I used to read a hundred books a year or more, easy. And then a few years ago, I justā¦stopped. I spent three or four years reading almost nothing but fanfic and meta, partly thanks to depression and partly thanks to life circumstances, but also just because FANFIC IS AMAZING and itās FREE.Ā
Eventually I did start reading books again, and Iām happy about it, but honestly? Who cares if what I was reading for a long time wasnāt published by a paid author? Reading fanfic brings me joy, a very specific kind of joy that I canāt always get from books, and allows me to share that joy directly with the authors! Thatās amazing, and something you rarely get with books. All of which is to say:
If youāre the kind of person who used to read so many books and now you read nothing but fanfic, you should feel ZERO shame about this.
If youāre only reading poetry, or only short stories, or only fanfic, youāre still reading stories. Even if all youāre reading is twitter or tumblr, youāre still reading stories.
Even if youāre reading nothing at all, I still donāt think you should be ashamed.Ā
You love stories, and you will read more when you have the spoons to do so. And in the meantime, stories come in other forms, and right now maybe youāre getting your stories from TV or moviesāenjoying them, thinking about them, dissecting them with like-minded fans, writing meta about themāor maybe youāre writing your own stories in your head. Those are all good and valid ways of experiencing stories! And when you find that you need more than that, maybe you will read books again eventually.Ā
In the meantime, itās totally okay that youāre not reading books, for whatever reason. Itās not shameful. <3
Iād like to add: if you only read graphic novels or kid lit or cheap paperback romances or vintage travel memoirs, youāre still reading, and thatās great! Donāt let anyone shame you into thinking youāre not ~really~ reading unless itās all weighty biographies and dense classic novels.
Is it good for your brain to be challenged by something new or different or thinky once in a while? Absolutely, and if you feel up to a challenge, go for it! Enjoy expanding your mind, and take pride in every page you read. Read with a friend for extra encouragement, maybe! If youāre reading what feels like the literary equivalent of meal replacement shakes or fast food nowāyouāre still reading. You can absolutely think critically about whatever youāre reading now. You might be amazed at what you can discover by just thinking deeply or talking with friends about the media you consume, even if it seems shallow or easy.
You cannot shame yourself into reading ābetterā books. Thatās not how shame works. Just focus on enjoying the things you do read. Maybe someday that will open up new pathways in your brain so that youāll want to read other things. But itās not shameful if you donāt. <3
"Even cis men?" is the obvious response to my stance that practically anyone can be lesbians, and to answer with another question: are any cis men actually doing that to begin with? I mean, unironically, not as a joke? Because I don't think they are. Generally cis men aren't not going to sincerely identify with the term the way cis women and trans people will. Cis men essentially self-regulate themselves out of the definition without anyone needing to make that definition have concrete limits.
Whether it's WLW, transmascs who drove through Dykeville to get where they are now, or anyone else, you should assume someone calling themselves a lesbian has a good reason for doing so.
The only ācis menā i knew to use the label are the ones who lamented āi wish i could be a lesbian but unfortunately im a cis manā approximately a month before Realizing something about themselves and I will always ALWAYS maintain that being gentle about what that could mean for them is the right answer and not āomg youāre trying to prey on lesbiansā
The two types of people to ājokinglyā identify as a label:
1. Asshole trying to be edgy. If youre mad they double down, if you go ok ill call you that, they freak out and distance themselves from the label
2. Someone trying to figure themselves out
In both scenarios, using what they insist they are brings out the best outcome, and assuming someone is a 1 when they are a 2 and being hostile will only (shockingly) make it harder for them to come to terms with their identity
and of course, i've said this before, but: if a cis man genuinely identifies with the label "lesbian" and is NOT joking about it, who cares? if someone feels like their attraction to women is queer even if they are ostensibly cisgender, that's none of my business and it's weird that people think it's theirs. what happened to the era of not asking people invasive questions about their gender, genitals, and sexuality?
Additionally- cis is a spectrum just as much as the rest of it. A cis guy could be like (imagine a pinched fingers emoji here) this close to being nonbinary such that the distinction is meaningless. A cis guy could be bigender about it, or agender about it, and still consider themselves cis enough to count. A cis guy could be a system, with girls in it. A cis guy could have an unusual romantic attraction, or particular sexual preferences or something, that fall more in line with lesbians than anything else. A cis guy can be drag queen for drag queen or something, and tbh that's not *not* lesbian imo.
This Pride I hope that all of you never ever forget that no amount of sanitizing your sex life or sanding down of your LGBT edges will make bigots accept you. So, donāt debase yourself by capitulating an inch to them, especially in ways that throw your fellow community members under the bus.
You are a degenerate faggot in the eyes of bigots whether youāre wearing a nice button down and slacks with combed hair or leather daddy kink gear. So stand with the freaks who will stand with you until the endālong after the bigots have abandoned you despite your claims to be āone of the good ones.ā
happy pride to these idiots š

Thinking about Harrow and confession.
In Catholicism confession is important. You admit your sins receive penance and are forgiven. It used to be that if you didnāt go to confession you couldnāt receive the body of Christ.
We see Harrow confess her sins to Jod and Gideon both of whom hold a sort of spiritual authority beyond her (even if she doesnāt know about Gideon).
But thatās the kicker. Confession canāt be done by anyone it has to be someone with spiritual authority and the only people who had that in the Ninth were her parents. After their deaths she would have been the leader of all devotional aspects.
She would not have only been unable to receive atonement for her sins but she likely would have bore the confessions of the entirety of the ninth.

Important rules for the "age verification" era of the internet that we're living in:
1. Do not do age verification.
2. If you have to do age verification, cheat. Do not under any circumstances give them your real ID.
The tool presents users with a 3D model they can then manipulate to, the creator says, bypass Discord's age verification system.
Oh no I dropped my link, what a horrible thing! Sure hope this doesn't get reblogged until it reaches users from the UK and Brazil!
And remember to not make a second account just to test out what works best when verifying your identity
A reminder that we still dont support Age Verification bullshit.

it's crazy that you used to be able to look up specific clips from a tv show on youtube. now regardless of your search terms you get 6 unrelated promo reels from the show's official account, 6 unrelated clips of literally anything else youtube thinks you might click on, 6 unrelated promo reels from the network's official account, 6 more completely arbitrary recommendations, 6 show trailers and publicity videos of the actors by content mills called 'pop glutton' and 'comedy chunk' and finally raw gameplay footage of a mobile freemium slots game and a video essay called Liberals Can't Belive It: 10 Times Hitler Was Shockingly Woke
you know the internet is dying when you can't even search glup shitto funniest moments and find a single relevant result
our data wizards crunched the numbers, and they discovered something truly incredible: users spend up to 10x longer on the website when they can't find what the fuck they came looking for
you joke but this is literally what google realised and changed with google search and youtube.
Wanna listen to this story instead? Check out this week's Better Offline podcast, "The Man That Destroyed Google Search," available on Apple
profit projections looked like it wasnāt going to be infinite growth for a quarter, and so the head of ads ousted one of the founders and implemented drastic measures to increase search queries. these measures were: making their services worse. this is NOT an exaggeration. itās actually crazy how anti-consumer google is as a company now.
Itās crazy that countries on the edge of the Sahara desert are reversing desertification by just digging half circles
The ground in these places is too compact for water to soak in during wet season which leads to flooding but digging these holes gives the water a place to stop and soak in. And theyāre pushing back the desert with this. By just digging holes.
The new plants also help even more water soak into the ground which reduces flooding even more.
These places also give people places to grow food and graze animals like people are turning completely dry compact desert into a refuge for wildlife and plants and solving regional food insecurity just by digging holes.
The half-circles are called zaï! They're a traditional farming practice in the Sahel desert, and their introduction + reintroduction can be largely credited to Yacouba Sawadogo, the man linked above! He reintroduced and innovated on the zaï on his own farm in the 1980s, and did extensive outreach (along with scientist Mathieu Ouédraogo) to encourage other farmers to adopt them as well.
He also promoted the use of cordons pierreux, which are basically just lines of rocks to reduce erosion, preserve sediments, and increase water absorption.
Immensely cool dude. He's been a personal hero since I learned about him.

Is this about how ppl born in the late 20th century have a unique and fluid experience of navigating barriers to information access and its our responsibility to teach the younger folks how to tinker with technology to avoid being spoonfed everything we experience in order to have critical skills that keep us informed, autonomous, and able to hold power despite looming threats of authoritarianism or..........???
