some context
1. my TA, Ralph, shot his girlfriend’s abusive ex in the foot
2. abusive ex was also a sex offender
3. he shot him when ex came buy to pick some stuff up from girlfriend and tried to take some of Ralph’s items as well
4. ex is stable and alive in a hospital
5. i didn’t do assignment 8 so i am very happy
some more Facts About Ralph
he is whiter then snow. this man is pure 100% american redneck in everything but the politics. this is intimidating if you dont know him because he owns like 3 different guns but also has animated discussions about “how his sister should be able to get married” when you bring up lgbt rights. his sister isnt even gay or trans or anything, he just thinks that LGBT rights also means that the lady should propose when she wants to. hes a little confused but he got the spirit. upon finding out that i am queer he said, word for word “THATS FUCKING RADICAL HOMIE”
in the first week of school he snorted a line of pepper in the cafeteria and threw up.
the only other crime hes committed before was accidently dropping a weight from his balcony and cracking the sidewalk. which is technically destruction of public property but the judge basically laughed at him and have him 10 hours of community service
this man once walked me home when i stayed late at the lab and talked to me animatedly about breeding brine shrimp for different lab purposes. absolutely captivated by this discussion. i trust him with my life
oh mg god this post somehow got better

Running into this on my dash was like running into an old friend
Thats just what theater kids are like
What I’ve always loved about this bit is
a. this musical number comes completely out of nowhere, with no greater context than what this video captures; and
b. the language instructor clearly can’t hear the music. He’s not from Musical Theatre Land. From his perspective, a couple of twinkle-toed weirdos just randomly decided to physically abuse him for three solid minutes. This isn’t reading anything that’s not intended into the scene – it’s literally the central gag.
@thebibliosphere in case you need some ridiculous Singin’ in the Rain on your dash.
(P.S. I imagined you making the faces at the instructor and it was hilarious)
I can but aspire to the level of expressiveness Cosmo Brown has with his face.
once i was at the philly museum of art and a security guard saw me looking at this sculpture that is just a head of romaine lettuce tied to a block of granite with a piece of wire (sculpture that eats by giovanni anselmo) and he was like. i’m here sometimes when the lettuce guy comes in to change the lettuce.
This sucks
I love this actually
what would they do if you started eating it. like yeah that security guard would escort you out but do you think theyd call in the lettuce guy for an emergency replacement or would they just leave it there half eaten until he came in for the regularly scheduled lettuce switch
go there with a sandwich in your bag, walk up to it, appear as if struck by an idea. open bag, remove sandwich, remove leaf, add to sandwich, big bite, smile happily, wrap the sandwich back up, leave.
go in with a bottle of caesar dressing and some croutons, apply to statue, declare it a transformative work
WAIT HOW THE FUCK DID THAT TRANSFORM SCENE GO WHAT
HOW THE FUCK ARE THEY WALKING
Pepper's Ghost Effect: the Beast seen in tge transformation is actually hidden and viewers are looking at a piece of glass with his reflection on it. When the super bright lights on Beast dim, the image fades to reveal his human form behind the glass.
Walking: all the support mechanudms are hidden under Belle's dress and she's carrying the prince around by his hand so his legs are free to dangle snd move and dance.
All still super impressive, the faces really get me too because there's no trick to make them so expressive other than engineering and craftsmaship and they even did it well on the horse
“But in the end, stories are about one person saying to another: This is the way it feels to me. Can you understand what I’m saying? Does it feel this way to you?”
— Kazuo Ishiguro
One of my favorite stunts ever executed in a movie is so simple yet incredibly groundbreaking and it’s in The Wizard of Oz when Dorothy opens the door to reveal a full-color world.
The Wizard of Oz starts out in black & white — standard of the time and what people were used to.
But then after Dorothy lands and opens the door, she reveals not only the magical land of Munchkinland but also the magic of technicolor in one single shot.
Since technicolor was not very widely available prior to the Wizard of Oz’s release, for many people it would be the first time they were ever seeing a moving picture in color. What better way to pull it off than in a big reveal like that? Fantastic! I know by today’s standards this doesn’t seem like a lot for a movie, but this was a great trick given the technology they had. What a special way to bring some magic to audiences, especially in a time when things were really down in America during the Great Depression.
ALSO
ALSO
This is the greatest special effect you never knew you were looking at.
The celluloid used as film at the time was thick and brittle. Splicing it was basically impossible. How to go from sepia Kansas to technicolor Oz? This was a problem that nearly sank that amazing reveal shot.
Until some crewmember said “why not just film it all in color and paint Kansas brown?”
That’s right. THAT WHOLE THING IS COLOR. ALL OF IT. Bobbi Koshay (Judy Garland’s body double) has been put in brown makeup to hide the pink of her skin. That dress isn’t blue and filmed in sepia, it’s an identical brown dress. The furniture? All painted brown. The walls and door were painted to match their color on the Kansas film rolls....a daunting task, because film at the time came out so incredibly dark that those lush Ruby Slippers were almost orange in real life, just to get that deep red color. (Early tests with actually-red shoes came out black rather than red!)
And it was done so well and so expertly that the only way to tell it’s even there is to get one of the 1970s or TNT prints where Kansas is black and white instead of sepia-tone (since the painted “sepia” will be out of place).
Today we could do this with a click of a button. Back then they had to invent a whole new set.
