Oxford English Dictionary Adds 15 new Transgender and Nonbinary Terms to its Online Dictionary!
Oxford Dictionary has just added a slew of important trans and nonbinary terminology to its online dictionary, OxfordDictionaries.com. The following terms are now officially defined in US English:
Agender, Bi-gender, Cisgender, Cissexism, FTM, Gender Dysphoria, Gender Identity, Gender-fluid, Genderqueer, Misgender, MTF, Mx, Nonbinary, Transman, Transperson, Transphobia, and Transwoman!
Life Outside The Binary does not necessarily endorse the particular definitions nor the wording therein. Many of these definitions may be overly simplistic or use outdated terminology. It is certainly more important to understand each individual’s understanding and relationship to a given term, and to understand their history and social context, rather than to differ to a broad general definition. There are also many other important words (such as transmisogyny, binarism and other identities such as neutrois and androgyne) that definitely deserve inclusion in dictionaries.
However, this is still a huge win for transgender and non-binary people! Especially words such as “cissexism,” “transphobia,” and “misgender,” (as well as several common transgender identities) being defined in a reputable online language resource may represent a huge step toward developing common understanding and acceptance of trans and nonbinary people and issues.

Also if you really want to learn most deaf people are so happy that you are interested in learning and will be super patient and work with you.
And it’s a really great thing to be able to do for any job because imagine having to go everywhere with someone that can translate for you or with paper to write or trying to read lips and just going to grab a cup of coffee and Hey, the barista knows sign language. They aren’t great but you get to speak with them and order your coffee in the way that’s natural to you like that would just make your day. Or a teacher that can talk and sign so classes don’t have to divide?? Or a therapist that can sign?? Hearing people signing 2k15 honestly.
I’ve been learning to help my HoH/deaf customers, so have some links!

ASL University (video dictionary, lessons, terminology, and more)
I helped a deaf mom communicate that her CODA son was missing at our pool! My supervisors had no idea what the frantic mom was trying to say, and her son, who interpreted for her wasn’t there! She was frantic, but I understood boy, and gone. I asked if he could hear. She said yes. We asked for him on the PA system. He showed up in 5 minutes.
Disabled historical figures that I never hear about being disabled:
Harriet Tubman (Epileptic)
Albert Einstein (Learning disability, mental illness, likely autistic)
Thomas Edison (Deaf)
Lord Byron (Talipes)
Ludwig von Beethoven (Deaf)
Nikola Tesla (Mental illness, likely autistic)
Charles Darwin (Chronic illness, likely autistic)
Claude Monet (Blind)
Joseph Pulitzer (Deaf)
Ted Kennedy Jr. (Amputee)
John F Kennedy (Asthma)
Frida Kahlo (Multiple physical disabilities requiring a brace)
Vincent Van Gogh (Mental illness)
Alexander Graham Bell (Dyslexia)
Agatha Christie (Dysgraphia)
Disabled people have been incredibly prevalent in history, and it’s cool. This list is by no means exhaustive and also is not composed of people that I necessarily like, but it’s cool to see historical figures who were disabled.
disability, history,
Samuel Johnson (the first guy to write an English dictionary) likely had some form of Tourettes syndrome
Florence Nightingale had fibromyalgia.
Vine Ableism
honestly ppl vine is the most ableist site out there… like literally nobody provides subtitles for deaf peopel
I feel like you’re making fun of the fact that deaf people are asking for captions on this site.
Wouldn’t you like captions now?
Also the fact that Deaf people are visual, and therefore the best at making their meanings clear despite the language barrier. Hearing people. Not so much. They require sound effects and music to get their points across. Even if you don’t know ASL, all of these vines are still funny.
Now unless this was captioned, it’s not funny for those who are D/deaf/hoh/ Learning English/ have any sort of processing disorder. It’s also just convenient for when you can watch the video, but not have the volume on.
You know what, I really want to add something to this. I went onto a DeafVine tag on Vine in order to find DeafVines for this post. It took me ages to find videos that had ANY Sign Language in them. Most are just silent, funny vines. That need no captioning whatsoever because they are so obvious in their meaning. I found the hardest to understand DeafVines, just for you. So really, Vine is a perfect platform for Deaf people. It’s hearing people that use it in a way that makes it inaccessible.
Oh my god the blizzard one will kill me
