Okay so I hijacked a persons post with a little summary of the Biblical allusions that are present in Wake up Dead Man (linked at the end of this post)

But I thought I’d make my own and yall feel free to add on or share anything that comes to mind:

1. Lazarus obviously was raised from the dead we hear reference to this throughout the movie i.e. Lazarus Door and Wicks’ whole ‘rising from the dead’ deal. BUT ALSO Lazarus a good friend of Jesus had 2 sisters Also very good friends with Jesus known as Mary and MARTHA.

And when Jesus visits their home, Mary sits at his feet with him and listens to his teachings being present with Jesus while Martha greets the guest and performs a lot of the formal tasks involved with receiving guests and is generally very busy getting the place in shape. She then complains about how Mary never does anything to help. To which Jesus responds by essentially saying that she doesn’t need to be so involved in all this formality and should just come sit as well, saying that Mary is doing the right thing.

I think it kind of shows how Martha gets so lost in the ceremony and the rules around ‘being the good girl’ that she loses sight of what is truly important. And all the labour she puts in, the hours of admin and paperwork, being essentially the backbone of the church all goes to waste in the end.

2. The story of the woman who is captured by the Pharisees and brought before Jesus in order here what he has to say (to clarify they don’t like him and are trying to get him to trip up). According to customs apparently she is to be stoned as punishment for being an adulterous woman. Jesus says nothing and starts writing something in the ground. He then looks up and says something essentially along the lines of “let he among you who is without sin cast the first stone” slowly the crowd dissipates and he continues writing on the ground and after a while he looks up at the woman and says “woman, where are they? Does no one condemn you?” And she says “no one” and then he goes “then I too shall not condemn you.” Which I feel applies to Grace and the entirety of wicks’ little conclave. Also that whole thing of Wicks pushing for a ‘walk out’ every week.

3. In terms of Grace and her lavish spending and being a worldly woman or what not. I believe the story of the Sinful woman is relevant. This I think is a just a few days before Jesus is crucified (spoilers for the non catholics - My boy JC dies… but not to worry! as they retcon this later) this woman who is presumed to be a prostitute or something basically and she takes a whole bottle of expensive perfume like truly extravagant stuff and anoints his feet (like she just douses his feet type sitch) and wipes it clean with her hair. The other disciples are like why are you wasting all that money what a gaudy display of wealth (especially Judas - who for those of you who don’t know is a jealous, money-hungry BITCH… yk biblically speaking. Even more so than their buddy Matthew, an actual tax collector who embezzled funds and took bribes and shit before they reformed him like a villain of the week situation). Jesus - who knows he’s gonna die and how he’s gonna die basically says “she’s just done a beautiful thing for me” and tells them not to speak ill of her as he considers this to be like preparing his body for his death yk like a funeral director. And while in most versions aka in Matthew, Mark and Luke’s gospel they don’t mention her by name and simply the sinful woman. BUT in John’s gospel he basically says that this woman who anoints Jesus’ feet is Mary of Bethany sister to Martha and Lazarus of Bethany…. So make of that what you will.

4. Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane begging God to let him not have to die and ultimately accepting his fate, before it all unfolds vs Jud begging in the church for a way out of this and ultimately deciding to go confess to a murder or two.

5. Samson trusting Martha with his life due to how much he loves her which ultimately leads to his undoing and Biblical Samson and Delilah. Except Martha is as scheming as Delilah but never thought Samson would end up hurt.

6. The Devils cast out of Mary Magdalene the same way the demonic perception of Grace is dispelled by Jud and Benoit uncovering the truth behind the ‘harlot whore’ destroying the church. @passingbypainfullyaware

So a quick thing on Wake Up Dead Man!

There's a few things I noticed due to being raised Catholic myself (blessed be my religious trauma) that nobody talks about.

The church this whole thing takes place in is a CATHOLIC church; why am I remarking this? Well, unlike protestant priests, The Catholic Clergy are FORBIDDEN from either marriage or sex.

A Reverend could have a wife and kids, a catholic priest CAN'T.

Thus; both Father Wicks (Prentice and Jefferson) had kids out of wedlock.

We're constantly bombarded with the image of The Harlot Whore, but it wasn't Grace who had kids while having a bow of chastity; it was her father, and then her son.

Neither men are chastised for breaking their bows AS CATHOLIC PRIESTS,NEITHER SHOULD HAVE CHILDREN AND THUS NEITHER IS IN A POSITION TO JUDGE WOMEN.

And more so in the case of Jeff, because the revelation that he BROKE his vows makes him want to say quits and run for an office, but there's the small issue that a Catholic priest CAN'T quit; they have to ask permision to their Diocese to retire (their Bishop), and the Bishop can either allow or deny their perrisher's request to retire.

So there he's commiting a double sin against his own vows as a priest.

So, to any devout catholic, Wicks themselves should've been already on their shit list; but they found it easier to hate on a woman who made NO vows of the sort.

All this to say Benoit was 100% right during the whole movie and the church was missogining the whole ass time.

According to the story Prentiss was a widower and single father before he took up the priesthood. So that’s actually fine under Catholicism as the vow was taken after the fact.

Wicks however DID break the Catholic teachings by having sex before marriage (regardless of if he was or wasn’t a priest at the time)

Also if you know anything about Jesus he would never have stood for that type of misogyny.

John 8:1-11 When they find a woman guilty of adultery and bring her before Jesus as the teachings say women found guilty of adultery should be stoned or whatever (also you don’t commit adultery alone and they don’t bring the man over to Jesus which pisses me off personally)

He says Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to cast the stone.

And he writes a bunch of stuff on the ground (which I assume is a list of their sins because hilarious) as the crowd disperses and then he says:

“Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?

She replies “No one, sir,”

“Then neither do I condemn you, go and leave your life of sin”

And another one that feels relevant is the woman who anoints the feet of Jesus. She is a ‘sinful’ woman (I’m guessing this means prostitution in some way) who is chided by the disciples for ‘wasting expensive perfumes’ and being overly extravagant. (Which feels familiar with Graces storyline) but Jesus responds with “She has done a beautiful thing to me” in the passages Matthew 26:6-13. And later in the Gospel of John it’s written that this woman who anointed Jesus’ feet was Mary of Bethany sister of MARTHA and LAZARUS of Bethany (Familiar names indeed)

On a note about Lazarus, Mary and Martha there’s a bit of scripture that basically says that Jesus was super close and friendly with Lazarus, Martha and Mary. Like to the point where when Lazarus dies he goes and bloody resurrects him.

One day he visits Mary and Martha in their home and while Martha greets the guest, she gets very busy with a bunch of tasks and prepares lots of things to welcome their guest. (Which reminds me a lot of how dutiful Martha from WUDM was.)

But her Sister Mary sits by his side and listens to his teachings and when Martha complains that she doesn’t help her around the house and stuff Jesus is like just come sit down and stop fussing over all that formality. And the moral of that tale is supposed to be that you should stop getting lost in the ceremony of it all and just be open to the teachings of Jesus and be present in the moment.
