I have just managed to delete my entire end of module essay while trying to check my word count. Luckily there was an undo button and I got it back, but I think that's the universe telling me that I can't work on it today.
Remember to save your work, kids!
Deep Space Nine 2x16, “Shadow Play”
I just cannot get over what a beautiful job Avery Brooks and Cirroc Lofton do playing father and son on DS9. The deep love and mutual respect that glows between them makes me so happy, and I appreciate that the show takes the time to develop their relationship instead of just skipping straight to action scenes and expecting us to accept that they’re a loving father-and-son duo without ever proving it to us.
It means a lot to see a dad who never responds “because I said so, that’s why” when Jake asks him a question; a dad who cultivates a relationship with his son based on their mutual love of things like baseball while also encouraging Jake to be his own person.
Also, I hope this scene helped parents watching it learn what being a supportive parent looks like. Ideally, parents wouldn’t make any assumptions about what their kids will grow to be, because it’s clear that Jake feels pressured to join Starfleet. But even though Sisko made the mistake of assuming Jake would want to be in Starfleet too, when he realizes his mistake he recovers quickly. He’s quick to reassure his son that all he wants is for Jake to find his passion and do it well. He doesn’t protest that “surely you’ll change your mind, Jake,” or say he’s hurt by Jake’s comment that Star Fleet is “too much like you.” Instead, he is proud of Jake for saying he wants to “find what’s me.” He doesn’t expect his son to be a perfect little clone of him whom he can mold to fit his own desires – he is proud of Jake for striving to be his own person.
It’s just. pretty cool.
Girls get made fun of for everything might as well do what you want lol
not to be dramatic but this mentality literally freed me
So like, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone say that it’s a bad episode, but I appear to be alone in my belief that Superstar is actually kind of great. It might just be that I’m just a big fan of episodes where the writers are allowed to go as meta as possible, and Superstar is certainly that. But idk, it’s also kind of a statement about Buffy herself as a character, by reminding you of everything she isn’t. Like she’s not the insecure person that Jonathan has turned her into - in real life she has accomplished great things, and she knows it, and she’s proud of it. But she’s also not Superstar!Jonathan either - that is, completely infallible.
And so Buffy rediscovers her heroism by believing in herself, and thereby literally regaining her strength, which of course weakens Jonathan, and it’s like, the writers are explaining to you why Buffy’s form of heroism is good and Jonathan’s is bad. Jonathan’s infallibility means that he has to be better than everybody else, and everybody has to be reliant on him, and so he weakens other people for his strength. Whereas Buffy’s heroism, at its best, lifts other people up. She utilizes the skillsets of the people around her, and she often encourages people to become better than they are.
And all this ties in really nicely to the themes of the season, i.e. the Scoobies growing apart only to realize they need each other - I mean what other episode of the show argues against the concept of lone wolf heroism so succinctly?
:”) plz notice that they’re holding sharpies okayy?? uwu reblogs are rad uwu @danielhowell @amazingphil

out of this world trolling lmao
For bonus context, the actual quote they’re citing for this protest comes from Edgar Mitchell (1930-2016), who flew in Apollo 14 and was the sixth person to walk on the Moon.
The full quotation, referring to the experience of observing Earth from the Moon surface, is thus:
You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch.’

I try to keep politics off this blog but this genuinely funny

Thank You Dan and Phil
Since #thankyoudanandphil is trending on twitter, I wanted to share this.
I have struggled with my mental health for as long as I can remember, I essentially lost everything but my family because of it.
But then last year I started watching Dan and Phil’s videos again and I found that I was genuinely excited about something for the first time in as long as I could remember. It was like I’d been trapped in a pitch black cave and had stumbled on a box of matches to help me find my way out.
I’m not out of that cave by any stretch of the imagination- it may take years before I manage to find my way out, with many stumbles and wrong turns ahead. I still struggle with things like leaving the flat alone, I don’t deal well with people or noise and I struggle to take care of myself. But I have managed to get a good look at my surroundings and this year I have begun making some small changes where I can.
I now actually get up in the mornings instead of sleeping the day away, I’ve drastically cut down on smoking and I have somehow almost finished an Open Uni access course (just one more essay to go) as a precursor to hopefully starting a degree next year.
And I think the catalyst for that was finding that one spark of interest that I’d been missing out on for so long. So I think it is appropriate to say thank you for handing me that box of matches in the first place.
