@it-will-be-okay-love
you have time. you have time to figure out what you want. you have time to figure out who you are. we are all constantly evolving, just make sure you are evolving into the favorite version of yourself. you have time to make your life more beautiful. and while youāre working on things, be nice to yourself and others. there is time. you have time. use it well.
having to come to terms with the fact that love is not an everlasting performance in which you attempt to retain the attention of your significant other but rather a release of control and putting faith into them and trusting them to choose to stay with you no matter what you have to offer
to love and be loved is to rest
A lot of people ask me what my biggest fear is, or what scares me most. And I know they expect an answer like heights, or closed spaces, or people dressed like animals, but how do I tell them that when I was 17 I took a class called Relationships For Life and I learned that most people fall out of love for the same reasons they fell in it. That their loverās once endearing stubbornness has now become refusal to compromise and their one track mind is now immaturity and their bad habits that you once adored is now money down the drain. Their spontaneity becomes reckless and irresponsible and their feet up on your dash is no longer sexy, just another distraction in your busy life. Nothing saddens and scares me like the thought that I can become ugly to someone who once thought all the stars were in my eyes.
this fucks me up every single time
I never expected this to be my most popular poem out of the hundreds Iāve written. I was extremely bitter and sad when I wrote this and I left out the most beautiful part of that class.
After my teacher introduced us to this theory, she asked us, āis love a feeling? Or is it a choice?ā We were all a bunch of teenagers. Naturally we said it was a feeling. She said that if we clung to that belief, weād never have a lasting relationship of any sort.
She made us interview a dozen adults who were or had been married and we asked them about their marriages and why it lasted or why it failed. At the end, I asked every single person if love was an emotion or a choice.
Everybody said that it was a choice. It was a conscious commitment. It was something you choose to make work every day with a person who has chosen the same thing. They all said that at one point in their marriage, the āfeeling of loveā had vanished or faded and they werenāt happy. They said feelings are always changing and you cannot build something that will last on such a shaky foundation.
The married ones said that when things were bad, they chose to open the communication, chose to identify what broke and how to fix it, and chose to recreate something worth falling in love with.
The divorced ones said they chose to walk away.
Ever since that class, since that project, I never looked at relationships the same way. I understood why arranged marriages were successful. I discovered the difference in feelings and commitments. Iāve never gone for the person who makes my heart flutter or my head spin. Iāve chosen the people who were committed to choosing me, dedicated to finding something to adore even on the ugliest days.
I no longer fear the day someone who swore I was their universe can no longer see the stars in my eyes as long as they still choose to look until they find them again.
This is so fucking important and I think itās something I needed right now
I donāt know what we did to deserve Mr. Rogers but Iām so glad we had him.Ā
h e l p Iām experiencing an (1) emotions
Learn to articulate how you're feeling without accusing anyone of having bad intentions. You can say "I'm afraid of being alone" without saying "you're just going to leave me like everyone else." You can say "I need some reassurance" without saying "you probably don't love me anymore." You can say "I'm afraid I've hurt your feelings and I'd like to talk it through" without saying "you don't even like me anymore." You can say "I want to spend more time with you" without saying "you've gotten tired of me." You can say "I feel misunderstood" without saying "you always judge me." Try not to let your emotions get the best of you. Have a conversation focused on finding solutions instead of escalating the conflict.
Fall in love with the world around you. Fall in love with the sound of birds, with thunderstorms, with the little flowers that grow against odds in random places. Fall in love with the people and places you can build a home in.
sometimes when iām struggling w/ self-care i remind myself that i am, at my most basic, a hamster in an enclosure.
i need food & water & a safe environment
i need enrichment & the right level of stimuli. i get exhausted if exposed to too much stress & handling.Ā
i am a being with needs, and i deserve to have those needs met, by a responsible and loving caregiver. i just happen to also be that caregiver.Ā
when i think about it like that, itās easier somehow
a big part of being happy is being excited. be excited for everything - making a cup of tea, decorating your future apartment, seeing a friend again, falling in love unexpectedly, the next episode of a show you like, finishing something stressful,Ā buying something youāve been saving up for, a new album, sunsets, traveling, road trips,Ā and the feeling of going to bed after a long day. think of something to be excited about and daydream about it often when youāre sad.
Petition to change the word 'calories' into 'happy points'
Watching people⦠use their mental health⦠get out of/ away with things⦠makes me so..
āYouāre not supposed to say anything negative about me/tell me the truth/disagree with me because Iām mentally ill and itās not right. Youāre supposed to be on my side always and if you dare be against me you donāt care about mental health!ā
My art teacher in grade 8 had ADHD and was Bipolar on top of that and on the first day of class the first thing he told us was that sometimes he would yell at us without really meaning to. And he told us that if it ever happened to call him out because his mental illness didnāt give him the excuse to treat us like shit.
Mental health issues (as well as some other disabilities) EXPLAIN your behavior, but it doesnāt EXCUSE your behavior.
Friendly reminder that 1200 calories is the recommended amount for a 5 year old
this hit me.
another fact is that 500 calories isnāt even enough for a new born.
why did I go so long convinced that going over 500 in a day was the end of the world?
Another friendly reminder that the United States used 1,000 calorie diets as torture for political prisoners and justified it using the diet industry.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/17/bush-torture-memos-commer_n_188190.html
In a footnote to a May 10, 2005, memorandum from the Office of Legal Council, the Bush attorney generalās office argued that restricting the caloric intake of terrorist suspects to 1000 calories a day was medically safe because people in the United States were dieting along those lines voluntarily.
āWhile detainees subject to dietary manipulation are obviously situated differently from individuals who voluntarily engage in commercial weight-loss programs, we note that widely available commercial weight-loss programs in the United States employ diets of 1000 kcal/day for sustain periods of weeks or longer without requiring medical supervision,ā read the footnote. āWhile we do not equate commercial weight loss programs and this interrogation technique, the fact that these calorie levels are used in the weight-loss programs, in our view, is instructive in evaluating the medical safety of the interrogation technique.ā
Another another friendly reminder that the Minnesota Starvation Experiment subjected adult men who were VOLUNTEERS to 1,560 calorie diets and the psychological effects were so profound that one volunteer cut three of his own fingers off and could not remember why.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota_Starvation_Experiment
These men were volunteersĀ who knew exactly what they would be going through and when it would end, and who believed they were doing it for a good and moral reason (the research was used to help rehabilitate victims of starvation and famine at the end of WWII).
And these are the things we are expected to engage in FOREVER to stay at aĀ āhealthyā weight.
Reading about the Minnesota Starvation experiment was my wake-up call. Ā It was what kicked me out of my eating disorder. Ā The guy missing three fingers, whatever his name was, he was the last straw for me.
Scared me so fucking bad I stopped restricting my food that day, and never went back to it.
Just bringinā this back around like I sometimes do.
Wow. This really hit me hard.
EAT
Fun factā calorie restriction exacerbates symptoms of pretty much *every* mental illness.
Anorexia has ~16% mortality rate, slightly higher than acted upon suicidal ideation. Itās more lethal than actively trying to kill oneself and this is why.
Brew a pot of coffee, pour it into the blender, add honey, cinnamon and nutmeg (and a little bit of clove if you have it), your favorite non-dairy milk, and a couple of tablespoons of canned pumpkin. (US grocery stores have it year-round. Itās in with the canned vegetables.) Blend till foam forms on top. Pour into a mug and sip.
500 times better than Starbucks pumpkin spice, plus it has nutrients, plus you donāt have to wait for Starbucks to release anything, plus itās vegan,* plus you donāt have to go to a coffee shop in a pandemic
*donāt @ me about whether honey is vegan. Honeybees are better compensated for their labor than baristas
eta:
unpopular opinion: mental illness can make people behave in extremely toxic and sometimes even abusive or manipulative ways. relationships and friendships with mentally ill people can be extremely difficult, unpleasant, or even harmful. though this may not be intentional and i have sympathy for those who struggle with this, other people are allowed to remove themselves from your life for their own happiness and sanity. they are not bad people for this. the idea that someone *has* to stay with you while you heal or help fix you is wrong, people are allowed to prioritise themselves. itās on you to seek therapy and heal. being mentally ill doesnāt give you a pass to behave in toxic ways and hurt others.
You gotta have a planā¦
This is the mist motivational and inspiring thing Iāve seen all goddamn week
This is incredible.
Rational thought is Gandalf and I love this
