#Repost @binge.recovery.dietitian with @get_repost ・・・ We are all social creatures and as a species, humans evolved to depend upon one another for basic survival needs, as well as optimal psychological and physical wellbeing. In short, we like belonging to a group and feeling well-accepted by others. Now can you imagine being in an environment where this sense of belonging is uncertain or threatened? That’s what discrimination creates. Social rejection, and even the fear of rejection triggers the stress response (like those sweaty palms you got when you spoke publically for the first time). We now know that chronic stress places people at greater risk for inflammation and chronic disease. And this is partially how fat stigma contributes to the some of the health risks attributed to “obesity”. The effects of weight stigma don’t affect everyone equally. Individual personality factors and social support can help mitigate its negative influences. But I believe that as a society, we have a responsibility to ensure a healthy, supportive environment for everyone—and that means addressing discrimination on the basis of weight. The sooner we see weight stigma, the sooner we will get to live free from its influence. So let’s chat: do you believe that fat stigma is a concern?
