Things aren’t over quite yet: Both Georgia Senate races are headed to a January 2021 runoff that could decide Senate control.

This is where we are: Democrats (including the 2 independent senators Sanders and King) currently hold 48 seats. Republicans currently hold 50 seats.

If Democrats gain the 2 seats from the runoffs (Ossoff and Warnock) we will be able to TIE the Senate 50-50. In which case, Kamala Harris, the VP, will tie-break votes in favor of the Democrats, therefore giving us a “majority” in the Senate.

I cannot stress enough how important this is for Democrats. We need to get both Ossoff and Warnock in, otherwise Biden will have a very difficult time getting anything done in office over the next 4 years.

FOR GEORGIA VOTERS:

MARK YOUR CALENDARS. The federal runoff election date (aka for the Senate seats) is JANUARY 5, 2021! (State and local runoffs are held December 1, 2020!)

So my cat is having trouble peeing…

i hate begging for money especially when i know everyone else is going through so much worse but i need to do this

my cat, helena, has been having trouble peeing lately. she’ll let out a few droplets at a time and then run under our bed until she feels the need to try and pee again. we think it’s either crystals (which she’s had before) or a uti. either way, she needs to see the vet asap.

the only issue is that i only have $45 in my checking which will only cover getting in to see the vet. the rest (urinary exam, medication, potential diet change if it’s crystals, etc.) is what i don’t have money for. any money that anyone in my house has is already going towards things like groceries, bills, or gas.

i’m probably going to need anywhere between $150-$200 considering i know how expensive the exams, medication, and a crystals specific diet can be. i’ll delete this post either if we get an appointment for today or if we get get just enough money. whichever comes first.

Yet Another Unpopular LiS View

Seeing we’re doing the Unpopular Views… here is a biggie.

Joyce is guilty of child abuse by never stopping David’s abuse of Chloe

Perhaps the one character the most people view through rose-coloured glasses would be Joyce Price/Madsen. Even as people slowly start to accept that David was an abusive bastard (with some insisting that Chloe “deserved” what she got because of her instigating David), pretty much everyone has insisted that Joyce is a saint who puts up with the fighting between David and Chloe.

They are wrong. Joyce is not this innocent hard-working mother trying desperately to keep the peace. Instead, she is rather mercenary in her attempt to keep the peace by mollifying David and ignoring the abuse he inflicts on her daughter - and then goes on to lay guilt-trips on Chloe so she takes the blame for the ongoing familial strife. 

The foundation for Chloe’s issues with her mother and David lie between one and two months after the death of her father, William Price… when a newly-widowed Joyce left a flirtatious note to David in response to meeting him at the Two Whales Diner on November 27, 2008. We know that Max was 13 when William died, which means William had to have died after Sunday, September 21, 2008. (Joyce’s note was “It was an honor having you in the diner. Nice to know that gentlemen still exist. Love to talk again with you soon. BTW, the name is Joyce if you forgot :)” to which Max snarked ‘Joyce might as well have wrote “Let’s get married.“’ - so it wasn’t just Chloe who found this inappropriate.)

The photo montage reveals that David married Joyce before Chloe’s 16th birthday… which means she waited maybe a year after William’s death to remarry. While there is nothing wrong with remarrying and no real period of time you should mourn… I think it could be understandable that Chloe was upset. And this 15- to 16-year-old girl responded perhaps disrespectfully… and was answered with physical violence. To whit, if you had Max hide in the closet and not rescue Chloe, this is what happens:

Joyce: Why? What did Chloe tell you? 

Max: Well, Chloe texted me that David slapped her yesterday… 

Joyce: He feels awful… And he will be punished. But Chloe does push David and it’s not fair. He paid his dues in war. He does care about her, along with all the students at Blackwell.

In addition:

Max: That’s no excuse to hit a girl. He’s an adult.

Joyce: I don’t like it either, Max. David swore it would never happen again. He’s true to his word. I just want us to be a family soon. I guess…I guess it’s all about time…

Essentially what happened here was Joyce admitted David hits Chloe. This is not a one-off event (as some folk have claimed). Joyce does not deny that David hit Chloe. She doesn’t claim this was the first time. No, she creates an excuse for David. “Chloe does push David and it’s not fair. He paid his dues in war.” Note what she said at the end. “I just want us to be a family soon.” It’s not on David here… but Chloe. Chloe is unreasonable. Chloe pushes David. Chloe is a threat to a man who has a foot on her and at least 50 lbs. and combat training. 

This is not just Chloe, mind you. We see him harassing Kate Marsh to the point that taking a photo of him harassing her and then using it against him will get him put on administrative leave when Kate ends up on the roof. He has a history of this sort of behavior. It’s just Chloe who he gets away with actually hitting. 

But Joyce blames Chloe. Further, there is no building up to Joyce throwing David out. You can never mention Kate to Joyce, not talk to her about David hitting Chloe, and never say a single thing negative to or about him up until Joyce, Chloe and he are fighting in Chapter 4… but it is learning about the surveillance cameras in the house that leads to David being thrown out. David violated Joyce’s privacy and this is what drives a wedge between them. Not Chloe being hit. Not his harassing students. No. It’s cameras in the house.

Is Joyce a bad mom? I hate to say it… but yes. She was so afraid of being alone after William’s death that she chose her own personal safety and comfort over that of her daughter. And given that David outright states to Chloe’s face “you don’t have any friends” should Max either come out of the closet or never get in there to begin with… well, you know he has done his best to isolate Chloe and make her feel worthless. Joyce allows this. She either ignores Chloe when Chloe tries to tell her mom what David did… or claims Chloe is trying to cause trouble and that Chloe should stop instigating David. 

If Joyce hadn’t gotten together with David, it’s likely after a couple of years Chloe would have gotten her act together. Her home would have been a safe home, and fairly stable. While it’s likely Chloe and Rachel would have still have gotten together, I doubt Chloe would have rebelled to the extent she did when acting out against David and a mother who was letting her be abused. If she had gotten together with David but listened to her daughter and thrown David out when he became abusive then again, Chloe likely would have calmed down. She’d have realized her mom has her back. Hell, in that situation I suspect tossing David out for Chloe’s sake would have drawn mother and daughter together as Chloe realized Joyce truly loves her… and Joyce realized her daughter was more important than sating a need to not be alone. 

But that’s not what happened. As a result… Joyce either has to live with her regrets and knowing she could have done better but now has a daughter in the ground along with a husband… or likely died in the Two Whales when the Storm wiped out Arcadia Bay. But it says something sad that Chloe is so willing to die for her mother - the woman who sat back and let her be abused so that Chloe absorbed David’s abuse and accusations of being useless and felt it would be better to die and hope somehow that sacrifice would save Arcadia Bay.

On the topic of David hitting Chloe and Joyce enabling it, during the argument that can see him tossed out on his ass, he motions to strike Chloe. Who flinches and immediately looks panicked. Joyce doesn’t even comment on it. If Max doesn’t hide in the closet and doesn’t take the blame for the joint, David will hit her in front of Max. The physical abuse has escalated to the point where he’s bold enough to do it with witnesses.

Furthermore, I take Chloe’s willingness to sacrifice herself for Joyce as a mixture of idolizing the person who wasn’t actively abusing her, Joyce being her only surviving bioparent, and Chloe having long ago internalized the daily verbal and emotional abuse from David. She really believes that she’s worthless, because David has programmed that little voice in the back of her head to constantly repeat that message to her. She probably even has CPTSD as a result of the constant abuse. I’d wager that Max isn’t the only person struggling with nightmares and flashbacks in the Bae ending. The irony is that David probably did all of this because of his own trauma at the hands of the US military, both in boot and overseas. He sees Chloe as a raw recruit needing to be hammered into shape like he was in boot. The thing is that bootcamp is literally supposed to traumatize people into being soldiers, and in so doing he perpetuates the cycle of abuse. Chloe was literally just a teenager in desperate need of a good parent who would back her up and be there for here during a period of intense psychological distress. I doubt she’d be enthusiastic about any partner Joyce brought home, but instead of someone who even came close to William, she got Sergeant Hartman.

Do I blame Joyce for bonding with someone who had suffered loss similar to her? No. She was vulnerable and I suspect David might have capitalized on that to an extent. What I do blame Joyce for is not kicking him to the curb the moment she noticed the abuse, or Chloe tried to talk to her about it. Instead she rug swept and enabled him.

I also blame David for knowing he has PTSD, but not getting the free therapy he’s entitled to through the VA.

It’s horrific when you think of it. Then again, when I was younger I felt it acceptable to give a child a smack if they were going to do something like run into traffic or do something truly dangerous. I’d not realized I’d internalized my own parents’ abuse of me - and I didn’t think of it as abuse for the longest time. After all, my father only hit me a little bit. (Nevermind the fact I flinched whenever my father rapidly raised his hand and arm.) My mother never hit me (but did say things like “we should have adopted a pair of Korean children instead of having you, they at least know how to show their parents respect). It’s funny. We end up just ignoring the abuse we suffer because it wasn’t that bad. 

So someone sees Chloe hit once, verbally treated like shit, and folk are all over David and saying he’s a good man and Chloe does push… and Joyce! Oh Joyce is just a saint and Chloe just needs some discipline and to stop mouthing off. Bright Goddess, she is a teenager. And teenagers push their boundaries. It is how they seek to learn their autonomy and agency. You don’t answer by beating them and telling them they’re worthless! 

First time through, I actually had Max fix the relationship between Joyce and David. I didn’t know better. I didn’t realize how bad the abuse was. And you know, if you never had Max get into the closet and never saw the smack you might not realize just how bad it was. You don’t see what is happening before the eyes of other people. 

I may have mentioned this before but when I started writing about Life is Strange there was blowback when I commented on David being abusive. People did not want to hear that. I think a good part of that were the Chloe Haters who didn’t want to give any sympathy to Chloe, but a lot of it were folk who just didn’t see it as abuse. But when I mentioned that Joyce was abusive by not stopping David? It was like opening a door and letting oxygen feed flames. The reaction to this post initially was fierce. 

But here’s the thing. By not demanding that David go to therapy or anger management, Joyce also hurt David. This culminated with David harassing a church-going girl who did Meals on Wheels for people and was a genuinely good person because she got dosed with a date-rape drug and he blamed her of being a druggie and dealing drugs, he acted confrontationally rather than talk to her quietly and get her story. If he had done that then Nathan and Jefferson would have ended up arrested far earlier and Chloe might not even have ended up in that bathroom being threatened by Nathan.

This isn’t to say that if she’d insisted David go to therapy that things would have been all better. She was not responsible for fixing David. David was responsible for that. His need to be a hero (shown by how he acts far different after he arrests Jefferson and Nathan in the Everyday Hero timeline and how he is far more relaxed in the Chloe Lives timeline in LiS2 (I mean, planning to murder Nathan if he gets out of jail in the Sacrifice Chloe ending is not healthy)) is on him and only him. But insisting David did nothing wrong or covering for him? 

Here is how bad things were. We saw in the Everyday Hero timeline that after David got Nathan and Jefferson arrested, things so improved in the Madsen household that Chloe decided she was going to get her GED and look into taking some college classes. With a positive and healthy environment, Chloe stopped acting destructively and decided to move on in her life. This is the impact that abuse has on a person. All Chloe ever needed was for someone to treat her with respect and decency.

She found that with Max. She never found that with David or Joyce.
