What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

#9/11 #i was in school at the time but very young #and I only vaguely remember anything prior to it bc my memory is shit

I'm gonna be so honest with ya'll, I'm not taking ANY critiques of Nolan's version of the Odyssey from anyone who GENUINELY BELIEVES HOMER CREATED THAT STORY

#bitch that story existed LONG BEFORE IT WAS WRITTEN DOWN DONT PISS ME OFF #legit saw someone say it was bad 'bc its different from canon' and this person has only read PIECES of a SINGLE translation #like STFUUUUU i know you assholes dont actually know the story #or understand that every translation will be different #and ppl dont seem to understand turning a story told through the oral tradition then written down then translated into modern english and #then translated AGAIN from english to a Movie is OBVIOUSLY going to be different from the original tellings #even though we also DONT KNOW the full context of the originals EITHER #the odyssey #and definitely not from people who dont understand fluidity of storytelling through the ages
