Joy's enthusiasm made Destiny smile, even if she very much was not wanting to smile these days. Or felt like she didn't have very much to smile about. For the most part, since getting home from the hospital, she had laid about, tired and upset.

But Joy reminded Destiny that it was sunshine and summer just outside her window.

"A few weeks for the concussion and the sprain," Destiny said. "It isn't my cane wrist, at least, so there is that. I dunno. Mummy wants me to stay in until I've healed up fully, but...I love summertime and I feel like I'm missing it all."

It wasn't Mrs. De Vil's fault?

Damn, maybe Destiny had hit her head hard in the whole process of the accident. Nuka wouldn't rule that out anyway. She did seem to have some sort of head bandage thing going on there. Maybe that brought on delusions of Mrs. De Vil being a sane driver.

"And how fast was she going when she got cut off?" Nuka asked, and then winced because well... how would Destiny know that for sure? He hadn't thought that question through. "Sorry, this isn't meant to be about all that. I've just seen her tearing off down the street when she'd leave and I didn't think she was the safest driver around."

Destiny didn't know. She shrugged her shoulders in a bit, like a hermit crab crawling into it's shell. Her mother had already chided her plenty for how stupid she'd been. Destiny knew. But, at the same time, how was she supposed to have known? It wasn't like she had driven much with Mrs. de Vil. It wasn't like she got in the car with pretty much anyone besides her mother.

She wasn't sure what to say to Nuka. He was right, after all.

"Yeah, well," Destiny said softly. "I didn't think something like this would happen. Obviously."

It had been a busy few weeks around the thrift shoppe, but now that Pride, Prom, and graduations were over and done with the place had cleared back out to the normal amount of people coming and going. It had given him more time to put toward a personal project he had been working on! One that had taken him much too long, given what said project was.

And when he heard about what had happened with Destiny, he'd had a serious post-possession attack (at least, that's what he had been calling them) due to the intense guilt that had emerged. Paired with the exhaustion from all the work, anyway. All this time, he had been telling himself he wasn't going to take this second chance at life for granted and there he had been– getting too invested in working rather than doing something for a friend.

A friend who could have been gone before he had gotten the chance to give it to her.

He had finished it and then had tried figuring out the best way to get it to her. Only his plan sort of went out the window when he saw her out the window! Ken dropped the box he had been holding and hurried out of the thrift shoppe onto Main Street.

"Destiny!" he called, and started forward, only to bump into someone. "Oops. Sorry. Excuse me! I just have to–" Ken navigated around the others on the sidewalk and jogged to catch up until he fell into step beside her. "Destiny, hi! It's Ken."

Destiny had begged and begged her mum to let her out of the house. Her wrist was still aching, but it wasn't the one she used for her cane. And her head still hurt a bit but that was going to last for weeks and she'd basically liked to her mum about how long it would take anyway, because if Miracle knew, she would never let Destiny out again. (It was a good thing her mother was a mermaid---who healed quickly.)

But Destiny was restless. The last year had given her a taste of the outside and she wanted to go back. Her friends actually missed her, checked in on her, and wanted her to come out.

So, she'd gone out with an escort today. Her mother, of course, but she had convinced her mum to rest at Hatter's while Destiny took a loop around on her own.

It was going well, until someone called her name and she startled slightly, then nearly tripped over a bin, catching herself, but with the side effect of twinging her wrist.

"Hi!" Destiny said, with a little breathless laugh as she pushed some of her hair back. "You don't have to tell me that, you know. I know your voice." Her cheeks warmed a bit as she said it. She never wanted people to read into it...but she also didn't want them to think she didn't recognize them. Even if it wasn't the usual way people did.

Nuka's eyebrows shot up.

She was supposed to make him something? That didn't make much sense to him. Especially since she was the one who'd been all messed up. Granted, Nuka himself would never have gotten in the car with someone like Cruella De Vil. He'd only had to get a brief glimpse of her driving one day to know that seemed like a horrible idea.

"You might be the first person I've met who'd apologize for not doing something when you're the one who got hurt," Nuka remarked with a bemused smile. "Don't apologize to me. Just get better. And you know... maybe don't get a ride from Mrs. De Vil. The woman does not care about road rules."

Destiny blushed.

She hadn't meant to say any of that. It was just that she was disappointed. Nuka had been so lovely, taking her to prom last minute when he didn't even know her and she had been so appreciative. She had wanted to do something nice for him.

But, instead, here he was! Visiting her in the hospital! She was mortified. (And also, maybe, a little pleased. Butterflies danced in her stomach.)

She managed a small laugh. "Yeah, I-I guess I figured that out. It wasn't really her fault, though," Destiny couldn't help but defend the woman who had been so kind to her, "she got cut off."

"Oh yes, that's who I would recommend. If you didn't have him, I would go right down and get you on his care," said Jun, as if he had the authority.

And of course, he didn't. Yes, his medical license might be active, but he was no doctor here, and hadn't been a doctor for years and years!

But in situations like this, Jun liked to pretend he had some control. It made him feel less anxious. And omo, looking at Destiny, so frail in this hospital bed, thinking of her trapped in a mangled car with that terrible De Vil woman...

Jun was anxious indeed.

"I taught him, you know. Well, not just me. I was his resident years and years ago. But he was very talented, and even more importantly, he was a hard worker. He studied well," rambled Jun. "So you are in good hands with him. Did you break anything?" Annnd back to fretting. He walked a bit closer. "What about a concussion?"

Destiny's eyebrows twitched at the surety in Jun's voice. She appreciated it, but she didn't expect it. She hadn't expected him to visit her at all, let alone make it his business to make sure she had the best trauma doctor that Swynlake had to offer. She hadn't expected anyone, really, to advocate for her besides her mother.

She smiled a little, when Jun explained how they new each other. It was a fond kind of smile. A knowing kind of smile. Jun had always come off as a proud sort of person to her--and this proved it.

"No breaks," she said. Thankfully. Destiny didn't even want to know what that felt like, considering how she felt already. "I sprained my wrist, just a little, apparently. And yes, I have a concussion...but they did a CT and everything looks okay," she reported.

"I should get to go home tomorrow. Nothing to worry about!" She smiled, though it was a little forced.

"Lemon bars!" She sing-songed. "I got Arista's recipe so they should be really good."

Ooh, Destiny really did love lemon bars. They were perfect for this kind of weather. They were also perfect for laying around in bed in this kind of weather--where she desperately wanted to be outside. The tart treat would be the perfect amount of sweet and bright. Just like Joy.

"I'm okay," Destiny said. "My head hurts a lot." And not just because of the large, stitched up cut on her forehead. "I have a concussion. And a sprained wrist. Besides that...I'm fine. Just a little banged up. It definitely could have been worse."

After the accident, Cruella had been reeling a bit.

It was miraculous that she had escaped the vehicle unharmed. Well... not miraculous. She was quite sure that it had everything to do with her companion in the car with her, Destiny. She wanted to speak to her about it immediately. But of course she couldn't exactly disrupt her healing time in the hospital or what not.

Cruella had had no intentions of visiting there.

Luckily it seemed Destiny had chosen to visit her! Perfect! Cruella had the butler answer the door and set up a tray for tea and some biscuits. "Oh how very kind of you darling," Cruella said, reaching out to take the lemon bars and put them down on the tray with the tea. "Come sit down. I'm doing quite well of course. Thanks to you I imagine," Cruella added.

"How did you do that anyway?"

Right...so, Cruella did know.

Destiny paused in her sitting down. Just a brief hesitation before she sat all the way.

She had never had this conversation with someone before. Her mother had done a very good job of telling her, ever since she was very small, that no one could ever know. Destiny knew all the reasons why: the people who would want to use her to heal every ailment they had, people who would want to pull her apart and experiment, and those who would simply be jealous.

She had no idea what category Cruella may fall into and she had no idea how much to say.

So, she picked up her cup of tea (searching for it gently). She took a delicate sip, trying to think. Her mind was terrified and blank, however. All she had was the truth. Maybe that would be enough.

"I don't know," she said softly. "I've always been able to do it. For as long as I can remember."

"Why am I not at work? Destiny, why are you in the hospital?!" was Jun's flustered response.

Yes, yes, he knew the technical reason why. There had been a car accident, which-- by itself, Jun found very odd! Swynlake was a quiet sort of town with slow, meandering streets. Yes, leaving and coming into Swynlake, you had these long stretches of roads that could feel rather dicey when it was dark and rainy. But Isabela Madrigal had even put in additional lights out in the farmlands now, so that helped! What had happened? And why, oh why, was Cruella in the car?

Jun frowned very deeply, moving deeper into Destiny's room. At least she was not in any grave danger, or so it seemed. His eyes jumped to the monitors anyway; her steady heartbeat was a small comfort.

"Who has seen you? Was it Mitchell?" Jun asked. "Do you have enough blankets and pillows? I can make sure someone brings you more if needed!"

That was a fair question--but it still didn't answer why he was here.

She frowned too as he moved further into the room. His fussing was almost as bad as her mother, though, at the moment, slightly more tolerable. Even if she had been kind of annoyed with him the last time that they'd met.

Prom already felt so long ago. And it had been a very nice night, so she was happy to let bygones be bygones.

"I have everything I need," Destiny said. "The nurses are very kind. And yes, my doctor is Dr. Mitchell. Do you know him? Is he--good?"

He had seemed very nice, but Destiny knew that Jun had been a doctor once. Maybe he knew something she didn't. That thought made her a little anxious and she started playing with the hem of her blanket with her good hand.

A Cupcake for Your Woes? ~~ [Snowy]

Yes, the bruise was ugly and horrible, though you'd never know it. Not with the way Destiny still smiled, her usual bright and optimistic self. Snow was sure it had been a terrible car accident though-- very scary and sudden. It was the sort of mundane thing that felt shocking in a place like Swynlake. People expected things like the dreams or encountering a stray gryphon in the woods or-- well, a murder-clown in a club on NYE, for a recent example!

They didn't expect a car crash. In fact, most people who lived in Swynlake didn't even have cars.

It made Snow especially grateful that Destiny was alright and that they were getting closer. Their friendship was still so new, but hopefully they could continue to deepen it with time.

"Oh, I'm-- I'm good, really. All Summer is really coming together. Of course, there's still a lot of work to do-- I want to repaint the whole kitchen and probably find new wallpaper and everything, but-- well, that will happening eventually. We need to fully move in first," she said. "Oh! And I made that cupcake recipe you sent me! I figured I could get the feedback you sent me," said Snow, turning toward the counter so she could fetch a cupcake for Destiny.

Destiny was eager to hear all about Snow's new house. It was better than thinking about what was going on in her own life.

Things like engagements, weddings, and new houses were simply so much better. Not that Destiny was jealous. (Okay, maybe she was a little jealous.) Mostly, she was just happy that all these things were finally happening for Snow. She knew that the other woman had wanted it for such a long time and fought so hard for it.

Though, it did make her want to ask about what had happened with the wedding being postponed. Snow seemed happy enough...but Destiny knew better than most how easy it was to keep secrets.

"I'd love to try them, I'm sure they're good," Destiny said, moving a little more into the kitchen. She heard the floor creak above her and glanced up. Apparently, it was two floors...good to know.

"What color do you want to paint the kitchen? Actually, wait, what color is it now?" Destiny was no interior designer, but she was happy to hear about it anyway. It might make it easier for her to picture it.

Snow really felt bad that she hadn't gone to see Destiny in the hospital. She'd meant to-- but moving into All Summer was like a full-time job on top of her full-time job, especially as their furniture started getting delivered. It didn't help that Snow was struggling to feel safe in any place that wasn't the Hauntley and All Summer-- she and Gem had even gone to their little Thai place a week ago and she'd been jumpy the entire time, worried that Carmen might attack there next.

That thought haunted her whenever she thought about going to the hospital. It was like she was carrying a curse-- and everywhere she went, she risked other people falling into the curse's shadow.

None of this was a good excuse. She should have just gotten over herself. She should have gone to see her.

At least she would see Destiny today.

The kitchen smelled like butter and chocolate. "Destiny, hi! Oh my goodness, is it okay if I hug you?" Snow came around and approached her, and when she got the okay, she went in for a hug. "How are you feeling?"

Destiny lifted her arms and wrapped Snow in a hug. Or maybe, she was wrapped in the hug. The smell of butter and sugar and flowers all wrapping around her. It was a comforting embrace, enough so that it made Destiny want to start tearing up.

She didn't start, but it was a near thing.

The floorboards creaked uncertainly behind them.

"I'm gonna--go upstairs," Gem said and then turned and scurried away before either of them could really say anything.

Destiny squeezed Snow once more. "I'm okay," she finally answered Snow's question as she let go.

"Sore and my wrist is a little sprained but besides that and some bruises, this is really the worst." She touched the stitches on her forehead, which she was sure was ugly and horrible. She was glad she couldn't see them.

Joy knew better than to show up empty-handed to worry after your friend after a car accident, but considering how good of a baker Destiny was, Joy knew she couldn't show up with sub-par cookies.

So she made lemon bars! And brought flowers of course, to add to Destiny's surely growing collection.

Destiny's mother let her in and showed her to Destiny's room.

"Heyyy, Destiny. I brought sweet treats!"

Destiny was very bored.

Her life recently had been exciting and nonstop. She had been enjoying it, even if it made her tired.

But now, everything had ground to a halt. Slammed to a halt, really. Somersaulted into a halt like slamming on the breaks. It had felt like being airborne before crashing back to earth.

And she was bored, stuck in her room, with nothing to do. Her mother wouldn't even let her into the kitchen to bake. Saying she was too tired (she was) and too injured (she wasn't!).

When she heard another pair of footsteps following her mother's, she perked up, sitting up a bit more in her bed and putting her knitting aside. Her hair was a mess, but she briefly tried to smooth it out before whoever it was appeared.

Her eyes lit up with surprise when she heard the voice.

"Oh! Hi!" Destiny said, smiling. "Wow, thank you."

"You girls have fun. Don't get too overexcited, Destiny, you need to rest."

"Yes, Mother," Destiny said and waited for her steps to retreat before she turned to Joy again. "What kind of treats?"

Destiny didn’t remember what had happened.

She came to consciousness slowly, feeling everything ache. Her whole body hurt. Her bed felt scratchy and uncomfortable. There was a strange beeping. The sharp smell of cleaner in her nose. 

Where was she? 

Destiny jerked a little, the beeping following the jump of her heart. “Where am I?! H-hello?!” 

There were hands on her shoulders. “Destiny! Destiny.” That was her mother. 

Destiny’s head turned towards the familiar sound. She felt her shoulders drop at once and her head fell forward against her mother’s collarbone as Miracle gathered her daughter into her arms. All at once, Destiny started to cry. She wasn’t even sure why. Her hand came up, grabbing onto her mother’s elbow as she held her and cried. Something tugged on the back of her hand, a sharp pain shooting down her hand. 

At first, her sobs came in great, stuttering breaths that she forced from her lungs. And then, they came shallower, like she had suddenly grown gills and couldn’t breathe in oxygen anymore. Eventually, she just cried, tears spilling from her eyes and her body shuttering with adrenaline and exhaustion. 

“W-what happened?” Destiny finally asked, drawing back and looking up at her mother.

In a small town, word spread fast. Usually, that word was not very interesting or involved petty drama-- someone reported someone else to the Southern Isles HOA; this person was seen flirting with TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE at Hatter's at lunch and then at dinner; that person had illegally parked in front of the Moon Market!!!!; and so on and so forth.

But this time, the news was truly newsworthy: there was a car crash.

And Destiny Paras had been in the car and raced off to the hospital.

Jun had been told this by one of his sisters-- the most plugged-in, Miss Star herself, who yelped and gasped when she saw the update on Twitter. Jun had frozen in place, his brain temporarily turned into a tofu scramble. It just made no sense. Why was Destiny in a car with Cruella De Vil? What had happened? Was she going to be okay?! He wanted to rush right to the hospital, but of course he knew that was a dumb thing to do, because no one would let him see Destiny anyway or give him any information, at least not at first. So he waited the appropriate time and went a day after the initial crash to see how Destiny was doing.

He still entered the room very dramatically, rushing in and looking quite frantic.

"Destiny! It's Jun Moon!" he declared. "Oh dear, are you alright?"

The only thing that alerted Destiny to someone at her door, at first, was the squeak of a shoe on the linoleum of the hospital floor. She was getting very used to the rhythms of the hospital. The intermittent beeping of the machines and the nurses' voices at the station just outside her room.

The squeak of the shoe was out of the ordinary and had her head tilting towards the sound.

And then Jun Moon appeared in the doorway.

"Jun?" she said, more out of surprise than anything. He hadn't needed to introduce himself, she knew his voice. Even as it sounded a little breathless. Of all people, she didn't think he would be here.

"Why aren't you at work?!"

So Cruella De Vil and Nuka's prom date Destiny got in an accident. In truth, it didn't especially surprise him that it would happen to Mrs. De Vil. He had seen the way she pulled out of the driveway and zipped around town like she was playing need for speed or grand theft auto.

So her getting in an accident was entirely probable. But what wasn't as probable, and honestly sucked was her companion getting hurt in the process. The whole story was suspicious anyway. How had Mrs. De Vil come out of that with hardly a scratch and left Destiny to suffer?

In any case, Nuka figured he'd go visit her. She was a nice girl, and Nuka didn't really spend much time around nice girls. He figured he could bring her something to make the time there a little less miserable. He went to the flower shop where he got a bouquet of peonies and yarrow, both said to symbolize healing (and apparently had actually helped heal in the past, he hadn't fully understood) and a box of chocolates since he didn't especially know all that Destiny liked. She did say she liked sweets too.

So he found his way to the hospital and asked for her, getting led back to her room pretty quickly. He knocked lightly on the door before making his way in. "Hey Destiny... how're you feeling?"

There was a knock at her door, which meant it wasn't her mother. Who had been glued to her side ever since 7am that morning when visitor hours had started. She had only left now at Destiny's urging to go get something to eat.

As soon as she heard Nuka's voice, she was glad that her mother was gone. Miracle didn't need to see the way Destiny's cheeks warmed. And Destiny didn't need an interrogation on top of everything else.

Why was he here?!

"I--no, no--I was supposed to bring you cupcakes! Oh, I was going to make them today." She touched her head, wincing at the bruise and cut there, hidden under gauze. "I'm sorry."

There were many people that Destiny wanted to see. She had been bedridden for nearly a week. Once, that wouldn't have meant anything to her at all. But now, she had friends who texted her their concern and even came to see her in the hospital!

Snow wasn't one of the ones who had visited her, but Destiny understood. She had tried to organize a time, but it kept not working. So, once Destiny was feeling more sturdy, she had promised to make proper plans with Snow.

So, here she was! At Snow and Gem's brand new house!! How exciting!!!

She wished she had the proper enthusiasm that was required for such a momentous occasion, but she was still utterly exhausted, just walking carefully up the long drive and finding her way to the porch stairs was enough to leave her exhausted.

"Hello!" Destiny said, when the door opened, hoping that it was, in fact, Gem and Snow's house and her Uber hadn't messed up on her. (A common fear she had, especially in new places.)

"Hello," Gem responded.

"Oh! Hi!" Destiny had expected Snow. It was a good thing that she hadn't gone in for a hug.

"Come in, Snow's in the kitchen."

Destiny hesitantly stepped over the threshold.

"Careful, we--still have a lot of boxes."

"Okay!" She heard the floorboards creak and figured that Gem was showing her the way to the kitchen. She cautiously followed behind, her cane definitely smacking into a bunch of boxes. They must be in a hallway...

"Here." Gem touched her elbow briefly and Destiny turned on instinct as the light brightened slightly--indicating another doorway from the darker hallway.

Destiny was very nervous as she approached Mrs. de Vil's house.

So far, there had been no utterance, no whisper about her having saved the other woman. She was grateful for that, because even though her mother had interrogated her, Destiny had denied it and denied it. It felt horrible to lie to her mother but she didn't want to stress her out. She had already done that enough.

Despite her aching limbs and lingering dizziness, Destiny baked some light, fluffy lemon squares to bring to Mrs. de Vil as a thank you for her discretion, and to check in to make sure the older woman was really alright. Destiny had never healed someone so thoroughly from such intense wounds. She was surprised she'd been able to do it.

She sported her own stitches and bandages still from several cuts and bruises. The butler let her in and guided her to the sitting room, the same one Destiny had been at that fateful day before prom. That felt so long ago now.
