Social media bans aren't about protecting kids

they're about control.

currently the UK has already put the ban in place, needing face id or a photo of an government id to access certain websites, including wikipedia and spotify, Australia is going to put their ban into place on December 10th and the US is considering it.

these bans have all been said to be about protecting kids, but instead of educating kids on internet safety, or offering support to parents to help keep kids safe online, they are banning social media, long with educational and important resources for women's reproductive health, addictions, SA, LGBTQ+, etc for people who haven't verified their age with third party verifcation systems.

as of writing this, Australia announced that youtube will be included in their ban, and in what I see as a way to get unbanned, they have now imposed a rule that ai with decide how old you are based on your watch history instead of the age you put in.

all of this is not going to protect kids for porn, or harmful media. kids still managed to get these things before the internet and they'll continue to do it.

this is an attempt to block us from getting information easily and accessibly, and make it far harder to find out about what they're trying to hide.

the ban has already block videos from gaza from people, and it will continue to block information about conflicts, politics and anything they decide we shouldn't know about.

the only way to stop this from happening is to speak up. get angry, protest, scream, cry, do whatever it takes to get their attention and say 'we're not going to put up for this'.

I personally can't organise a protest, or go to one. it's not something that's possible for me, but I'm hoping that by providing information and spreading awareness, we can hopefully get some resistance.

I do want to say that I struggled to find information about the UK ban for a reliable source as I don't live there, it's all from posts on here and on reddit, so if someone has more reliable/correct information for me, I would love to have access to it.

How long before we start seeing cases like these for just being queer? Do we have to get to that stage for people to start to mobilize against this loudly? if you are unaware, everyone under the age of 16 in Australia will NO LONGER BE ALLOWED TO HAVE SOCIAL MEDIA. this includes, Spotify, discord, youtube, and such a long unreasonable list it is insane.

not only, will this ban completely isolate children who have no where to go BUT the internet, be left alone, but adults will also be asked to send images of their ID’s, faces, and more.

AUSTRALIA BAN UPDATE

Official results from the age assurance technology have been released by the Australian government - they don't work.

From an article from The Guardian, results about the technology showed that it doesn't work. Users that are 14 have an error rate of 34% and users that are 15 have a 73% error rate that identities them as over 16.

That doesn't even include users that are non white, female or older, that got very incorrect guesses.

Clearly, this technology isn't going to work. The proof is right in front of their eyes. A robot cannot guess a user's age at all correctly, especially when they're targeting users from 13-15, which can very well look like they are over 16.

They say that they are now going to look at users interactions, which will also not give them the desired effect.

A 25 year old can like Kpop Demon Hunters. A 13 year old can like Grey's Anatomy. What someone posts isn't going to tell you their age.

All this ban is going to do is ban adults from social media, and our world currently runs on social media. Companies adverse on social media, some jobs require it for communication, people live in remote areas where social media is one of their only ways of communication. They say it's for kids mental health but they're all just isolating them more.

Banning things has never worked. They tried doing this with porn twenty years ago, and it didn't work. AI isn't going to make it work now.

hey there. so i had a small concern of my own and i think it might be worth sharing.

so i'm an ally on this anti-kosa bill protest. but i live somewhere this hasn't been introduced (nor have there been any talks any such). but what concerns me is that with nations like the usa and the uk and australia taking this step, what if the government of my country also decides to go ahead with this? now, i have no issues reblogging for this cause on my tumblr but i would like if my digital footprint is alright just in case this dire situation arises here too.

so i was hoping maybe a few tech-savvy friends could tell everyone a bit about how everyone can ensure their data is not associated with them and just general internet safety, masking ip addresses etc etc.

I'm not crazy tech savy but the best thing for you to do would be not verify your age if the ban gets in place. If your super concerned, maybe change your email to an anonymous one?

there's probably more secure ways of protecting your digital footprint and if someone has better ways, feel free to share, but I personally don't have much to offer. Just, don't hook up any id or face ids to your account and you should be fine I hope.

As someone living in Australia, I hate this censorship act so much, I am so tired of all this fighting but I don't want to give up out of pure anger and spite. Still, it's really tiring...

I totally understand. It’s completely draining.

Ignorance is bliss but ignorance also lets them get away with it.

I recommend trying to avoid looking at posts about the ban for a few days. It’s good to take a break if you can from stuff that only gives you anxiety or makes you mad. Yes, being aware and educated is good and being able to unplug from these things is a privilege but you need to take time to do stuff that brings you joy and surround yourself with people who you enjoy the company of.

I know things are hard right now for people in America, the UK, Australia, and Canada, but I don't want anyone to give up because that's exactly what they want you to do. The relevant laws say the course of action is 1) contact youtube directly from your account under "send feedback" and formally state that

AI cannot be used to determine your age this is just a massive data breach with no connection to age verification as AI does not think or understand it is just collecting

This information will include (say nothing identifying here but use a legitimate example) medical information, private emails, purchases that might get you fired or hit with a hate crime etc. no details but point out the seriousness it would be taken with if it were doxxed by a human trying to target you

Point out that it will include name, address and identity details that could result in stalking, swatting or another attack

2) When they dismiss you send the response to The Privacy Commissioner directly to complain that they dismissed your concerns (This is the ILLEGAL PART HERE)

3) Now you can join a class action lawsuit if you provide the proof you just collected
