i just think. elfangor has to be just a little bit of a bastard. in order to touch down in that construction site and see those kids and think "they will have to fight in my stead; they will have to save earth" you have to be a little fucked. he offered them a choice but was it ever a choice. they were doomed by witnessing elfangor's ship. there is no other way it could have gone. save yourselves and save your planet. look. you are elfangor. you are going to die. there's a chance you won't kill earth with you. you know it won't be enough. you know they are going to fight and bleed and suffer and die. and you know you are going to do it anyway.
I always read it as Elfangor touches down at the construction site, see those kids, see Tobias and see that the Ellimist has been an utter bastard to all 6 of them. You're right, there is no other way it could have gone, but Elfangor is the only one there who appreciate that the Ellimist "stacked the deck." What's he going to do? Not give his son the power to possibly stay alive and stay free while the Yeerks conquer the Earth? They are going to fight and bleed and suffer and die because of the whims of a literal God and there is nothing he can do but play his part.

Sometimes, after writing one scene, you realise you have to rewrite one or more previous scenes because honestly, what were you thinking back then?
You were naught but a callow youth when you wrote those previous scenes, and now, with the glorious wisdom that you have gained in the past 2 days, you can go back and get it right!

I'm going to be honest I think the notion that there is a clear-cut list delineating what is and isn't a romantic or platonic behavior that is universal to every culture, time and unique life experience is a complete load of shit.
