Top 5 Best things to do to preserve your kite.
1. Don’t leave your kite out on the beach!, You crazy?
Ever seen a kite with stretch marks on the trailing edge and the color is fading?.Yeah?, That’s because of leaving it in the wind, salt and sun just flapping around all day. If you leave your kite out on the beach the material will eventually wear out. Unfortunately kites are not indestructible ;) 2. Check your surroundings,Bru!.
Sounds obvious but i’m sure you don’t check the beach and surrroundings every time you put your kite down ?, If you do then this tip is not for you!. The amount of times people bust their leading edge because of they didn’t check the spot is countless. Or for example people taking their pumped up kite to the beach and it gets stuck on something a rock, cactus or palmtree…
3. Wash your kite after your session!.
Wash everything on regularly bases (including the inside of the leading edge) in fresh water, that is the way to go. Salt crystals are sharp and abrasive and will eventually damage your kite!. Incase of Sea foam wash immediately in the sea, when you get home wash it with fresh water to maintain the color (if you don’t do this it will leave a salt stain).
4. Bridly Bridles
Check your bridles and line mounts on a regularly basis, last thing you want is that your bridles or line mounts snap. You don’t have bridles good it doesn’t concern you then but you still need to check your line mounts ;)
5. Forgetful Valves
Valves so important yet so small. Very important to know is that when you deflate your kite do not forget to make sure the deflate valve is open and the inflate valve is also. When you pack your kite away or start to pump your kite make sure you clean your valves and the mouth of the pump!.

Knee dislocation
So........A couple of days ago I thought it was a good idea to start our first morning of the roadtrip with a nice morning surf at vic bay near Wilderness together with my bro in crime @tommein.
Yeah...that....didn't turn out as I hoped it would...I just settled in the line up and was waiting for a wave. I had a conversation with one of the surfers next to me, I look up and I'm in the Perfect position for taking the wave. I start paddling and put my board diagonally on the wave so that when I stand up I can make a turn quicker.. Anyway as I am standing up I'm losing my balance and I'm thinking "shit, I really don't want to lose this wave" so I start pressing on the outside of my right foot trying to desperately save myself from falling. My board is slowly turning down the wave and as I am hitting the water my board turns to the opposite way to which I am falling my ankle snaps left with the board and so does the bottom of my leg, my upper leg on the otherhand decided to press forward together with my whole body and i fall to the right...next thing I feel is a large "pop". I hit the water and straight away feel something is wrong with my knee. I'm thinking in shock "shit, it's dislocated" after a couple of seconds which felt like minutes I re-surface above the water. So does my knee!.
I shout out because of what I see and I realize that it is dislocated! I scream and I start waving around to other surfers who come over and see what's wrong but the only reactions I get are "fuck, dude" "how do we get him to the shore " "get him on the board" "dude, get on your board " I look over and see a wave coming (and a rather big one).
There is a guy surfing the wave, he sees me just in time to bail and paddle back. The wave hits me, I let go and brace myself for the pain that's going to hit me again. I get thrown around underwater and pop up to see my knee is still out of its socket. As I'm trying to get back on my board to paddle in another huge wave hits me!!!.
I embrace myself again for the pain and as I'm getting thrown around I get a possible hit by my board on my dislocated knee and can feel a "pop" or "click" again.
I'm too scared to look so instead I scramble for my board, settle on my stomach and start paddling for the shore which is still about 50 to 80 meters away from me! I try to catch some white wash but fail and get tumbler again, right over my board. My knee is fine but I'm in total panic and shock. I struggle again to get back on my board but this time I managed to get close to the beach where other surfers were waiting for me.
I get to the shallow part of the beach and slowly scramble to my feet I look down to my knee and I can see that my knee popped back into its original position. "Awesome, I can put it down and walk back to the car"..... Yeah not so much!! As I try to stand up on it, I experience excruciating pain up and down my leg and I fall forward right in time for 2 surfers to catch me and help me hop towards the car
This was were it hit me... I realize that I've done something to my knee and it's BAD...
The 2 surfers help me hop to the car and I find my buddy Tom just getting changed at the car and he had no idea what was going on?! I get into the car and thank the 2 surfers for their help. Tom gets in the car and starts the 15 min drive back to the hostel.
We get to the hostel, its 8:30 am and I ask Tom to wake up mygirlfriend @amymcdowell. She tells me to get changed in the bathroom and rushes me to the nearest hospital in George (25 kilometers away).
After driving for 15 to 30 minutes we finally arrive at the hospital. We go in and about 4 to 5 hours later we walk out of the hospital with a 3 layer bandage around my leg and pain pills.
We get into the car and drive towards the closest Medi-clinic (private hospital) so that we could get some crutches because the public hospital didn’t have any available. After seeing a specialist we discovered that the swelling is due to a large amount of blood built up inside my knee. We also find out that i have rupturred all of the ligaments on the inside of my knee as well as possibly tearing my mcl and meniscus :(
Top 5 Best things to do to preserve your bar…
1. De-power Cord
It is important that we take care of our bars as it is one of the most valuable items of our equipment. One of the main componments on a bar is the De-power cord! Check regurarly that your entire de-power cord has enough wax. The reason for this is so that the cord will move much smoother and with less friction, therefore lasting longer. 2. Sandy swivel!
Try to keep your swivel clean and sand free! There’s not much more to say than that. When you come out of the water just hold your swivel under fresh water and rotate it a couple times from bottom to top in opposite directions and shake it a couple times until its smooth and sand free.
3. Check your lines
It is important that you check your lines before you get into the water! Check for fibers that might be fraying and check the thickness of your lines. Make sure you walk your lines out before a session to avoid tangling. 4. Washing the bar off!
When you come of the water it might be a good idea to regularly wash your bar. By doing so you will keep your bar clean of salt and any salt crystals. It will help your bar and lines to last longer!. 5. Safety is important!
ALWAYS check your emergency safety it has nothing to do with preserving your gear but its important that it works!. Clean it to make sure it is free of sand and Salt crystals!. And then Have Fun!! ;) If you have anymore questions about how to preserve your bar, Please feel free to let me know at www.facebook.com/johnnoscholte or Mail me at [email protected]
Top 5 Most beautiful kitesurfing spots surrounding Cape Town
1.DERDESTEEN A five-minute drive downwind from Big Bay is one of my favourite spots. Meaning 'third stone', make sure your keep your eyes open for the rocks underwater. I very often surf or SUP here, but when the wind kicks in the wave is great to kite. As a beach break, it's very shifty and changes quickly with the tide. On a good day you'll find very powerful, hollow waves and if you're lucky you might even get barrelled. 2.HAAKGAT Three kilometres downwind from Big Bay, this is my go-to regular wave spot. It can pretty much handle any size swell and although it gets pretty bumpy on the windy days, if you time it just right the wave will give you a long ride from the point all the way in to the beach. I always call this spot 'Little Italy' as there are so many Italian windsurfers hanging around in speedos! I also heard they're building a pizza place at the parking lot - not such a bad thing... 3.MISTY CLIFFS/WITSAND On a NW wind it comes straight over the mountains, so it can be gusty, but the waves can be really nice. This coast also picks up more swell than Big Bay as it's more open to the ocean. Be careful to not crash your kite here in a NW as it will end up on the rocks. It's a little safer in a SE wind as your kite or board will just land on the beach, but the waves aren't quite as clean. Also keep an eye out for the sharkies because they like this spot, too. 4.PLATBOOM (Cape Point) I don't ride this spot very often, but when you score it you can really score it! Located within Table Mountain National Park, you have to pay to kite, but once you are in, it's worth every penny. The surroundings are picture perfect. There is a little beach to launch your kite but beware of the rocks; this is definitely not a spot for beginners. Working best in a SE wind and a SW swell, it will pick up the most swell in the area as it's located at the most SW point of the African continent. 5.WITSAND (Breede River) Although quite a drive (3.5 - 4 hours), it's like a dream spot. The water is as flat as it gets as the wind blows over a sandbar in the SE wind, so is perfect for freestyle. It's also very easy to kite here and a good place to learn some new tricks, but don't lie in the water for too long because the sharks like this spot, too. The last time I was there they recorded the biggest Bull shark ever in the system, but luckily I didn't see it. Resource: www.redbullkingoftheair.com
