A big win for LGBTQ-friendly vocabulary.
The language we use to talk about gender identity and expression changes every day, and another major player in the language world has acknowledged it.
Merriam-Webster has added the words “cisgender” and “genderqueer” to its dictionary, using the following definitions:
Cisgender: of, relating to, or being a person whose gender identity corresponds with the sex the person had or was identified as having at birth.
Genderqueer: of, relating to, or being a person whose gender identity cannot be categorized as solely male or female.
LGBTQ language matters, and that includes (to an extent) validation, recognition and affirmation. I’ll take it.
