Recently finished watching The Apothecary Diaries season 2 and spoiled myself a little on the light novels, and honestly for some reason it's really hard for me to tell where the story will lead MaoMao and Jinshi to.

On the one hand Jinshi wishes for freedom. He saw how constricted Ao-Duo was as a consort and doesn't wish for the same to happen to MaoMao. Neither of them want this. The palace is a prison to him and if he was Emperor, he'd be sure to work himself to death. He simply can't seem to say no, no matter how silly or tedious a request might be. But at the same time isn't this what ties him to the palace in the first place? If you think about it, Jinshi could have took off long ago if he wanted to. Like Shisui who dissappeared and left everything behind. Is he really the type of person who can just throw away the role of Crown prince to live a normal life? It's not like MaoMao is someone who can stand still either. At the beginning she tries to keep her head down. She doesn't want to get involved in Royal Court drama. And yet here she is 2 seasons later, sticking her nose into everyone else's problems, always helping everyone despite the fact that she doesn't really have too.

It makes me wonder where the two of them are headed too...

Really? No shit Sherlock 😀 Good to see that you can recognize basic human decency. Now how about you use that wonderfully smart brain of yours to take a class on historical context and cultural relativism? Heck, throw in a whole course on the basics of literary/character analysis too.

How about instead of judging scenes in isolation based on initial reactions and personal opinions, you take into consideration the actual CONTEXT of the situation and world-building, the previously ESTABLISHED characterization of the characters and the dynamics they have with each other, and how it ties into the THEMES of the overall story?

Have you also maybe considered that Jinshi is not meant to be just a static cardboard cutout of a love interest and is actually his own character apart from Maomao and that he is also in fact an incredibly complex and dynamic character who has a character arc and learns and grows throughout the story?

To those who aren’t aware: The Apothecary Diaries is an anime that is based on an ONGOING light novel series. There are currently 16 volumes published (with #17 on the way).

Season 2 only covers up to BOOK 4.

This is like deciding that Zuko is an irredeemably horrible person after watching only book 1 of atla.

The last episode was literally called “The Beginning” for a reason.

These are two emotionally stunted teenagers who were forced to grow up too fast and raised in toxic environments that have warped their definitions of love, so you bet your asses that the story is going to treat them as such and explore how that has affected them and their growth as characters. They ain’t afraid to get messy folks.

Also, just throwing it out there right now: if y’all can’t handle Jinshi’s character development, you will have absolutely no patience for Maomao’s. Especially season 3 onwards. If this sounds like it’s going to be a problem, I suggest you do yourself and your blood pressure a favor and hop off the wagon. Please.

I honestly don't give a fuck how "problematic" a character is and i hate people that make a whole drama about it.

If you can't handle problematic characters and expect everyone to be some "goody goody pure fairy✨️" so leave. People like that ruin fandom experience.

I just sometimes wish Lihua's hairpin had served a greater purpose in the story. How could a hairpin (symbol of favour) to the poison taster of a consort by a rival not be important??

Out of the three hairpins Maomao gets during the garden party, it's the only one that isn’t plot relevant. Lihaku's hairpin? She uses to call a favour and visit back home. Jinshi's hairpin? She gives it away to Shisui and it saves her life.

Even though I know the hairpin is mainly supposed to symbolise being in someone's good graces yet I can't help but think receiving a hairpin from any man has slightly romantical implications. (Lihaku did worry that Maomao had assumed his hairpins meant he wanted her when she had called upon him.)

So it would have been interesting for me as a viewer to see how Lihua would be used in this way, plus I just like the hairpins thing a lot. I've tried to read up hairpin etiquette/culture in Chinese history and been disappointed with how few and far resources are in english. Also, everything I did find was for a couple and not between ladies so I wonder if that part was one of the creative liberties Natsu Hyuga took or something I just can't find.
