The satirical research field "parachute use to prevent death and major trauma" is such a goldmine. The two major publications

and
https://www.bmj.com/content/363/bmj.k5094
are pretty much perfect satire of the way pseudo-skeptics dismiss domain experts and demand "hard evidence" in the form of exclusively flawless double-blind controlled studies, while clearly demonstrating that they have no idea what that entails, or what the limitations of RCTs are.
wild way to say "kill yourselves"
But the randomized control trial that was actually performed (second link) found no evidence that parachutes prevent mortality! (because they could only recruit people willing to jump off small, landed aircraft)
You know that part in Little Women when Jo cuts and sells her hair when their dad is sick and acts nonchalant about it but then cries about it later? I think Ponyboy would really like that part.
I think that there's something really corrosive about the majority of online content. Way too much stuff relies on the assumption that interactions with other people are scary and uncomfortable, that the ideal posture in public is one of aloof refusal to engage with people socially, that you should, on absolutely no account, ever leave your room.
It's so annoying and I hate seeing people whose only notion of forming community is having superficial interactions with others on the internet where you just find the best and most subtle arguments to support your worst impulses.
Shit sucks

Quote of the day
I’m seeing a lot of people saying this post changed their brain chemistry, and as a neuroscientist I wanted to say yes!!! Yes it does!
Wanting something requires dopamine signaling, but liking something doesn’t.
If you have a mental illness/disorder that affects dopamine, you might feel that you don’t want to do the things that you like. You do still like them. You will appreciate having done them.
Let your likes guide you.
(If you want to read more, here’s one experimental paper about it. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5171207/ This theory called the incentive-sensitization theory was originally created to explain behaviors in addiction but can be applied elsewhere as well)
Rewards are both ‘liked’ and ‘wanted’, and those two words seem almost interchangeable. However, the brain circuitry that mediates the psych

"Focus on your likes, not your wants.
You may not want to exercise, but you like how it makes you feel.
You may not want to write, but you like the feeling of accomplishment.
You may not want to wake up early, but you like the calm beauty of morning.
Wanting is the desire you feel before doing something. Liking is the satisfaction you feel after doing something. Let your likes guide you.
