The Empowerment Project

The Empowerment Project (TEP) works towards female positivity, feminism, and gender equality. It explores the narratives of women through discussion and devised theatre. The goal is to raise awareness and educate others about the ongoing oppression of women -- from micro-aggressions to major societal issues -- and how it intersects with other demographics. We hope to continue the discussion by sharing individual ideas, stories, and images with you, in addition to posting updates on our latest ventures. Feminism is having a wardrobe malfunction.

Does your brand of feminism remove barriers for women, or simply move them around? Does is expand options for women, or does it just shift them? You don’t liberate women by forcing them to choose option B instead of option A. What is comfortable for you might not be comfortable for someone else, and it’s entirely possible that what you see as oppressive, other women find comfortable or even downright liberating.

Before you think the girl in the middle is a strawman, let me tell you I used to be her, back in my misguided youth. I considered myself the standard to which other people should adhere. But that was stupid. It’s not up to me to tell people how to dress, and it’s much nicer to let everyone choose for themselves.

Some women would feel naked without a veil. Some women would find it restrictive. Some women would feel restricted by a bra. Some women would feel naked without one. Some women would feel restricted by a tight corset. Others love them. Some wear lots of clothes with a corset. Some only wear the corset and nothing else. What makes any article of clothing oppressive is someone forcing you to wear it. And it’s just as oppressive to force someone not to wear something that they want to wear.

Dean of Students, Fidel Trujillo at New Mexico Highlands University made a sexual assault/rape and domestic violence victim delete a recording of a witness testifying to a prostitution ring operating on campus. The ring was run by the football players who were accused of gang rape in 2011, so the Dean obviously wants to silence her before this reaches the public. She was kicked off of campus after the men accused her of “harassing” them and “exposing them to public hatred” by telling other women what happened and to be careful of them. Luckily, she had the video backed up. The university is not doing anything about it so she needs her voice to be heard elsewhere. Please reblog this video to show what exactly the university is trying to cover up. If more people help spread this around the internet, eventually something will get done.
