On the surface, aside from having somewhat similar names, Ms. Marvel and Mr. Fantastic also seem like they have the same power: they can stretch their bodies into any shape to suit their needs. But I find the minute differences in how their specific powers are depicted to work actually pretty interesting. Because while Mr. Fantastic often focuses on being a weird spaghetti monster that can stretch and morph to uncomfortable effect, Ms. Marvel's shapeshifting more often takes the form of a change in her proportions.
Kamala's iconic move is to "embiggen" specific parts of her body for a power boost. With bigger hands, she can punch harder. With bigger legs, she can step farther. Richards stretches out, but his individual parts tend to maintain the same proportions, whereas Ms. Marvel will just turn into a giant or scale down to the size of a mouse. And you don't really get the sense he gets "stronger" when he stretches out. He's just more thin, if anything. Kamala's power is not so much about stretching as it is about growing and shrinking individual areas of her body as needed, where mass = force. According to The Lore she's actually time traveling her mass every time she grows or shrinks, but that's pretty out there. Kamala DOES sometimes do the stretch thing to wrap around enemies or dodge attacks, but even in those cases it feels more like she's adding mass, extending rather than stretching. Not so much stretched out as just longer. You get the sense that Mr. Fantastic acts like rubber, while Ms. Marvel is more like a Photoshop transform tool... They can still look pretty similar depending on who's drawing them, though.
It's because she was originally an Inhuman but the Inhumans aren't popular. Ms. Marvel IS popular so they ended up distancing her from the Inhumans as much as possible, eventually making her an X-Man instead because the X-Men sell better. They then changed her powers in the MCU because light powers are cheaper to CG and test better with mainstream audiences than her weird gross shapeshifting, even though her powers being weird and gross is thematically important to her character. They then changed her comic powers to match the MCU ones for synergy's sake.
Kamala's often been a victim of her own success, executive mishandling squeezing all the nuance and intention out of her character. Many such cases. The suits will back off and we'll get a good writer for her again eventually. Hopefully. Her Tokon appearance having her classic shapeshifting powers and original costume is a good sign that the initial design intentions are iconic enough to survive. Just like Spider-Man never keeps organic webs, Ms. Marvel will retain her shapeshifting.
Well. The funny part is that she came out of a MAJOR push to bring inhumans to the center, by way of... having them be x-men. Like, while terrigen was a pre-existing thing, the whole "terrigen storms that randomly make people inhuman" thing was a very new concept that kinda just... made them conceptually the same as mutants, a random "empowering" event that could happen anywhere at any time. And this whole thing started bc some fucking exec at marvel HATED the X-Men... because Sony had their film rights and so they weren't making them more Disney Billions. And he wanted to shoehorn the Inhumans into being Basically Just X-Men so THEY could make Disney Billions instead. When he got fired this push went with him, and so inhumans got quietly shuffled back to Not That Much Prominence, and their biggest breakout got shuffled over to X-men territory.
That's interesting. I do think Ms. Marvel partially got so popular because she *wasn't* an X-Man back then. The X-Men have so much friggin lore that Kamala getting her origin far away from them probably helped with getting new people on board. It certainly made her more appealing to me.
I don't really mind Kamala being a mutant, it doesn't actually materially matter, but at this point it just feels super wrapped up with the powers thing, not to mention how her time with the X-Men feels like it strongly de-emphasized her individuality. It feels like she's just one of the dozens of rotating X-Men now. I miss Ms. Marvel, the hometown hero of Jersey City.

But I also know from personal experience, as an artist who mostly draws lesbians, that bigots will just project whatever they feel like onto your art and claim it as fact.
The thing with bigots is that they engage with art where they just assume everything is made for them and their ideology. Which is why they’re extremely hostile to queer/feminist art that’s more overt and unapologetic about its themes.
I vividly remembered dealing with a ton of homophobic straight men throwing a fit and insisting that my lesbian art was made for THEM. The concept of something made with a queer audience in mind didn’t even cross their mind.
It's always fun when an author claims their work contains no politics, because either they're blatantly lying, or they genuinely think they're telling the truth and you get a lot of insight into what assertions about human nature they regard as so obviously and self-evidently true as to lie outside the political sphere.
So what I think is that there's this default belief in patriarchy that men are superior to women and therefore the "masculine" sphere is superior to the "feminine" sphere. And so, as feminists have fought to expand the number of allowable female activities, men (on the aggregate over generations) have retreated from those activities because they're now seen as "feminine", and so partaking in them is incommensurate with their belief in their own superiority. And, unfortunately, as this has progressed, this has resulted in a lot of men sectioning themselves off from, frankly, everything that actually makes being alive worthwhile. It's a misery spiral, and the only way out is to abandon male supremacy.

oh a lot of it. back in 2016 Kamala founded her own superhero team, the Champions, and one of its core members was a time-displaced younger Cyclops (because comic books). young Cyclops went back to his own time eventually but the present-day Cyclops got all of young Cyclops' memories, so him and Kamala are like, retroactive lifelong friends now. one of young Cyclops' core conflicts was fear over knowing he'd become evil in the future, so the version of Cyclops that's in Tokon specifically being Phoenix Cyclops has a lot of drama potential.

I went digging and couldn't turn up anything, substantial or otherwise, about Matt Moylan. I need to know how low to place my expectations for my second favorite mega men, because it sounds like "pretty damn low"
Matt Moylan is the Director of Publishing over at Udon. He's been there for ages. He's also a total reactionary.
To give full context, this is gonna get a little long.
Moylan is perhaps best known for the Transformers fancomic Lil Formers, which was popular in the '00s and is still the namesake of his Twitter account to this day. This isn't super important here, but allow me to go on a tangent because it's where a lot of people know the guy from, and it's mildly more entertaining than just screencapping his tweets. The comic was basically just an excuse for him to draw a bunch of chibi Transformers that people would then use in forum signatures and whatnot. Sometimes he would attach his cranky old geewunner opinions and complain about art style changes or new female characters in the dialogue, if he wasn't just making a generic joke about Wheelie being annoying or Seaspray having a silly voice or whatever.
Comedy gold, I know.
Lil Formers was well known within the fandom. Geewunners and kids who didn't know any better and just liked the chibi Transformers (guilty) loved it. Other fans grew more annoyed by Moylan's schtick. As far back as 2009 TFWiki contributor David Willis mocked it in a strip from his own webcomic, Shortpacked:
His wiki page on TFWiki also recounts a bizarre old bit of fandom drama. Moylan had previously worked for the defunct comic publisher Dreamwave, who published the Transformers comics in the early '00s, and in 2006 he went on popular Transformers forum TFW2005 to make several claims about behind the scenes conflicts and unfulfilled story plans. Most bizarre was a claim that Autobot Sunstreaker was supposed to be gay in the Dreamwave comics, which was written off as a childish attempt to rile up the fandom. His claims were all disputed by the Dreamwave writers he was shit talking, who would also accuse Moylan of anonymously slandering them and sending them threatening emails. Swell guy!
Anyway, hopefully this isn't surprising to literally anyone who's been on a forum in the last decade, but this nerd who won't shut up about the Good Ol' Days of the '80s is now a reactionary conservative who complains about how they're making everything "woke." And unfortunately he's no longer just some guy drawing dumb little one-panel comics about Transformers, he's now overseeing all of the output at Capcom's go-to comic and art book publisher in North America.

After I and several other people posted about his behavior over on Bluesky and expressed disinterest in buying anything from Udon (such as the new Mega Man comics), he deleted his Twitter for like a week. He's since restored it, the tweets in question now long gone. Clearly it wasn't a good look for him to be making statements about his employer's values like this, sometimes in the same breath as announcements about new comics. That being said, he's issued no actual apology for his statements, and Udon hasn't acknowledged it at all. There's no reason to believe he's had a change of heart. They're just gonna pretend he never said any of this. And as of a few days ago, he's been announced as the writer for the one-shot Mega Man ZX comic that Udon is putting out later this year. Yaaaayyyy
I know there are a lot of cool people working on stuff for Udon, but Moylan being in a position of power there means I have zero interest in giving that company money. When your Director of Publishing is over on Twitter trying to court an audience of reactionary nerds and proudly proclaiming that Udon is "anti-woke, anti-DEI," and then you go to their website and the first image you see is this...
...Look, I love huge boobs as much as the next bisexual furry pervert, but this particular image in conjunction with his tweets paints a pretty clear picture of what sort of values Moylan is pushing at Udon. He wants to cater to nerds who will buy softcore Street Fighter hentai thinking it'll own the libs.
So hey, if he doesn't want my dirty woke money, fine by me. I'm not touching anything Udon publishes as long as Matt Moylan still works there.
sometimes it occurs to me that while "get bottom surgery and then use a strapon" is an obvious course of action for many trans lesbians, a lot of cis people would be extremely confused by the suggestion that someone would do this.
