I’m so sorry. I have kept this a fairly pure Naruto blog for years, relegating my other hyperfixations to likes and not reblogs, but this new one is breaching containment. I am catastrophically unwell.

I don’t take people who insult published books they don’t like by saying “it reads like fanfiction” seriously, because these people obviously don’t know fanfiction doesn’t automatically mean “bad quality”, fanfiction doesn’t automatically mean “lesser than published original novels”.

some fanfic writers put as much time, effort and research into their fics as writers who write original works do their books, if not more. (not saying every fanfic writer has to do their research, obviously, because fanfic is a hobby, not a job. but some fanfic writers do insane amounts of research on what they’re writing about, I believe some fic writers put more effort into their fics than writers who write original stories do their books.)

fanfic writers aren’t all children and teenagers either. while children and teenagers can absolutely write fics and while I think it’s super cool that they write at such a young age, a lot of fanfic writers are adults with jobs and responsibilities.

I’ve personally read fanfics that are way more professionally written than some best sellers out there.

whether a piece of writing is a fanfic or an original work has nothing to do with its quality. if anything, I’ll even argue that—while writers who publish original works—write as their careers, for money, fanfic writers literally write completely out of love and passion. there’s no money involved, no capitalism involved, no corporation behind their art. they write for free. without gaining anything in return. because they’re that passionate about the characters and the stories they write about.

obviously I am not saying “writers who write original novels as their careers aren’t passionate about their stories”, I am not saying “writers who write original novels as their careers don’t love their stories”. what I’m saying is that for them, they still gain money in return. but fanfic writers literally write purely because they love what they’re doing. without gaining any money in return. and when people make art out of love and passion, said art tends to be have souls in them.

Thistlebrook

Chapter 2

Sterling Thornby, president of Thistlebrook University, was positively seething in an enormous maroon leather armchair. The armchair had been imported from Italy, and had in fact been designed and manufactured specifically for seething. It had thick, deep cushions that would keep your backside cradled no matter how tense you were, reinforced armrests that could withstand a white-knuckle grip, and a price tag that ensured that anyone who bought it had sufficiently extravagant things to seethe about.

The armchair was one of many specialized features of Thornby’s office that he’d curated over the course of his long reign in his position. There was also a lamp fabricated in such a way and at such an angle that it would cast his face into an especially intimidating light and an arched window configured properly for professional-level contemplative brooding.

Thornby had been seething for an hour and thought he might seethe for at least two more. The situation was certainly dire enough to warrant it, and he was practiced enough at this point in his career to not need many breaks. Right in the middle of a particularly good bout, however, five playfully rhythmic knocks rang out in the room and ruined the whole atmosphere. Keep reading or start from the beginning

Protagonist now has more complex motivations.

Protagonist now remembers key facts about important people. He no longer develops convenient amnesia between cutscenes.

Protagonist now has a cooldown on certain adverbs. Adverbs have been buffed by 30% to compensate.

Developer note: Adverbs are important to writing but they are sometimes overused. This change keeps adverbs relevant while encouraging the use of adjectives and verbs.

The horse now has a name.

Deuteragonist snark power has been increased to 150, up from 75.

Characters now no longer reference the previous version’s climate and have been updated to react appropriately to the currently set season.

Solved a glitch where supernumerary limbs would sometimes emerge during complex physical interactions.

Should no longer display “[insertnamehere]” during conversations and narration. All of such occurrances have been replaced with the appropriate tags.

Conversation continuity has been improved. Characters will no longer inappropriately respond with lines from previous iterations of the narrative.

All references to “Event A” have been purged to reflect changes in narrative structure.

Now with more thematically-consistent swearing.

Back-to-back repeated words that resulted from sentence rearranging or start/stop editing have been cleared.

Paragraphs which contained two or more instances of the same adjective have had their adjectives updated to accurately reflect a player’s vocabulary inventory.

Minor time traveling issues have been resolved, all characters should now exist in the same tense.

Punctuation has been improved. Commas have been reduced by half.

Characters sighing has been reduced by 30%.

Characters looking at things or people during conversations has been reduced by 40%. To make up for this, characters thinking about the conversation has been boosted and descriptive narrative has been added.

Title has been applied.
