You were never a fan of doing group homework, you had always hated having to meet up just to get an assignment done. Or at least you hated it until you got paired up with Benny. He would usually do this kind of homework with Ethan as teachers normally let you choose your partners for the projects, but after last week's incident, Mr G decided that as a *punishment* he would be the one choosing the pairs this time. You couldn't help but let out a small smile as he named you after Benny. You had always been friends, and even tho Ethan was important to you too, the thought of getting to spend some time alone with Benny made your heart race.
That same night you met up at his place to finish as soon as possible as you insisted on not waiting for the last moment to get it done. You knocked on the door and not a minute later Benny opened the door. He stood there for a second with an awkward smile, greeting you and inviting you in.
"What's all that?" he asked, looking at your bag.
"I've done some research already" you replied, letting him overlook some printed papers. "I'm sorry, I just really hate this kind of assignment, the sooner we finish the better"
"Well, less work for me, not complaining" he mocked.
You rolled your eyes and let out a small laugh as you followed him to his bedroom. You had been there countless times, but this time it felt different. You weren't with Ethan to try out a new video game, you weren't trying to figure out how to fight a monster, and (thankfully) you weren't there to help fix a Benny's magic mess. It had been ages since you were there to just do homework and hang out. Just the two of you.
It took you a while to actually start working, Benny kept yapping about a new game that had come out and how it was a masterpiece. It took you a while to make him shut up and focus on the task, tho it wouldn't last long as he would always find something else to distract both of you away from the homework. Thanks to your previous research it didn't take you that long to finish, even if every five minutes you were distracted with something else.
You wrote the last few lines on the paper as Benny closed the tabs on the computer, his eyes lingering on you for a moment as you put the pencil on the table.
"I'll keep it, we can hand it in tomorrow" you smiled, putting your stuff back in your bag along with the finished homework.
"Yeah sure"
A sudden uncomfortable silence started building up around you. You had had a great time and now that the work was finished there was nothing left to do but go home, although a part of you wanted to stay, just for a little bit longer.
"So..." you smiled awkwardly. "I should- maybe I should go. I don't want to bother you, and there's this new album I want to listen to, so..." you said nervously, a hint of sadness in your voice.
"No-" he rushed before you could finish speaking. "It's fine, you can stay a while if you want, you don't bother me at all" he rushed the words out of his mouth, as if he didn't want you to go.
"Uh- sure" you smiled, putting your bag down again.
"What album do you want to listen to anyway?" he asked, trying to keep the conversation alive.
"I don't know its name, I haven't looked into it yet, but it's the new one by Single Tear"
"You really like that?" he mocked "That's pretty emo"
You couldn't help but laugh. "Yeah but they're good. You should listen to Rory sometimes, he has great taste in terms of music"
"Oh come on, you discovered them because of Rory? You're not making it any better, that's lame"
"Benny!" you softly punched his shoulder. "You haven't even given them an opportunity, they're really cool, I promise"
"Fine" he sighed with a playful smile.
He logged back in on his computer and opened YouTube, looking for the album. Just a few notes of the first song were enough to make him look at you with a skeptical look on his face. You were slowly moving your head along the melody, looking at him playfully.
"It's not so bad, come on" you insisted.
As the song started building up you could see how he started to subtly move his feet, trying to keep his word on not liking it and totally failing as he was clearly dying to dance. You started jumping around and vibing with the music on your own, and not a minute later Benny joined you.
"See? Don't pretend you don't like it" you laughed.
"Okay fine" he gave up.
You ended up dancing through half an album, having your own little party in his bedroom. You lost track of time and space, you were trapped in a moment, unaware of the real world outside that room. It was just Benny and you, and no one else. Your eyes were locked on him, watching him dance around you, hypnotized by his smile. You were filled with an overwhelming feeling you couldn't name, and just like that, it happened.
"Benny, I love you"
It wasn't silent, it wasn't loud, it wasn't planned. You didn't even feel nervous because it just came out accidentally.
The boy stopped and looked at you for a moment, making you get hit with reality, realizing what you had just said. You panicked, your face turning red. You rushed to cover it with your hands, but before you could say anything, Benny gently grabbed your wrists, pulling them away from your face. In a quick move, he got closer to you, and just like that, you couldn't have figured that his lips would meet yours in that instant.
The sudden hit of adrenaline was making you feel lightheaded, so Benny didn't take long to pull away, letting you breathe. You wanted to say something, but you didn't know what. You opened your mouth but shut it again as you saw how Benny turned away for a second to fist pump in the air as a sign of victory, which made you let out a quiet laugh that would turn loud as soon as Benny turned to look at you after using a spell to materialize a rose.
"You know your face is redder than the flower?" he mocked.
"Shut up Benny" you replied, taking the flower from his hands and leaning in for another kiss.
Maybe group homework and emo music weren't so bad if the hangout was gonna end like this.
