“Then it's a good thing I've found you,” Gido decided promptly. “I'll teach you, or my crew can,” he grinned at that. They had welcomed Frau with open arms despite him being a kid, so he didn't see much of a problem with that. Gido doubted that her requests would cause trouble, or maybe she would just tag along and learn what they were doing. “Would you like that?” He asked, his eyes focusing on the doll for a moment long, studying her face.
His features softened when she continued to speak. “So you like to read? I do too, but there's only so many books I have on this ship. Most of the textbooks are about engineering and the likes, mine are stories mostly... well I guess that's helpful too for learning. It helps you understand people better I think because you get to walk in someone else’s shoes in a way. You could say I think it furthers empathy, and that's a good thing.”
With a questioning look Gido tilted his head. “What's a dinosaur?” he asked, as he finished the last pancakes, then continued with the waffles. “I've never heard of something like that.” But he grinned when Irre stretched out her arms as far as she could. “They must have been really quite something”, he replied. “Were they as big as dragons? They're easily as huge as my ship, and the Aegis is pretty large.”

Irre’s eyes followed the taller male’s movements as he put the first round of toast on the plates and continued on to the next ones. Her own head shaking at his initial question, “No tickle..new to..irre..” she admitted and she leaned over the counter to get a better look, red orbs shining at the food being prepared, her actions nearly causing her to nearly fall over. But she managed to catch herself with her hands, the doll re-positioning herself so it didn’t happen again.
As soon as she did so, she perked up at the mention of her home, “irre lived..in a small..house..in the center..it has..a big open..space..with lots..of plants..and big trees..and they are really tall..taller than irre..and there..are lots..of animals too..” She could almost go on into detail about the surrounding area but she wasnt one to notice everything so it was only what she had become familiar with. The doll’s head ended up tilting when Gido asked if there was someone with her, to which she shook her head, “uh uh..irre..is alone..irre has..been for..uh..–” she started to count with her fingers but then got stuck once she counted ten “long..time..irre..doesnt remember..though–maybe..12..m-monts..? moths..? 12 moths..” she nodded assuming that her answer was right.
She didn't know tickling, and even if he had tried Gido wouldn't have been able to feign a look which wasn't surprised. Though he figured it fit, it didn't seem odd, it just wasn't what he had expected. Gido watched her red eyes for a moment, before focusing on their breakfast once more. “You're not quite familiar with all of this, are you?” He observed thoughtfully.
Her description sounded much like a large clearing in the middle of a forest, and given that she didn't smell much of human it was no surprise that animals wouldn't shun her at all times. Gido turned the pancake over and watched it as he listened to her words. The realisation almost made him drop the flipper. By all means but Irre was basically a baby let loose on this world. Gido didn't know what to make of that.
A year could be long, but if Irre had spend that year in a forest it was equal next to nothing in experience of their world. Of course she wouldn't know all these things. “Where there books?” Gido asked, masking his surprised. Irre knew about some things and of course she wasn't as helpless and of course she was able to grasp her environment properly. Twelve months just really wasn't that long to be alive and suddenly that particular word made Gido halt and he studied Irre. If she was alive, someone would have assigned a number to her soul, wouldn't they? They all had a number, even the souls of the Ghosts. He would have to ask Ea about that later. Maybe it would help him find her home if Ea could trace back the soul to its origin. He placed the pancake on it’s stack and poured some more batter into the pan.
✣▐░▒ Mac and cheese. An answer the chief of staff was certainly not surprised of, as it is a food any young child would ask for from their parents. Ayanami always found it interesting that macaroni and cheese is something which tends to be associated with being a child’s favorite food.
Not only it was an answer Ayanami would expect from Gido, but it was also the perfect answer he wished for; as it is a meal which is on any kids menu at any of these casual family dining restaurants located inside the Hohburg fortress, especially for those soldiers who dwell within with their families. If Gido wanted anything more specific than Mac n’ Cheese, it may even mean going outside of the fortress, which is difficult even for the high ranked officer who happens to be a warsfeil.
Though the chief of staff did not give any verbal answer, still grasping his gloved hand onto the tiny hand of the little boy, he lead him back out of the apartment, with the curious Sigrun tailing behind, with her sister still peeking in caution from the corner. Soon after the staff officer locked the door, he beckoned Gido to follow along, which is his way of approving the child’s request.
It was a relief that Ayanami made no comment on his choice of food. Of course it was typical for children to demand such simplistic things but simplistic wasn't what Gido usually got at home, so it was a welcome change. Strangely enough Ayanami seemed even please, Gido thought as he watched his face wondering if there was something odd about his words after all.
He didn't even comment on his sister, maybe he didn't know her after all Gido thought. The military was bigger than he had imagined now that he had seen the large building for himself.
Uncertain what to make of Ayanami holding his hand Gido's gaze wandered around. Usually people either demanded him to stop acting like a child (which made no sense at all to him) or they didn't bother with him, and neither involved him holding someone's hand. If anyone, it were his older sisters demanding he should hold their hands while they walked so he wouldn't get lost. Gido never bothered when it was them, he loved his sisters too much for that.
“Actually I have four sisters,” Gido rambled on absent-minded, unknowing why he even told that to the other. “Teegan's just the oldest, so I don't get see her as much.” It was on his mind and then it was out of his mouth. “I guess you've known that anyway...” he concluded with a shrug. Suddenly remember he wasn't just anybody's son and nobles liked to remember too many details about other peoples families. And high ranking people from the military were usually nobles, that much Gido already understood. In silence he kept walking beside Ayanami.

✣▐░▒ The more Gido spoke, the more annoyed the Grau got. Gido’s desperate words to convince Ayanami not to force Eve’s reincarnation’s memories back just irritated him further to the point that he just wanted to punch….Or better off just kill Gido away.
However, if he kills Gido ( which is impossible as he is the scythe ), he would very likely be kicked out of his only and final sanctuary, the church. He will have no chances of the ( damned ) chief of heaven giving him salvation. It is the only few times Ayanami decided to let his anger be on hold, before anything which can tarnish his chances happen.
“ Just fuck off, ” A livid, angry murmur was the only reply he made, and those were the only words, clear as the bright sky, showing in his confused mind. “ Just fuck off Zehel, or else you won’t be lucky, ” Slowly, shaky yet with confidence, he stood up after threatening the other, intending to walk away from the other. Narrowed amethyst hues of anger glared straight into Gido’s icy blue hues which are clearly filled with determination to get the other back on the right track.
It did take a few seconds for the Grau to properly stand up without the aid of the white, marble guard rails. As he stood up, he continued staring straight into Zehel’s eyes ( The window of the soul ), for a few but long seconds, then turned his back and continued heading towards the dining hall, which at this point he believes his brother is wondering where he is.
As Ayanami was slightly phased at Gido’s words and warnings, he absolutely gave no note when his baby white dragon companion came out of hiding from his outer cassock, and skipped towards Gido. Climbing straight onto Gido’s shoulder, Yukikaze made desparate cries of squeaks and chirps to help out his best friend to not do such terrible actions to Eve.
Gido had expected more. More than just a simple “fuck off!”
And there was more, but it wasn't spoken. It was in his posture, in his gaze swallowed by wrath and in the black spots still covering his wings.
Gido had half a mind to take his chances with the warning Ayanami had given him. If that was what it took not to do something as incredibly stupid as he was talking about, it was a fairly small price.
This time though, he didn't hold him back. It made no matter what he said, Ayanami's mind was set – however Gido could watch out. That much he could do and make sure Frau didn't end up in a questionable situation at the far end of Ayanami's puppeteering.
He was surprised to find Ayanami's little pet – Yukikaze, was it? – to agree with him though. “If you won't listen to me, then listen to him…” Gido said, adding his own voice to the dragon's cries. “You trust him, don't you? And don't you care what Eve wants, not even a little?”
For all that he would have liked to complain how that wasn't love, Gido doubted that anything loved by a grim reaper could call itself fortunate. Death meddling with emotions seldom had its desired outcome, or none at all. Verloren had been created without emotion – it wasn't a huge leap figuring out he wasn't good at handling them the correct way.
But that wasn't a flaw, not really, not unless he chose to be stubborn about it, like Ayanami right now.

Climbing straight onto Gido’s shoulder, Yukikaze made desparate cries of squeaks and chirps to help out his best friend to not do such terrible actions to Eve.
Ayanami was seething that much was clear, and Gido supposed he was to be scared, but somehow that didn't happen. Whether it was because he didn't think Ayanami would go through with his words, or because he was already dead and he didn't think it possible to be annihilated now Gido couldn't say. Or maybe it was all it mashed together somehow.
Or maybe that was because he felt sorry for Ayanami more than anything else. To live a life so desperate for love and being unable to obtain it still, that he thought he had to force it to stay. “So be it,” Gido quietly said. “I’m not letting you become your worst self.”
Surprised Gido welcomed the tiny dragon to sit on his shoulder and tilting his head to look at the squeaking thing. He wasn't sure what that was about, but the better part of him didn't want to believe Ayanami was willing to leave Yukikaze behind just like that.
Gido wanted to say something, but all the words on his tongue seemed meaningless. It wasn't like Ayanami was going to heed them anyway. Regardless of what Ayanami thought of him, Gido was hoping he wouldn't give in to the darkness which showed in black spots dotting his wings. And regardless of whether or not Yukikaze actually likes him, he seemed to agree with Gido on that point.
“Give him time,” Gido told the tiny dragon. “He's stubborn like that.” And he scratched Yukikaze's head. That and maybe Fea were able to set Ayanami's head right in end. Gido had no intention of following Ayanami any further at this point. The other had no knowledge of Eve's whereabouts so Frau was in so no danger for the time given. And yet… Gido couldn't shake off the feeling that he should watch over him. Though whether he meant Frau or Ayanami with that he couldn't say.
✣ ~ Despite the ‘ All right ’ Gido gave as an answer, Ayanami felt that the child didn’t really know if he would be scared or not, judging from the tone of the answer.
Though he ignored the question of eating with the other soldiers, the fact Gido brought up the talk about his sister tuned in his attention. “ ….Who is your sister? Is she in the army? ” He inquired, as he brought out the key to his dorm. He may….Or may not know her, though it is likely he knows her as he slept with many of the female members of the military.
The question about his siblings however, made Ayanami freeze for a moment. Krom, the older brother he truly loved, yet ironically killed with his own hands during the Raggs War. Then Kreuz, the other older brother who constantly worried during the time he fell ill during his sickly days, and ended up devouring as he is Vertrag, his own fragment. The chief of staff altogether ignored this question as well, and proceeded to open the door, with part of his attention on the child just in case the panthers do something, though it is unlikely.
Just as expected, Sigrun patiently sat at the door, awaiting for her master’s return, while Thrud knew a stranger was going to come, therefore, she sat far away from the front door, peeking behind the wall, observing the strange child. Sigrun cautiously, yet curiously approached the child, sniffing at his face, then sat back down watching him with wide, curious peridot eyes.
For safety precautions, especially with Thrud, the chief of staff still kept his hands locked onto Gido’s as he brought the fat feline to the cat room, where the smaller typical household cats he fosters live. Going through the double door, he puts the cage down, unlocking it, to see the fat cat lazily come out of the cage, then slumping to its basket, to continue its typical feline job of sleeping.
“ Now we can go out for dinner. What do you wish to have? ” The chief of staff knows some chain family restaurants within the fortress for the soldier’s convinience, and very likely Gido has his favorite food which is in the range without leaving the fortress.
Without missing a beat Gido replied. “Her name's Teegan,” smiling up at Ayanami. “She works here, I'm not exactly sure what she does, most of the time she works with the cadets she says.” His older self would have laughed Ayanami's thoughts of given that Teegan was more than a decade older than both of them.
When Ayanami fell silent Gido watched him with a mixture of curiosity and a frown. That looks reminded him of something, but he couldn't quite place his finger on it. Somehow the other reminded him of Jo and suddenly it dawned on him. He had the same look as her when he asked her about their mother. “Oh... I'm sorry,” Gido muttered and lowered his gaze. “My mum's dead too,” he said, a little more solemn than likely for a child as he squeezed Ayanami's hand. His sisters often did that, and it seemed fitting to do so now.
Gido felt his heart rising in his throat when the panther came up to him and curiously sniffed at him. He was glad when Ayanami dragged him away to let the fat cat out of its carrier, and stayed close to him.
A little taken off guard Gido simply stared at Ayanami when asked what he wished to have. Thinking he started chewing on his lip, he hadn't been asked about what he wanted to have in a long time and quite frankly he wasn't sure what he was allowed to ask for. Though Ayanami seemed nice enough… “Mac'n cheese,” Gido decided. Knowing that it was likely far from what Ayanami expected, but it didn't happen often that he was allowed to choose his own meal. Let alone eat anything that wasn't fancy in some aspect.

✣ ~ It has been a while since the last time the chief of staff treated himself a long, comfortable bona-fide soak in his grand-sized marble bathtub. It was just then Ayanami let his guard down for this night to sleep wearing nothing but his towel bathrobe. Just as he was about to pick up his book before drifting off into the realm of dreams, he saw another naked male, laying on his bed as if he were waiting for Ayanami to come in.
“ Zehel, how….? ”
For the longest time Ayanami didn't even notice him and Gido didn't bother to make himself noticed. Not until Ayanami spoke to him. Raising his brows Gido pondered the question. “You have a surprisingly comfortable bed and I couldn't bother to get back up again...” Or dressed. He hadn't really thought about that part, though that would have been wiser.
Gido rolled over onto his side. There was little use in being embarrassed now. “And you know, I have a name,” Gido huffed. He had almost forgotten about the mark down his hip.
The person you love is not the same as they were when you first started loving them and they are not the same as they will be when you die. Love must be adaptive. Love must be smart enough and strong enough to survive constant change. Love must not be rigid.
clearly quite absurd
After a lot of hard work and creativity the staff was finally done with their piece. The frosting had finally frozen and could be taken out for everyone to see.
‘‘Amazing…’‘
‘‘Finally.. it’s done..’‘
‘‘Beautiful!’‘
The exhausted workers breathed out.
‘‘Good work everyone!!’‘ the patisserie almost yelled with excitement. ‘‘It’s time to open and invite our special guest back!’‘ the man said as the said guest suddenly walked in.
Inside could be seen a large winged beast made out of milk chocolate with a marvelous ship-like structure on it’s back that was made from candy and hard icing. Yes, the patisserie and his employees had decided to make the ship that Guido had always talked about, the ‘‘Aegis’‘.
‘‘Ah, welcome back Guido. W-what do you think?’‘ Haruse said nervously as he looked at the piece of art that he had worked on for hours.
Gido stopped and stared, his mouth opened but there were no words coming out for a while.
They had built his ship. They had built the Aegis out of chocolate and God knows what, but certainly enough sugar to kill a small child. Grinning Gido turned to face Haruse. “It's beautiful and I feel almost sorry I will have to destroy it… almost.”
Still smiling Gido examined their piece of work. Given it wasn't everyday people would go all out to surprise a pirate. Next time he would have to bring his crew, he thought smiling and broke of a piece of candy and icing. It was sweet and delicious. “Maybe not as much,” Gido added, smirking.
“I am afraid it won't live long,” Gido admitted as he sat at the table on top of which the ship was seated. This time he broke of a larger chunk of the ship fraction of their sugary construction, continuing to happily devour his Aegis.
Everyone I might definitely disappear into the cave of video games and netflix from time to time.
✣ ~ Though Ayanami blinked when he observed Gido gritting his teeth during the handshake, he wondered what must make him so concerned about his wrist.
Though the chief of staff did not speak a word nor act anything on the way the child rubbed the sore spot on the area where he felt the strange bump. He could tell it must certainly be painful when the child pays attention to the said area. Yet, it also gives some clue in the chief of staff’s curiosity on why he seems to have some sort of discomfort within his wrist.
Zehel was usually such a nuisance, that he wouldn’t mind having him thrown out of the window, just like how he deals with the major any time he pulls some sort of prank. Gido during his childhood, was surprisingly the complete opposite; good natured, and one of the children Ayanami can deal with without losing his temper.
Ayanami doesn’t hate children; he practically does not care for them as long as they are polite and understand manners and etiquette. Though he wouldn’t use violent and harsh punishments like what he uses on his subordinates, he wouldn’t mind giving a misbehaving child throwing a tantrum a good lengthy preaching and lecture.
He realized the elevator has already brought the two to the floor where his dorm was during this time he mused about the questionable wrist bump and children in general.
“ When we arrive to my home, you will see a panther, a very big cat. Do not be afraid of them, ” Ayanami decided to give the child a precaution about Thrud and Sigrun, his pet panthers. Sigrun would be very likely waiting at the doorstep yearning for her master’s return, while Thrud would be far away, peaking from behind the wall cautiously.
Gido tried to make sure nobody saw when he rubbed the sore spots on his wrist and palm. That was usually where the pain extended to and where the bones seemed to be still in order. The fact that he couldn't form a full fist spoke of something different though.
So far Ayanami had not commented on his actions, so it was likely he hadn't noticed. Or just as likely that he didn't care. Or that he simply had no intention of bothering with Gido more than he needed to.
Ayanami's words made him snap from his thoughts. “A panther?” Gido asked wondering. He hadn't had any pets and except for the wolves now and then he'd never seen any large predator up close. “All right,” Gido replied with no further idea whether or not he actually would be scared. He figured that they were going to be like that fat cat, only… bigger.
“Don't you eat with the older soldiers?” Gido questioned. Given that he only knew detailed reports from his sister he could be wrong, but from his understanding it was rather odd for someone not to seek their food in the canteen. He had completely disregarded the fact that it was in the middle of the night. “My sister always talks about this place, when she's home. Though that's not very often, because she has to help fight off bad guys so it's okay. She's really strong and smart and… she always says I'm going to join her here one day, but… I don't think so.” Gido chewed on the inside of his lip.
Then he looked up. “Do you have any siblings?” he asked, scrutinising Ayanami's face. Somehow his features reminded him of the little prince, or maybe that was just the hair but of course that was ridiculous.

✣ ~ After a good several steps walking away from Gido, who just upset the grau even further after asking him on a practically touchy subject, most of the rage has settled down. Without the mother panther following him, the rage would have not settled so easily like earlier. Ayanami was close to his room, which is fairly close to his older brother’s room. Unlocking the door, he first let the large black feline in, then entered himself.
Throwing his heavy, white outer cassock to the side of a wall, the Grau tossed himself to the bed. As he laid belly side down, his amethyst eyes witnessed the large paws of the mother slowly yet skillfully climb onto the mattress, laying down, letting her large, black furry back touch Ayanami.
As he smiled at the large feline smile on the large black cat, his eyelids suddenly felt heavy as time passed. The weight on his eyelids became unbearable, that he shut his eyes, drifting away into the world of dreams.
Several hours has passed. A warm, wet tongue slobbered on the grau’s face. He struggled a bit, slightly shuffling his wings as he is interrupted and brought back into reality. As consciousness bloomed to its fullest, Ayanami realized he has taken a lethal nap; he realized on the clock, several hours has skimmed by since the event he had earlier with Gido.
The dinner hour was coming close, he carefully left the soft mattress, trying not to awaken the panther who was still somewhere in a dream. Picking up his now wrinkled outer cassock he threw earlier, he tossed it back over himself, giving a full coverage for his feathered appendages.
Despite the fact that it was nearing 5 PM, the sky was still bright like an afternoon sky. It was summer; no surprise that night was to fall and darken the skies a little later.
The Grau briefly mused at the sky, just at the second he ended his musing, he felt a strong physical slam on the left side of his head. Ayanami fell over to the ground, holding onto the slammed area with his left hand as he slowly sat back up. He hated to admit it, but it was indeed painful. It took him a few moments of his blurred vision clearing up to realize that it was Gido responsible for blowing such a powerful hit on the side of his skull.
However, his expression remained unphased as the other started shouting at him on how terrible the idea was; of bringing her….Or his memory from the past of a millennium back and the possible consequences of it. Though he didn’t show it directly, the Grau wanted to punch Gido back in retaliation, but hesitated as he would probably end up with a broken bone due to his frail strength and not wanting to deal with Labrador’s plant remedies.
Right after being harshly poked in the chest, Ayanami grabbed that wrist which jabbed him just now. “ I don’t care; I will take what it takes to get her….Or him back in my arms. If I needed to, I can just alter the memories to ease the hatred, ” The pokerface was slowly morphing to an insane, more maniacal smile, as if it were trying to hold back a nerve-wrecking laughter. In the meantime as he sat there with his smile, unbeknownst to him, his feathers developed tiny, black spots which clearly grey into black stains of heavier sins….
Ayanami basically just fell over, making Gido wonder if he had used more force than he had intended to, though it was seemingly just as likely Ayanami wasn't feeling so well.
“Are you... all right?” Gido asked and wanted to help him get back up again, but Ayanami was seemingly seething so he rather stepped back. Carefully examining the situation, before his frustration took over again.
There was no time to react when Ayanami grabbed for his wrist. Gido only tugged once, upon which he realised that resistance was futile. “And what kinda love is that, that's based on lies and altered thoughts.” Gido shook his head in disbelief.
“I get that you're heartbroken, but how you expect her soul to accept that behaviour of yours when you'd rip anyone doing that to you to shreds and don't 'that's not the same' me because it bloody is!”
Instead of forming a fist or bracing himself to escape the grasp Gido had grabbed Ayanami's arm.
Gido had long since noticed the black splotching his feathers, but he tried not to stare. “Ayanami, listen to yourself...” It pained him to see the other like this. He wouldn't believe this to be all there was. “Listen to me. You have a right to be upset, by God you do, but that doesn't justify your intentions. You'll just end up hurting her, and you don't really want that do you? You know you won't be able to keep her from scratching that wall in her head till it crumbles unless you force her and that won't make her love you any more either way.
“Listen, I know… I know it hurts. And you obviously don't know how to handle that, and nobody's going to blame you for that… just don't do this,” Gido insisted. “You don't want him to be right, do you? You don't want your death sentence to be justified, do you?” Gido pressed his lips together and swallowed. “Emotions are likely the only thing I have the upper hand on between the both of us, so trust me – this is not how you solve this.”
Gido knew it was foolish to think that maybe if he talked enough something would break through the wall Ayanami had built for himself and maybe he would get through to him. Gido knew it was foolish to think he would be able to just talk away the smears of black on Ayanami’s wings.
