I have to remember that Hickey is a vain man. He's disgusted by David Young coughing up blood, and I think its because witnessing someone succumb to 'weakness' is as abject and disgusting to him as the blood itself. He likes to look clever, powerful, dignified. His carneval costume was his civvies, top hat and all. This is key to his charisma. And he is clever, but he can never be clever enough to succeed, only to strive interminably. He's the kind of guy who retaliates against personal failure by blowing up any possible chance of success by anyone besides him. He is not a goofy guy by choice. He grits and grins and plays it off because he knows deep down that, like David Young, certain people find him embarrassing to witness.
