Buried in ice (part 3)
Jim Walters (Chilling Devotion) x GN!reader
Word count: 2,2k
Summary: Your leg is broken from your previous fall and you can barely move. Hope is slipping from underneath your fingertips.
TW: unhealthy and toxic, obsessive relationship, stalking, manipulation, kidnapping, drugging, starvation, typical yendere stuff
Author note: Last part of Buried in ice and Buried in ice pary 2 requested by @cutecat2005 ! Had a lot of fun with the dialogues in this, even though the subject is a lot darker than in the previous ones
2. The bad ending continuation
The hours stretched as you laid in bed, might as well been dead. The freezing chill still howled outside, keeping you trapped more than in one way. That was your worst fear, your inability has made you a stable prisoner.
You gazed down upon your bandaged leg, broken and currently resting on a pillow. Hope has left you days ago when you realized no help was coming, either medical or freeing one. You were on your own with no one else but Jim, the pain rendering you practically paralized. Your stomach flipped at the though of ever finding comfort in him or this place.
The doors opened. The sound of them was everpresent, constant, and the only thing really changing around you in the stagnant air. Jim has came to check on you once more.
"My love," his voice was above a whisper. "How are you?" eyes narrow, wearing an inviting smile that didn't match them.
Not answering, you glared back. Scared and enraged. How could he do this to you? How can his conscience let him keep you here, like this, in such a state? Doesn't he know, that if you love someone, you should be able let them go, for better or for worse? Even if that meant never seeing them again. But that way you'd win, you'd be free and he would be heartbroken and lonely. Did your inprisonment stem all from his mere selfishness?
"I brough you some soup." he held out the bowl in his hands. Yours were fine but he insisted on feeding you himself, as if you were unable to. As if your arm was broken instead.
Leaning forward a bit unwillingly, he placed a pillow behind your neck, positioning you into a somewhat of a sit.
He held out the spoon, placing it into your mouth. Your teeth clanked around the metal, showing him that if he came any closer, you'd bit him. Biting the hand that feeds you was never a good idea, but what else did you had to lose? Would he break more of your bones? Would he trap you here even more than you already were?
But that was no solution, was it? Just prolonging what was already happening.
All the question swirling in your head were making you sick.
He took out the spoon, all happy. The warm liquid tasting salty, with a bitter aftertaste, slid down your throat. Everything here had a bitter aftertaste. You'd lose your appetite and wouldn't eat if you didn't neccessary have to.
The feeding continued on for quite a while, the man feeling ecstatic everytime he brought the utencil to your face, everytime you swallowed down. As if his only life purpous was to take care of you. And he knew there was no real way for you to escape. For the next months you'd have to be bedridden, barely hopping around the cabin at the end of your healing journey, if the leg would even heal at all. You wouldn't even dare to try to escape - you weren't stupid. If you did, it would take a little to no time for him to find you again, to drag you back here again. All you had to do now was to grit your teeth and wait until it was all over, and if that meant you had to count your seconds, you would.
"No. I want to sit." Jim was about to reach the pillow underneath you, when you stopped him, lifting one hand.
With difficulties you positioned yourself even further away from him, barely moving against the sheets.
You've began to wonder if this was the end. If you should even try to put your efforts in.
Your eyes avoided his, silently signaling the end of supper time.
Everytime, you'd feel tired. Everytime. You had your doubts ever since the beginning but it was becoming increasingly more obvious every day. How you'd always become coincidentaly tired after eating. But what was it to him? So he could what? Watch you? Was that the reason he was drugging you?
All you wanted to do was cry, but you didn't wanted him to see you break. Maybe that was what he really wanted.
Falling into another nightmarish rest, you began slipping out of your consciousness unwillingly.
~~~
As the sunlight of the next day caressed your closed eyelids, you started to feel your body once more, gaining control over your movements.
You felt terrified. But you've felt that for so long already, it began to seem as if that was the norm, nothing out of the ordinary for you. How could you let yourself get so lost?
The fear began to tranform into anger. Another too familair emotion.
As if on que, Jim's deep voice called out from behind the closed door. You gritted your teeth as he entered the room, holding another plate. It smelles of eggs and becon
"Actually," an idea flickered in your eyes, "I'm not that hungry."
He halted, his eyebrows drawing together in confusion. He always did listen to your commands, as long as you sat in the same spot, not leaving, not arguing, not refusing his very frequent visits. "Are you sure?" A nervous smile appeared upon his features. He might have already know he was losing both you and this battle, even if you were the one unable to act.
"Yes." you shook your head plainly, not leaving any room for arguments. You were aware of his undying loyalty, the same one that even brought you here in the first place.
"Just leave it." your request left the air tense as you gazed into his cold, icy orbs for the first time in eternity. A defiance. Somethimg he didn't take into account.
His expresion flickered for a second, letting the calm mask slip past his guard with his eyes widening, his jaw flexing under the layer of skin.
With your blunt refusal, he placed the food on your nightstand, noting something unexpected, at least for him. Over the wooden surface was thrown your carved choker he has made you the first time you came around. His first declaration of love, one that you took so close, wearing it wrapped tightly just above your most vulnerable part - your unguarded artery. The small brown animal laid cold, tossed to the side, discarded by the very one it was meant for. The leather cord was, in the same fashion, carelessly thrown over it, not being able to bask in your warmth.
He faced you again, disturbed by your doing. Quickly obscuring his unsure expresion with rolled eyes, he left the room as quick as he could, trying hard to not show how deep this gesture cut him.
You exhaled. That was one way how to undirectly force him away. Looking by your side and at the nightstand, the food dis look appetizing. But you'd just let it be untouched, wouldn't matter how many hours would past, since he'd come to pick up the full place back into kitchen, still pissy and silent.
But every relationship had it's ups and downs, he had to remind himself.
All you could do was scoff at his sentiment. If this was the thing that would finally get him pressed, you should have thrown that thing away weeks ago.
You focused back on your plan and all it's weak spots. You couldn't not eat foreve, no. By the time evening rolled around, you stomach growled across the entire forest. But you had to remember your cause. Your will being stronger than your bodily impulses.
Without the food, your sleep was far worse. Waking at every creak of the old wooden floorboards, exhaustion taking it's toll, leaving you to only hear your heartbeat.
"Is this all about the other day?" the masculine voice cut throught the silence of the darkness like a blade.
He was in your room again, watching you.
This was the first time he actually spoke during his nightly visits. Your eyes opened, you were so taken aback you wondered if you were only imagining things. But it couldn't be. His frame was tall and unmoving, his blonde hair standing out from the walls behind and his clothing. His pale skin shined like the moon, his blue eyes burning holes into yours, almost without blinking. These ciurcumstances definitely made him even more imposing.
You stayed silent, still a bit drowsy, you could not really understand what he was trying to communicate.
"What?" you murmured.
His eyes flickered away, squinting in thin lines. "Why you're not eating... Doing that won't do you any good, you know that right?"
"I'm just not hungry, okay?" you snapped back, too tired and sleep deprived for his little argument. "God forbid I lose an appetite during all of this."
He squinted at you once more, an eternity passing before he came closer, worry painting his face in much more approachable tone, softening his features.
"I just... I don't understand why." he spoke quietly, and in a tone that sounded sincerely. "I never did anything bad. I'm just taking care of you, that's all. If you're refusing to eat, you're just making it more difficult for yourself." he scrached the back of his elbow with his other hand.
Closing your mouth the control your enraged breaths, you thought about an answer.
The man came even closer, sitting besides you on the squeaky mattress. "When I found you on the road I got so scared you wouldn't- "
"What????? What do you mean 'found'?" you barked out, surprising yoirself with the sudden wave of energy. "You mean when you tracked me down? Followed me like some... some fucking animal, you stalker!?"
You wished you could yell at him even more, call him much worse names than just 'stalker'. But the catiousness never left your mind, not even in a heated moment like this.
Jim blinked at you a few times, eyes wide, not moving a muscle, stopping for a few moments to gaze at you in confusion. "What are you talking about??" the pretending made your empty stomach flip. "Are you feeling alright? Sure you didn't hit your head? It did look like a pretty bad fall... "
"No!!! I know what I remember, stop gaslighting me!" you yelled out, more loud than u expected in the quiet of the cabin.
"I am not!" he whisper-yelled, "I just wish things would get back to normal." he added, all tired, more to himself than to you.
'Normal'. What did that word even mean anymore.
"Jim, that is no solution. How can you not see, what you're doing is wrong?" you let out a calmer breath, the first wave of rage slowly washing away like a wave during backwash. You had to keep your calm, keep your facts straight if you wanted to defend yourself here. "You literally made me a prisoner! Do you think this is truly what i wish for? Have you ever even taken it into consideration?"
"Prisoner? Where would you even want to go? Everything is miles away." he said, looking away once more.
"The town, the hospital, god, anywhere!... I just want to go home... " you heard your voice break.
"... this is home." He stood up silently and swiftly, not wishing to entertain this conversation which clearly led nowhere for him. The next look he gave you was full of pity, as if he saw something you didn't.
"Why are you looking at me as if I was crazy?" you spoke defeated.
"I'm not. I just hope you'll get better soon." speaking his heart sincerely, he turned to leave.
"No, Jim, wait!" you called out but it was too late, hearing the door's lock fall into place. As if you were going somewhere.
You couldn't believe he'd lie to you so openly like that. What did he even think of himself?... Or was that really the truth? Your memories were becoming a traumatic mess, difficult labyrinth of foggy thoughts. More and more you didn't kniw what to believe anymore - maybe you did hit your head afterall. But that couldn't be true. You were the only person in the world you could count and depend on, you couldn't let his words get to you. Maybe you were really going crazy.
You were just foo tired. For everything. Folding your hands over your face, you let out a long exhale.
But you weren't the only one plagued with regret. Worrying thoughts began to take root in Jim's own mind, even though he tried his best to adress them.
You were growing weaker everyday, soundless but vengeful. Slowly dissapearing right in front of his eyes, your spark dimming by this place and his actions both. Didn't matter how hard he'd try to feed you, how good the food looked or smelled - you wouldn't budge. All just to show him the reality of his actions. The man knew exactly what you were doing, punishing him for being the way he was, damning your entire relationship and his efforts of making this a home and you two a family. A real family. But if you could be stubborn, so could he. He wasn't cruel, he never was. He just loved you beyond any reason, completely captivated, losing his mind in the process.
So even if you withered away like a flower, you'd do so under his hand.
TW: unhealthy and toxic, obsessive relationship, stalking, fighting/violence, blood, choking, chasing, manipulation, kidnapping, typical yendere stuff
Author note: Part 2 of Buried in ice, requested by @cutecat2005 This one is a bit shorer and also a bit darker than the previous chapter, but i hope i did it justiceee
1. The good ending
As the doors swung open you could only hold your breath. Gripping the handle of the phone, you prepared yourself to lunge at anyone of threat, didn't matter who it was.
But who came through the door suprised you.
A man somewhere in his 50s, thick beard and broad frame, his eyes flickered with unexpected panic at your presence. Scanning him as he stood there frozen, clearly startled. The first thing you noticed besides his unfamilair face was the uniform - clearly a forest ranger, the badge proudly sat at his shoulder, his hat on his head. The owner of this place maybe.
You watched his eyes quietly. How he saw the dirt and filth, muddying your clothes, your messy hair and the eyebags decorating your face. You did look horrible.
Still a stranger nontheless, but he didn't seem hostile. A sliver of hope took root inside you.
"Who are you?" his thunderous voice shook the walls of the cabin. "Are you alright??" Seeing that maybe you didn't have a home, that you might have been sick or starved, and that in this state you'd definitely wouldn't survive the cold world on your own, he took a step closer.
"Um," your own tone came out a raspy whisper. Clearing your throat with haste, you tried giving a proper reply, holding up your hands in a defensive, docile gesture, "I'm sorry for breaking in. I just- I- I need help. Please... ?"
The man let out a nervous exhale and closed the door behind him, cutting off the uncomfortable chilly breeze.
"Alright, then." he said cautiously, recalculating this situation, "Let's- Let's calm down. What is the matter?"
You weren't sure how much you wanted to tell this man, but seeing as he had the meaning to help you, you wondered how much of a choice you really had. To gain the trust, you had to say at least the bigger, more important, truthful parts.
And so you did. Trying to tell your entire tale of how you got here as quickly and neatly as possible, so it would give proper sense to any outsider looking in, which at this moment, was this man. It took you quite a while too. You got so passionate and emotional, you basically poured your heart out. Telling him about your struggles and sorrows that weighted you down these past weeks felt quite nice. You caught yourself feeling relief to finally let out all of what's been bothering you, like a dam breaking and flooding the entire world. Now that you felt at least a bit more safe with another living person around, the man listened and nodded along, even going as far as to make a quick cup of coffee to sip on while watching your distress.
At the end of your story, revisiting your unfortunate events, he didn't seem to have any words to offer, looking at you a bit blank and horrified. "Well, Jesus Christ almighty, that's one way how to run off."
"Okay." He put down his cup with a clank, now seated on a chair by the dining table. "Here's what we can do next."
You looked at the ranger with big eyes, slightly shuffling in your spot.
"I can drive you to the nearest town and you can file a police report if you'd like. You'd be safe there, alright? You can even call your family or friends or whoever to come pick you up. If not, I'm sure the local motels are all open 24/7. How does that sound?"
Wondering about his offer, there was really only one way to reply. You didn't want to go on your own, and if he was offering all this, how could you object?
"That would be great. Thanks a lot, really," you smiled wide, a bit tired after evedything that's happened, "I don't know what I would do otherwise."
"Oh, no worries. You'll be fine." he gave a heartfelt smile, his mustache curling upwards.
As you two entered his car, your head was full of thoughts, as it usually was. You sat at the front, letting the nature pass you by, the road enveloped in beautiful but deadly landscape. You wouldn't forget your history with this place, feeling relief of finally leaving, of finally having the shakles which bounded here broken. Finally, you were free. Mesmerized and satisfied, you let your eyelids close by the rhytmic sounds of the car, safely on your way home.
2. The bad ending
As the doors swung open you could only hold your breath. Gripping the handle of the phone, you prepared yourself to lunge at anyone of threat, didn't matter who it was.
You could hear your heart in your ears, it's pace quickening with each passing beat as the figure reavealed yourself. The sliver of hope you held so close, the proudness of your succesful escape you felt just a minutes ago, the relaxation you felt - it all died like a candle being blown out. You could feel how you started to shake under his gaze. Jim found you.
But you wouldn't go down so easily, you wouldn't let him take you back.
Before he could even step a bit closer, before he could do or say anything, you jumped at him, shoving him to on his back as the both of you tumbled down across the threshold. Here, at top of him, you didn't give him a chance to react as you striked the side of his head with the old phone handle. Breaking his skin barrier, the warm droplet of blood began rolling it's way down the man's forehead. His face twisted in both pain and betreyal. His scarf bunched at the bottom of his neck, reavealing his expresion. This was the most emotional you ever saw him.
All this energy surprised you. All the pent up rage, the sadness, the fatigue. You couldn't forgive him. He trapped you at that house and now he tracked you down across the entire forest. You regretted ever stepping a foot into this area a long time ago, the day the snowstorm caught you by surprise. So now, you weren't a violent person, you never were, but this moment felt justifiable, because why would he even be here? What were his intentions?
Not wasting another minute, you circled your hands around his neck, closing them around tightly. Wishing you had a belt or something stronger than just your grip.
You had enough! You just wanted to go home... Was that so horrible to ask for? For him to finally leave you alone?
Jim's hands wrapped around your shoulders when he flipped you both at the floor with a loud thud as you landed on your spine, with him abruptly overpowering you, switching his fingers to your own, releasing his neck. He pinned them above your head, looking more lost than you when he spoke your name.
"What have you done... ? What are you doing???" his voice was desperate and frantic. Despite everything, he wasn't going to hurt you.
"Why did you do this?? Why did you leave??? Were you unhappy back home? You should have just told me, I-I thought I was giving you everything you needed... Why?" his rambling was quick, quiet and interrupted by his deep, heavy breaths.
You wiggled one of your hands from underneath, reaching the phone handle by your side just like before, not wasting another second at his question when you hit the same spot on his head as before with a grunt, throwing him to the side and off of you. You didn't wish for any of his interrogating questions. This conflict could have been so avoided would he just let you be. Standing up as fast as you could, you didn't look back as you began sprinting away, didn't matter which way. The snow crunched undedneath you as you made your way down the main road.
You panted, tired and at the brink of tears.
Not even knowing what was happening around, all you knew you had to do was run. You didn't care about the ice under your soles, slippery and dangerous, or the wheezing arctic wind, whipping your face red. Hearing Jim's voice behind you before you lost him completely. You couldn't run forever, you knew that. Even if you could he'd just find you again. And again. And again.
There was a stubborn, quiet maddness to him. You hated how it took you this long to realize, especially now, when you were so close to freedom.
You didn't even realized when your body gave up. The exhausting catching up to you before you could reach the nearby town. Displayed across the road, your face down, you mind not present. But even unconscious, you knew you were in danger. Last thing you remembered before drifting off fully was the man. Placing his hands under your back and knees, he pulled you closer, rocking your limp body gently when taking you home in his arms. His worried voice, full of soft promises and coos, giving you his most truthful word to take care of you for the rest of your life, now with even more caution than before. How he'll never let this happen again, how he'll keep his eyes on you every minute, every second, he'll makes sure of that. There, in that moment, your days have been sealed forever. Or maybe they were already sealed long before.
~~~
You woke up.
Fluttering, your eyes adjusting to the dimly lit room.
The familiarity of this place made you tear up in rage. Your room. You were back in your room. With your bag under the bed, the curtains lightly covering the white land behind the window, the picture of the black wolf still hang on the wall. The stagnant air flowed into your lungs.
This place. This damned cabin you'll never escape.
Despite your protests, your tired body could barely move. Brused from the moment you passed out, you hissed when you touched a particularly sore spot on your head.
When the door to your room opened again, you wished the floor would swallow you whole right then and there. You wished for a miracle that would show you that you weren't indeed back. Maybe you even wished Jim was someone else, suddely coming in to rescue you, to help you. But deep down you knew nothing if this sort was happening, even if hope dies last, there was nothing of it left for you.
The man stood over you with an unusual, bashful smile, clearly pleased. In one hand, he held his cup, in the other yours. Steam curled upwards when he placed it beside you, on your nightstand.
"You're finally awake. Hope you slept well, that fall seemed pretty rough." he spoke with inviting, quiet voice, strangely eerie in this still, cold, small wooden room.
He took a long sip out of his tea, dreamily watching it's surface.
"Um," starting a sentence again, he said your name like a question, slightly shaking his head, almost as if to get rid of a bad thought. Then he raised his gaze again, meeting yours - it send a chill down your spine. "Let's not do that again, hm?"
Buried in ice
Jim Walters (Chilling Devotion) x GN!reader
Word count: 4,3k
Summary: There was something wrong with that place, you couldn't put your finger on what it was, but it's presence was strong. You had to escape. No matter what. You've been planning this for weeks and only the circumstances will show if you'll really be succesful.
TW: unhealthy and toxic, obsessive relationship
Author note: Requested by the super awesome @cutecat2005 !! I also remembering getting a request in the past for part 2 of Misery loves company but it was around the time I lost my last account and all of my motivation. I can't find anon but I hope this could be a sort of offer as these fics could be a bit similar in some aspects. Also I watched Obsession it was soo good, i got a bit inspired x
Everytime you thought you were alone - you weren't. At every corner, at every crevice of this place, you couldn't have privacy. Couldn't afford to be left just by yourself or your thoughts. The unsettling chill which ran down your spine seemed to loom over you like the moon over the night sky at each of your steps.
How far did your freedom stretch? And how far were you willing to go for the answers?
The emptiness of your ceramic cup was daunting. Your hands clutched tightly around the painted sides, with the previous drink nowhere to be found, it's warmth long gone. At the bottom, you could see your reflection staring back at you, especially your eyes, more tired and unhappy than they have ever been.
You couldn't bare it anymore.
This wasn't the first time you felt unease, wondering if your supposed beloved was drugging you or not. The food tasted strange from time to time, always leaving you weary. Surely by this time, by the amount of days spent between you two, alone, you'd know his intentions, objectives or even beliefs. Yet Jim Walters was seemingly a closed book, unreadable, written in language long forgotten in time. His pages were all torn and burnt, forever lost somewhere under the layers of ice. It was all too much and your patience wasn't endless. You weren't a monster for wanting something more than all of this.
Yes, you knew him, his personality, his habits, but could that even count? What was his past? Why did he live here? And what was your role supposed to be?
The time spent away from the outer world, the civilisation was enough to set you two into a steady everyday rhytm. Something normal couples did. Jim cooked, cleaned, showed affection. He wouldn't fight - he'd avoid you when frustrated, retreating into hinself and taking his anger out on some poor tree with his axe. It was almost domestic at times. Overall, it really wasn't like you had a bad life here. But it wasn't yours. Not one that you willingly chose, at least. You stumbled into this lifestyle with a layer of powerlessness hanging over your head. Sure, your ciurcumstances might have been way worse, whether it was fate or some twisted coincidence, you were now trapped here, behind thick wooden walls, damned long before he'd even reach you, long before you stepped your foot over the threshold of this house, long before you even really knew what was happening.
Yet, you remained calm.
The same cup that just made you ponder your situation was suddenly being taken away. The man's own hand gently wrapped around yours, offering you a small smile when your eyes met. He stood up from his seat at the table, took the dirty dishes into the sink, giving it no thought whatsoever. For him it was just a normal morning.
"Tired?" his question cut through the silence.
"...Yea." you closed your eyes, shaking your head slightly, your own polite smile appearing, "Couldn't really sleep much."
"Hmm." Jim simply nodded in understandment, the sound of running water began filling the tiny cozy room. He never was much for talking.
To say you couldn't sleep was an understatement. Nightmares have been plaguing your mind ever since your first night here. This certianly wasn't the first time you felt a bit drowsy. Sometimes it almost felt paranormal. Unnantural.
You watched the man for a few seconds, stood up and walked closed with a yawn, hoping the motion would get more blood pupming through your tired body, "What's the plan for today? I was thinking about making lunch. Rabbit with roasted potatoes - how does that sound?" Your sudden question rendered the man silent.
Jim's brow quirked up. He was the one who usually did the cooking, especially bigger, more fancier meals like this. Your cooking abilities were limited anyways, the kitchen still feeling a whole lot distant and unfamiliar.
"What's the occasion?"
"Nothing," your corners of mouth itched upwards, convincing and disarming enough to confuse even the most stubborn of minds. "I just though we could spent some time together, that's all."
If his hands weren't wet, he'd wrap them tightly around your waist and pull you closer, your simple request already warming his heart. He scanned your frame with his icy blue gaze before his shoulders slumped in defeat - he couldn't deny you anything. Not when you looked at him like that.
"I saw this one receipt in the cook book!" Leaning slightly against the counter you watched him work. "Wait, you know what? Let me just get it." you waved your hand casually and dismissively instead of explaining it, already turning around to reach the small library while Jim's focus was still occupied by the contents of the kitchen sink. You didn't even hear his reply (if he even said any) when you knelt down by the shelf, pretending to look for the object you mentioned. Instead, you grabbed his diary. You knew you shouldn't look through it, that's why you dared to do so right in front of him. It would be sly and ridiculous. Forced by your ciurcumstances, you had already carefully learned how to navigate the mine field just out in the open, in plain sight. With your back facing him, you quickly skimmed across the pages.
If you wanted to be succesful, you had to tread carefully. You've been planning this for weeks. Slowly getting ready, step by step when he wasn't suspecting, looking, paying attention. His routines were familiar like the palm of your hand, his things were like your own. You knew when he went to sleep, when he was waking up with the brink of mornings. Still, you had doubts. Would it even be possible to succesfully escape?
There. You found the page your were looking for. It was a map Jim drew a long time ago, showing the cabin, the nature around and the best places for hunting or setting down traps. It was a simple sketch, definitely not professional looking. The trees were like tiny arrowheads pointing upward, the hunting grounds were marked an X. At the top left was a compass, showing witch way was north. You recognized the road you came by from, and even if it was already so long ago, you knew which way it spiralled down the mountain and away. That was good to know. You held your breath, not forgetting to scan through the areas Jim didn't explore yet. Blank spaces with no scribbles on them, whether he couldn't reach them or just avoided them fully for whatever reason. Your heart pounded deep in your chest but your facade stayed unshaken. The adrenaline rush definitely woke you up from your previous fatigue. A strange way how to start one's morning.
This one glance was already risky enough. Trying to remember as much as possible, you slid the book quietly back, taking the correct one and opening it on the page you intended in one swift motion. You've read it many times, you've been prepared.
"Here, see?" you stood back up, closing the distance over the livingroom with lazy steps, dragging your feet almost nonshalantly.
The water stopped running and Jim wiped his hands, reading the page titled 'Tender rabbit with delicious roasted vegetables and home made parsely dip'.
His brows furrowed. Nearly all of the ingredients used in this recipe weren't located in the kitchen. Most of them were either frozen outside or in the forbidden basement, fully locked out, with him possessing the only key.
He considered it for a moment, yet his eyes remained strong and fixed at the book in his hands.
But why not, he thought. It wasn't like he suspected your planned escape; you haven't given him any reason to doubt you. Yet.
"I... I'll look into it." Looking at you a bit uncertain, but kindness still painted his features, small blush appearing as well.
You just smiled right back.
It didn't take long for him to get ready. His jacket was on, his boots were firmly tied and his scarf obscured the lower half of his face, protecting him from the harsh weather outside. The winter was nearing it's end, but the mountain climate has always been unstable and unpredictable.
There was a high chance you'd have better circumstances running away during spring. You wondered about it many times but, unfortunately, you always came to the same conclusion: you had to escape as soon as possible. You'd rather freeze in the wild than to see your body and will slowly rot away into numbness. Especially now, as you watched him leave from the corner of your eye and through a window, his dark silhuette walking away, dissapearing into the one room you've never been to.
Your pulse quickened, hearing it in your eardrums as you put on your own winter clothing. Letting out a shaky breath, the front doors creaked once more as you stepped out. Your time was very limited - you had to act quick, and preferably keeping your nerves steady.
The snow crunched under your feet, trying hard to not make any more sounds. The basement wasn't far, just a few feet in front of you, but it wasn't the distance or the cold which worried you. Stilling your breath, you gathered all of your courage to peek around the corner, half expecting Jim's eyes to burn holes into yours. Instead you saw his back down the far wall. He was rummaging inside a crate of potatoes, swiftly picking out the most decent looking ones.
Gently, you placed your foot at the first step of the steep stone staircase. It was frozen and old, making it difficult to balance out your quietness and carefulness.
Your goal was to reach the practical pegboard one would normally find in a garden shed. Knifes, axes and other gear was hung there, on big rusty nails, casting a malicious atmophere across the already dark basement. You couldn't see much down there, but you didn't really pay it much mind, it wasn't like you were planning on exploring this place. Curiosity did spark within you from time to time, but this wasn't the situation. Too focused on your task at hand, with caution, you closed the distance over another step, almost slipping. The entire body stilled when Jim's figure perked up. A cold droplet of sweat rolled down your temple, painfully uncomfortable in the cold air. He didn't seem to notice anything though, getting back to work.
Still having a long way to go, you recalculated your situation. Was it even worth it? Sure, you wanted a knife to defend yourself, but maybe you could grab one from the kitchen drawer, even if that was way more obvious.
When suddenly, the man tied the potoato sack in his hands, ready to leave.
You reacted way too quickly. Dashing out, jumping over the icy stairs, desperate to get out of his eyeshot as fast as humanly possible. Rushing over the snow, you tripped. Something moving wrapped around your ankles, dragging you down and filling you with panic. Your maneuvers were rapid, moving your hands towards the feet quicker than your gaze. You could hear Jim's heavy boots acsending the staircase.
Ripping the tangled thing away from your body - not a snake to your own surprise - you held up a loose rope, originally lost under a layer of snow. Unfortunately, you had no time to process anything as you quickly got back up, reaching the door. Immediately upon entering, you slammed to the doors shut, running over to your room, not even caring if the man heard you or not.
Your heart pounded more than ever before. Even despite your short and shallow breaths, you instinctivelly threw down your jacket and the forgotten rope, locking them both into your closet. The snow stuck at your soles, leaving small puddles underneath. Fear, anger and regret all swirled inside your head like storm clouds, waiting for the worst to happen. You shouldn't have gone there. Jim was going to find out, he was going to lock you here forever, he was going to never trust you again and you'll never escape...
A knock on your door announced the man's presence.
He called out your name but it felt so distant, as if he wasn't even really speaking to you. More so, as if he was only addresing your body, but your mind wasn't responding. You were too absent minded and shaken with fear to even really reply.
His face, followed by his long blonde hair, appeared in the doorframe. First, he quickly scanned the room, his eyes merely darting towards every corner before settling on you, looking for anything out of the ordinary. Secondly, he stayed quiet. Just watching and wondering. You knew he wasn't stupid. He wasn't ignorant either. There was no way he wasn't going to question you.
"Were you... outside?"
"What?" you spoke, more choked than you expected.
"I mean, right now. Were you outside right now?" there wasn't that much urgency in his low voice but his stillness still creeped you out. It always did, how observant, noiseless and non-confrontational he was.
Now, you had two options. Tell the truth and face the consequences, or lie.
Your voice came out a hushed whisper.
"No."
Shaking your head ever so slightly, you cursed yourself. There was no way he was going to believe you.
You could feel the rest of his body tensly linger behind the doorstep, not moving a muscle, leaving you wondering if he was going to barge in at any second.
"I was just taking a nap." you rubbed your eye unconvincingly, "But I'm not really sleepy anymore... Are you hungry? We can go make that lunch, if that's what you want?" trying to stir the conversation elsewhere, voice sweet as honey, you couldn't miss how Jim slightly jolted at your words. ...if that's what you want...
This didn't really earn a reply. Instead, he continued on waiting, keeping quiet. His eyes skimming the room once more, slightly squinting when they met yours. Without another word, he left just as quickly as he arrived, his head dissapearing into the hall. You weren't sure if that was a good thing or not, but no matter what, you still let out a deep breath. Stilling your heartbeat, you stood up on wobbly legs. It was time to face the situation you created.
Your partner was in the kitchen, as you suspected. Not really sure if he was giving you the silent treatment, his hands moved steady to bring out all the pans and platters. His fixed look was so uninviting, as if saying how he'll manage this cooking alone, by himself.
And he did. Jim did most of the things, with you often having to move out of his way. He worked affectively and swiftly, following the recipe and making the entire dish in no time. His innner anger or upset or whatever it was slowly faded away, leaving you both squashed under uncomfortable silence. Even if both of you maybe should have apologized, you were almost glad he didn't persue more questions about your short outside venture. Once you were done, watching the rabbit cook in the old oven, you slipped the unguarded kitchen knife into your pocket, careful enough not to draw blood. That was rather smooth, at least smoother than your earlier attempt. Your cheeks still reddened at the fresh memory. Even offering to clean up to cover your suspicious tracks. But despite all that you were sure the man was going to watch you way more carefully now, his eyes set on you with each and every one of your moves.
Dinner was no more no less the same. The same quiet eating, the same tense air filling the room. The food was good but still left a strange aftertaste on your tongue.
You returned back to your room, your head full of thoughgs, exhaused, not really by the activity, but by the nerve wracking stares given by the man. The constant tiptoeing you had to do around him, like you were dancing on the thinnest ice imaginable.
Slumping back at your sheets, you wished to bury right in. But you couldn't.
Another alarming though flashed through your mind. With haste, you slid down at the floor, pulling out your bag from underneath the bed. You had to be prepared. And you had to pack everything necessary now.
~~~
Night creeped around the corner but you couldn't sleep. Your eyelids were heavy but the paranoia kept you wide awake and alert. But not only that.
You knew Jim tended to check on you at night, for whatever reason, but tonight, he checked on you three times already. You also knew the mountains were dangerous, even more so at dark but you had no other choice. You already walked a thin line when it came to this entire plan, stealing equipment, acting all weird.
Evedytime you felt his presence you knew he wasn't just looking if you were sleeping. His stares loitered; he was making sure you weren't running away.
At around 2AM your door creaked open once more. Feeling Jim's eyes bore into your shoulders, an uncomfortable shiver ran down your spine.
Not a few minutes later, the door closed again. Entire minutes. Spent tense under his stare. The squeaking of the floorboards was loud against the still, lonely walls as he walked away. Hopefully, the air was clear now, but you still had to wait another few minutes for the man to fall asleep.
He's grown suspicious. You knew that he knew, which only made you more sure about your desicion. There was no going back now.
Swinging the bag over your shoulders, you were ready to go.
You didn't even had to try to bother to open the door, already suspecting it would be locked. As if that could stop you.
Climbing through the window you kept quiet, moving as slow and stealthy as possible. Conflicting feelings bottled up inside you, trying hard to supress them as you looked around the empty, cold cabin. The same cabin you've spent an important part of your life in these last few months in. It didn't matter now - you had to go. Even if a small part of your being longed to stay here, you knew it wasn't what you truly wished for. And you were sure this place could have grown on you more over time, if you'd maybe given it a sliver of a chance. But if it was truly meant to be, you'd know where to find it again, to find your way back again. You'd know how to return. But for now, you had to make this completely radical choice for yourself and leave, tear away the ribbons which tied you to this forgotten piece of land.
You didn't look back as you began walking, faster than usual, picking up your pace until you caught yourself sprinting away with all your might. The side of the hill was steep as you entered the denser part of the forest, going off road, sure to not be tracked by your footprints, your muscles still moving quick.
You weren't sure how far you've gotten when your legs began to cramp up and your throat began to close. You gasped for the icy air around, finally allowing yourself a small break. It was still dark and you weren't really sure how good of a idea it was to camp. The only company were the tall pine trees and the everpresent frozen landscape.
Taking out the rope from your bag, you tied a bigger rock around one end, using it as a sort of makeshift grappling hook. You weren't exactly the most athletic person so this mechanism quite helped when climbing up the nearest tree.
At the top of one branch you positioned yourself carefully, tying yourself tightly against the bark. It was rather high. Normally, you wouldn't even think about climbing something like this so casually, but it was almost scary how far could certain ciurcumstances push a person. And part of you couldn't even believe this was really your reality, not a dream, not a game, not a piece of fiction.
After what felt like forever, you finally let yourself relax and even close your eyes a bit.
~~~
You've been woken up before the sun could even reach the summits. Frigidness wrapped around you like a blanket, sitting on the land, the trees and your reddened face. The trilling of birds echoed across the treetops, as you looked around, realizing what was happening. The memories came flooding back undone. In the awakening light of the morning it all felt unreal. Were you really able to do all that?
For a few minutes you just sat there, taking in the view and your circumstances, as well as listening for any passersby. Your body was stiff and sore but your courage burned inside your chest, keeping you warm. If you had to admit, you were a bit proud of yourself. Even though the fight was not over yet, the most difficult part was done for now.
Your life just shifted. Something in you just shifted. And you had a feeling this was a slow beggining of some better days.
With newfound determination you slid down the tree, packing your rope up.
Now that the sunrise slowly began to lit your way, you tried noticing anything resembling a path but to no awail. You weren't sure if that was a good thing or not; at one hand you wanted to reach civilisation as quick as possible, at the other, walking along a well known trail could be dangerous for you. But really, everything you did so far was dangerous.
All signals pointed towards how this part of the forest was barely explored and completely unhabitted. But what was a few more miles to reach your goals? You were so close, you just had to keep on going, even if you weren't that well rested.
The nature could be enchanting. One of the few things keeping you somewhat alert as the hours slipped through your fingers like water, but you didn't really mind. You were too deep in your thoughts, too focused to care about the minutes. Even better, the more time passed, the more of a distance you built between you and that damn hut.
Your body suddenly froze, the hair on your back stood up straight, as if your sixth sense activated, as if your intuition suddenly kicked in. There wasn't anything out of the usual, but the air felt tighter, more dense. It was a strange feeling - you didn't know what it was, your eyes couldn't recognize any dangers. Maybe it was the uncanny, eerie quiet, abruptly not accompanied by any sounds of nature, but you frantically looked around nontheless.
Then you spotted it. The walls of a house.
At first, a wave of panic washed over you. Were you back at the cabin? Have you gotten that lost? Trying to remember Jim's map correctly was a bit difficult now; what if you went the wrong way? Towards the wrong direction? Navigating through unknown area, especially at night, was a risk you knew you were taking.
There was no way. There couldn't to be. It's been hours since you've left. Did you really just circle the entire forest?
You came closer with a hesitant step.
But the closer you came to the wooden structure the less frightened you felt, nervousness leaving your system and certainty building up inside you.
It wasn't until the tall trees and long branches reavealed the entire building, you found yourself standing in front of a ranger's hut.
A possible help.
Catiously, you walked around the building, peeking into the dark windows. No one seemed to be inside. A moment of hesitation was replaced by your quick impulses. With haste, you lunched at the door. Maybe you'd find phone, food or water inside, not to mention the shelter. You were more than sure there was no ranger on Jim's map. Did he know this was here? Didn't matter now, maybe you could even spend the next night here. There was no way you were going to let this opportunity go to waste.
Shaking the door handle vigorously, the lock wouldn't budge.
Quickly, you pulled out the kitchen knife from earlier, trying to pick the lock manually by yourself. The sharp point slid accros the rusty metal unsuccesfully. Maybe forcing it with your entire strenght wasn't a good idea. You focused your hands, cleared your mind and steadied your breathing; it would be better to be slow and precise, even if you were desperate. You twisted and pointed at the doorlock for minutes until you've heard a clear clank where the tiny gears popped into place.
Steadily, you opened the door.
Inside was nothing much to see. Old furniture and decor greeted you right away from the entrance, pulling your gaze deeper into the cabin. You felt a slight relief at the cozy sight, not having to feel the aggresive cold on your skin anymore.
If your ciurcumstances allowed, you'd stay here for a few days. Wait for help or get going once you'd gather all your strenghts.
As your steps echoed through the empty place, you've catiously looked around for kitchen. If you remembered correctly, the main phone line back in Jim's house was also located on the counter, hopefully this place would be similar.
The area was tiny so it wasn't any problem for you. You've reached the small dining area, nicely tidied up, with no food left to spare. Rummaging through the shelves, drawers and the fridge, you've only managed to find some forgotten canned goods. Nothing too apetizing but you still pocketed it nontheless. Looking around the unfamiliar place a bit more, you've noticed the life it radiated. As if it was well lived in, despite no residence being currently inside. The walls were lined with personal memorabilia, cut out and framed newspaper articles or vintage car models. It radiated of time, old interests and love. You've even seen some old bottle of alcohol, wondering if you should steal that as well or not. Overall, the entire interior seemed frozen somewhere in the 90s, and it's energy wasn't stagnant, like back at your old home. It was lively and comfortable, smelling of cinnamon and pine cones.
Maybe you could finally ease up a bit. These past weeks you've been in such a fight or flight mode, you've almost forgotten how to relax. Make a cup of tea, coffee or hot cocoa, try to make something to eat, phone for help and wait. You've told these steps to yourself with your inner voice, finally letting out a long held breath.
The quiet was nice. For the first time in an extended period, you could afford to find the stillness comforting, and you've realized you still had time. The world didn't end yet. You really did escape. You really were successful afterall.
It would be best to look for the phone, you added in your head again.
Allowing yourself to explore this captivating place, you ended up circling back into livingroom - the first room in the house, which could also be considered somewhat of a hall.
Nothing on the floor, notning on the couch, nothing on the cabinets. But once you scanned the nearby coffee table, that's where your eyes caught in place. The phone, old but hopefully functional, stood at the surface alongside with some books and empty vase.
You lounched at it in no time, scrambling to punch the emergency contact into the buttons.
Silence. The only thing which followed. For a second, your heart rate began picking up speed again, but you had to keep your cool. You had to find out what was wrong.
A droplet of sweat ran down your forehead when you picked up the machine and turned it at each side, looking desperately for a mistake, error or just anything that looked out of place. The handle looked fine, so did the cable. You didn't dare to mess with the wires so you left it at that. A sting of hoplesness ran through your being.
You scanned the object once more. The entirety of it. The mistake didn't lay at the phone itself, it just wasn't plugged in. A wave of relief washed over you once you realized, accompanied by a bit of embarassement. You really had to try and ease up. Getting back on your feet, the nearest outlet was just behind one drawer. That wouldn't be a problem, shoving the piece of furniture out of the way, you began shuffling with the cable.
You heard that so clearly. Clearly and abruptly, like a lightning, crashing down before the storm even began. A knock on the door. One a bit too familiar. One that made the hair on your neck stand up fully in attention.
Your head whipped towards the door, panic clouding your mind. A figure stood behind the closed door, their shadow visible from underneath.
You could hear your heartbeat in your own ears, drumming loud and deep, taking your breath away. There was nowhere to run now. You were trapped in a house you didn't even know existed a few minutes ago. A primal fear took over your body, but you weren't able to move, weren't able to tear your eyes away from the incoming threat.
The doorknob rattled as the person behind began to open with a creak.

Love Potions
Leander (Mixology) x GN!reader
Word count: 1,1k
Summary: Leander finds another mysterious bottle to add to the new menu.
Author note: Very very short fic inspired by @/paris.animatesyt (Arlsan) 's drawing of Leander on tiktok!! Posting it today alongside the other one just to get it out lol
The bar was bustling with it's everyday noises. Patrons and customers sat at their seats, talking, laughing and whispering their own secrets among each other. Nothing unusual.
Another bottle was popped open, the sun shining on the green glass, casting a glow of emerald green around the wooden counter behind which you stood, pouring the shots. The radio played an upbeat, energetic tune, and you couldn't help but slightly sway to the rhytm.
It's been a few weeks since your menu was updated and your new drinks seemed to be a great hit! You were glad you could be of service, attracting new clients not only due to your amazing bartending skills. A drunken flirt was nothing out of the ordinary for you. Usually, you'd just shake your head and carry on with your shift. The same shift you were glad you could be partially spending with Leander. When the nights weren't as packed, you two would sit at the bar and chat for what felt like hours. You weren't surprised he was a great conversationalist, you felt that anyone who looked as classy and neat as him would be.
A few dollars landed into your tip jar, a grateful smile danced on your lips as you watched another customer leave with a happy expression on their face. You turned away to reach for the top shelf when a familair presence filled the air behind you. Not even having to look over the shoulder, you already knew who it was.
Leaning against the counter was your favorite co-worker, playful smile painting his features. You were just about to greet him when he quickly pulled out a mysterious object from behind his back, triumphantly placing it in front of you with a 'clank'.
You stared at it for a second, a bit too surprised even though you shouldn't be.
"Look, I know we've been over this," the man trod carefully, "but just hear me out! I saw a customer leave this behind on one of the tables in the back and I just couldn't leave it there! Right?" his eyes were soft but he quickly changed his joking demeanor when he saw your sudden stern expression.
"I-I called out for them of course!! They didn't seem to want it back, though." he ended his sentence with an awkward laugh, his eyes closed.
In front of you stood a lean bottle. Nothing out of the ordinary so far. Especially not for Leander, who just loved to bring you strange containers of liquids with unknown origins.
"Are you sure they won't be looking for it?" you asked, "I mean, this is a pretty hefty bottle." picking the object into your hands you could feel it's contents were still almost full. The tag has been torn off but not enough that you couldn't still make out the pink outline of a letter 'L', printed in big cursive. You did not recognize that brand.
"Noo, trust me! Come on!" he leaned closer, beaming, "Why don't we try it right now? Add more specials to the menu?"
"Leander, are you sure? You remember the last time... " you began your warning, recalling the copious amounts of drinks he insisted on trying, some with unexplainable side effects which even brought him straight to the hospital.
When you directed your gaze back at him, his own eyes were opened wide, giving you a pleading puppy look.
"Ugh, fine. But just one drink, alright? Just one. " you replied to his enthusiasm. He'd be the one drinking it anyway.
"Just one."
You took out a clean glass, grabbing two more bottles you knew he liked together. Opening the new mystetious substance, a sweet, fruity smell immediately filled the space between you two. That should pair nicely. Quickly pouring the liquids together, you couldn't help but notice the unusual color after it mixed with the rest. The same shade of pink with something which seemed almost like glitter. Such a pretty drink, you silently thought to yourself, maybe it should be added to the menu afterall.
"Bottoms up!" you slid to glass closer to the man, who seemingly had the same thoughts about the drink as you did. His eyes sparkled as he took the beautiful concoction and drank it up in one big gulp. The glitter reflected against the light of the indoor lamps, catching your intrigued attention even more so than before.
"Honestly? It's not that bad. The aftertaste is a little--- " his normal, calm voice was cut off as his hand abruptly shot to his temple, his eyes closing tightly. "Ah!"
"Leander!" you called out, grabbing his shoulders, hoping you wouldn't have to calk 911 again.
"It's uh, it's- " his eyelashes fluttered, he looked around as if a sudden headache overcame his senses, leaving as fast as it came. "It's alright, I'm alright," he panted.
Your grip didn't tightened, wishing he could just spill what was wrong with him this time, not letting you worry so much. His crimson eyes burried deep into yours, his face slowly gaining the same shade. He was eerily quiet, just studying your face as if in a trance, too aware of fhe closeness.
"This one is... " he tried speaking again, but swallowed his words hard instead. "Have you always looked so... ?" he didn't finish, squinting his eyes and leaning even closer, looking too confused.
This reply caught you off guard completely. "What?" you laughed, "What is that supposed to mean?"
He blinked a few times, still not realizing what he just said, the blush on his cheeks still prominent. You might have had an idea what just happened, but you didn't think it was possible. But again, with what you already saw in this town and in this bar, it would be nothing out of the ordinary. The hold onto Leander's shoulders finally let go, you pocketed the bottle somewhere under the counter, far away from the other 'normal' drinks. His stare was drilling holes into you the entire time.
After a few more minutes, you finally spoke up, your own pink tint appearing on you face under this intense gaze, "What?" laughing again, you continued with your work, some other customers already coming back for more rounds. As you shifted your attention back at them, you couldn't shake the familiar pair of eyes off of you. On one hand, it was a little bit nice. Finally having your little crush looking at you so intensely and so adoringly, the other part made you ever so slightly nervous. What were the ethicts of love potions anyway? If it even was a love potion and not just some nuclear-waste-level life threatening beverage. "Don't you have anything better to do?" you joked sarcastically.
Aftermath
Leander (Mixology) x GN!reader
Word count: 2,5k
Summary: What would happen after the events of mixology, when Leander can’t possibly handle any more drinks, can’t go home on his own and definitely can’t stay at the bar by himself?
Author note: Something quick and silly to get me back into writing, I’m adding my two cents into the very small mixology fandom. Still working on more drawing and fics from my main fandoms (chilling devotion and creepydates) though!!
The aftermath was quite something. Various bottles of mysterious liquids laid across the table, making rather instresting dispaly. Of course, all the liquor, all the booze and all the drinks you mixed weren't exactly non-alcoholic.
It did took you a bit of time. To mix 56 drinks was no easy job, but the menu had to be updated at some point.
Your eyes flipped through the rows of the newly written list of apperitives, tapping the side of the paper with your pen in an absent minded motion.
Most of them were alright. Some were really amazing! The other ones were... questionable. You made sure to make a small note at every single one of them, discarding all the bad ones. Tucking away the clipboard, you slowly stood up to close for the night. Another semi-busy day succesfully done.
One glance towards the window revealed the late evening hour, the darkness of the night already spreading across the sky like a huge splatter of ink. You glanced at the clock. The establishment was long closed, so you weren't worried about any late 'last call' customers. What worried you more was the state of your favorite co-worker. Poor Leander, who, at first, was so willing and eager to help, was now slumped across the wooden table, seconds away from blacking out. His eyes were glossy and tired, but his lips were curved in a bashful smile, drool escaping a corner of his mouth in a thin string. One of his hands was held under his chin for support, his elbow on the counter. Quite ironic, you thought to yourself, how strange is it to see a bar emloyee drunk. You didn't linger in it for too long, as the realization of your own guilt settled in.
Everyone liked Leander. He was handsome, charming and friendly, making even the most stubborn patrons take a double look. There were numerous instances when you saw a generous tip or personal phone number being boldly slid to him on a piece of napkin. The man would always offer a polite smile, thank the customer, but that was about it. Everytime it happened, a strange feeling followed, you couldn't quite place it. Maybe it was jeaulousy? Why weren't you getting as many suitors? It wasn't like you were bad looking, not at all actually. Still, you had to avert your eyes every single time. If you had to guess, maybe it was just another case of the grass being greener behind the fence.
"Bartender... " the familiar voice spoke. There was that word. Always so professional; you wished he would just call you by your real name sometimes.
You gave him your full attention with a hum. Taking the bottles by their necks you began cleaning up, circling a rag across the wood to wipe away all unnecessary spilled drinks of the day.
"Don't worry, we're done for today." you spoke casually, pretty sure he wouldn't hear half of what you just said due to his intoxicated state.
The man processed the sentence for a minute, the alcohol clouding his mind. Then he nodded with a hiccup. You could see the visible red tint on his cheeks, wondering if he always looked like this when he blushed.
You continued on wiping, cleaning and organizing your working area, deep in thought, trying to partially distract yourself. It was getting increasingly harder to ignore him, worry starting to gnaw on your insides. It's not like you expected to get him this drunk, or for the drinks to work this fast, or just the fact his alcohol tolerance was this low. A few long minutes passed; scanning the room there really wasn't anything else to clean before anymore. Plus, you were getting a bit tired yourself. There was no reason to prolong the stay.
However will he go home?
The question kept flashing through your mind. Of course, you couldn't leave him to stay here. On the same note, you absolutely couldn't let him drive home, and walking the streets in this state could be really dangerous. When finally, you decided to voice the source of your troubling.
"How are you going home, Leander? Do you have someone who could pick you up?"
The man, not bothered by any external forces, laid his head on the wooden surface, giving a long pause before speaking.
"Noo, not really," his eyes were closed as if already ready to fall asleep, his tiny smile still present on his face.
His answer narrowed your options, for better or for worse. A slight pinkish shade appeared on your face. It wasn't like you two knew eachother that well or for that long. You've never been outside of work, you didn't even know where he lived! But at the same time, he was always so kind to you. Often going out of his way to show you around, help you or encourage you, especially during your rocky start. The least you could do was to repay the favor - even if it meant letting him stay in your crappy one bedroom apartment. But truth be told, it wasn't like he was going to remember anything from this evening anyway. At the moment, his safety was far more important than your embarassement.
You pulled out the keys, walking in front of the counter where your co-worker sat. "Okay, sooo the shift is over. It's time to go home."
He lazily hummed back. "Are you sure? Why don't you mix another one of those specials for me, you know, just to be really sure about it's taste." He talked sloppily, tripping over his own tongue, dragging some syllables for a bit too long.
"What? No way, dude." you chuckled dryly, "I think you had plenty of those already." Remembering all the liquids the guy had to unfortunately wash down, some quite altering or even dangerous, sending his straight to the hospital. No wonder the drink testing took almost the entire day. But wow, what an incredible healthcare system, you were in awe.
"Come on, let's get out of here." you shook your head.
Leander finally yawned. "Alright then," Even when drunk, his voice still held the same elegance and gentleness as normal. Despite everything, you wondered which drink he meant by the term 'special'. You had some idea - you weren't even really sure why you remembered his favorite combination out of all 56.
He tried standing up, but his head quickly spun, his vision blurred, making him lose balance. If it wasn't for you catching him, he'd definitely hit his head on the floor.
It all happened too quickly, your reflexes taking the better of you before your brain could even react. You held him in a strange dip, tightly grasping onto his back as he put his full trust into your hands to not drop him. His own ones held onto your shoulders, definitely not too firmly or stably. The captivating, unusual crimson gaze burried into yours.
"I- um," you began, clearly startlet, blushing profoundly at the sudden close body contact. The man looked at you for a few seconds longer, scanning your face before letting out a heartfelt giggle. You could feel the warmth he was emitting even despite the various layers of his attire separating his skin from your touch. His bowtie and his hair were both a little dishevelled, his black eyeliner slightly smudged and in this angle, his body under yours, you fought desperately for your heart to not beat any faster. You were so caught off guard by yourself, he was your co-worker afterall.
Shaking your head, trying to lose this train of thought, you pulled him back to his feet. "C-Careful... Let's just go." you murmured.
Taking his own arm, you swung it over your shoulder instead, helping him with his balance. He chuckled again, swaying a bit. Your hand wrapped around his waist for support, small droplets of sweat ivoluntarily forming on your forehead. All while you could smell the booze on his lips when he shifted his weight even closer to your frame.
Obviously you were nervous. Who wouldn't be? It wasn't like you had a crush on him or anything, but Leander was an objectively cute guy. Who seriously wouldn't be nervous in a situation like this?
You gulped louder than you wished you did, hoping the floor would just swallow you whole. Somehow you knew that this night would get a whole lot more embarassing for you.
Finally the two of you made it out of the front door and into the street, only illuminated by the faint glow of the lamps. Even the moon was hiding under the cloud covers. The cold air hit you like a literal truck, bringing you back down to reality. Scanning the road and the alleyways around for any danger, you didn't detect any potential threats. In fact, everything seemed so still, quiet and alone it felt as if time itself stopped entirely. No lights shone from the faraway hotel or apartment windows, it felt almost uncanny. But in all the time you worked these kinds of late night jobs you already got used to it; you were sure you weren't the only one who did. In this silence your keys rattled way too loud. Quickly you locked the building and headed clusily stumbling towards your car.
Luckily for both of you, it wasn't parked that far. You opened the back door for Leander. You didn't want to admit it, but there was a scarily high chance he'd throw up, and you'd much rather he'd do that in the back where you could clean it objectively better than you would in the front.
Gently stuffing his inside, he let out another light laugh, spreading his full body across the seats limply, almost like a ragdoll, yawning. Closing the door, you let out a long breath. At least now he was somewhere a bit less dangerous than just out here in the open.
Not wanting to waste any more time, you yourself sat down and swiftly started the engine. It wouldn't take long to get home, there would be a minimal amount of cars on the road at this hour.
And just like you expected, the ride was rather smooth, stopping the car as fast as you started it infront of the right building. Grabbing him by the shoulder again, dragging him unhurriedly and carefully in, you opted for the elevator. Leander yawned again, letting his eyes close and his head slowly droop onto your shoulder and into the crook of your neck on the way up. Even such small touch could spike up your heart rate once more. It was the alcohol in his system, you had to remind yourself. If he saw himself right now he would definitely be just as embrassed as you were.
A faint 'ding' anounced your arrival to the correct floor as the doors opened. Keys ready in your hands, you wasted no time to finally get home.
"Here," you said softly, "this way." Clumsily shutting the door behind you two, you helped Leanded get into your bedroom, his hands over your shoulders again. You slumped his body on the covers and threw your stuff to the corner of the room, taking a moment to really think about your next steps. Wiping a droplet of sweat from your brow, you returned back to the hall and into the other parts of your apartment.
You'd just sleep on the couch, you decided, it wasn't like it was any problem at all. A quick shower would be a good idea aswell, but you didn't want to leave your friend unattended.
The bathroom was clean when you began brushing your teeth, fatigue of today already beggining to seep in. It didn't stop you from moving around though. You located the nearest bucket, wherever in the darkest corner of your apartment it was, and went back to the sink, washing away the last bits of foam from your mouth. You didn't hear Leanded - you expected him to be shuffling around.
"Leander?" you creeked open the door to the bedroom once more, placing a fresh glass of water on the nightstand and the bucket by the bed.
The lights were off, making it difficult to see in the dark, but you could outline the general objects and directions. The man still laid where you threw his limp body not that long ago, his chest rising and falling in slow rhytmic tempo. It was mesmerizing.
It wouldn't be that long until sunrise, just a couple of hours. You probably could check up on him a few times during. Whatever.
Finally, after what felt like eternity, you stumbled into your livingroom and slumped down onto the couch. You were too tired to even bother to change, sleep overtaking your senses much quicker than usual.
~~~
You woke up with a minor headache, not being really able to recall yesterday's shenaningans, your mind still clouded with the last bits of sleep. Yawning, you rubbed your eyes, slowly sittingg up on the not-so-comfortable couch. The sun already shined through the windows, announcing the late hour. Luckily, it was one of your days off.
But why were you sleeping here in the first place?
As you looked around your familair apartment the memories suddenly dawned on you. The menu, the drink testing, Leander in the other room.
You rushed oved to check on him. Opening the door, you weren't sure if the scene in front of you surprised you or calmed you down. Leanded sat on the bed, his vest buttoned open, rubbing his head.
"Ah, good morning... " he began, but you could see the hesitation on his face as well as growing flush on his cheeks. You hesitatntly greeted as well, raising an eyebrow.
"Where am I? Is this your apartment??" while still rubbing his head, probably from the throbbing headache, he looked almost elbarassed.
"Yea, why?" you couldn't really understand what he was implying.
Finally, he looked into your eyes, waiting a few seconds to let out what was troubling him. "I just- I'm so so sorry. You didn't have to bring me here, causing yourself so much trouble! I mean, I don't know where I would stay," he added the latter part quietly and nervously, "but you shouldn't have bothered! Not to mention, I don't even get that much drunk normaly- "
"Leander," you cut through his rambling with a soft tone, "It's nothing really. I'm just glad you're alright."
The truth behind your statement was written all over your face, now sincerely reciprocating his stare. His tense body seemed to relax a bit as he realized there was no point in arguing, for better or for worse. A small smile appeared on his lips, mirroring yours. "Thanks." No more words were really needed.
Once you realized the silence has been stretching for a bit too long now, you cleared your throat. Now it was your turn to be flustered.
"Well, then," you looked down at the floor, still blushing, "Let's make some breakfast, hm?"
> "Jim…"
