We know we’re a shipping blog, but we’d like to talk about Jack’s arc. This is simply our interpretation, not an attack on anyone else’s. We don’t think Jack has a negative character arc, despite what many people in the fandom say.

A negative character arc doesn’t simply mean that a character hits rock bottom. It means they ultimately embrace a lie instead of the truth that could help them grow, and because of that they end up morally, psychologically, or spiritually worse than they were at the beginning of the story. That’s not what happens to Jack. Like everyone who crashed on the Island, he starts the story already broken. We don’t see a good Jack becoming a bad Jack.

The Jack we see in the flash forwards isn’t the end of his journey, it’s his lowest point. He’s been stripped of everything and is finally ready for a profound transformation. His turning point comes when he finally unmasks himself and admits that he believed the Island could fix him.

The irony, of course, is that the only person who can truly “fix” Jack is Jack himself. And that’s exactly what he does. From that moment on, his real transformation begins. Jack’s journey is about learning to love himself, accepting that he can’t save everyone, and allowing himself to receive the love of others.
