehumanization fascinate me. I enjoy reading about characters stripped of their identity and placed at the bottom of society. They lose their freedom, their agency, and are no longer treated as human. And call me sadistic, but I love reading about situations like that. Of course, I always imagined since its fiction, it’s all detached from reality. 

Well, the parallels of that issue addressed in this article and those fics I read were enlightening to say the least. In fact, perhaps the fics I’ve read have even given me a glimpse of being in the shoes of these people since they are very similar situations. I’m still not sure of how to regard homeless next time I see one, but at least it’s helped me understand their situation just a little bit more.
