I Fucking love Meta. Like really love it. And it kills me that most Dean meta is related to the ship.
Dean Winchester is a complex character, in terms of motivations and backstory. He has all the ingredients to a complex morality, behavior and mentality; complicated childhood and trauma.
The show actually makes a point on this, Dean has gone through some situations where to survive and/or save the ones he cares about he has to do some really bad/ morally gray things, that plus his time in hell make him more willing to do things that in the first seasons he qualified as bad. The biggest example of this being the ease he has to kill demons without caring for the vessel.
So we have a complex development in character and Mark's of it in the show, so why do most people assume that everything he does is for Castiel??
One thing is shipping and wanting to believed that your ship is real, but the other is believing that EVERYTHING is about your ship. Like dean and castiel are their own person, most of their decisions are made on what they believe and taking one account that the 2 of them have gone through some really serious trauma, their way of thinking is complex. What they do goes beyond: " I like castiel so I'm gonna wear red ".
When you take important points on their character's arcs and credit them to a love story that is not there, you kill the story, you make castiel and dean look like plain characters instead of the complex and Multidimensional character they are.
I saw a post referencing this ridiculous god-awful scene and it reminded me of the edit I created at the time.
So I’m posting it again.
