Trap is the love child of hip hop and EDM
I think we all know the Harlem Shake by Baauer - first trap song to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Essentially a lot of this:
DJ Scream says the genre and the term "trap" came from the south, mostly from Atlanta. It pretty much means your in a place where you can make some money but you're trapped cause you can get shot at, killed, your partners gonna come get you, your enemy's gonna come get you the police are gonna get you. It's the trap. Since the trap isn't a happy place, the sound of the genre is really gritty
Original trap artists include E-40, Trap-A-Holics, Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame and Three Six Mafia before EDM became incorporated into today's trap. It took until 2003 before original trap was introduced to the mainstream. T.I.'s album Trap Muzik sold over 2.1 million copies.
EDM became incorporated around 2012, and trap ended up catching on faster than dubstep or electro. "It's energetic but not overwhelming like dustup, but still has the dirtiness." The internet has a lot to do with the growing popularity of this genre with websites like SoundCloud, but two websites in particular are aiming at not just finding the music and promoting it, but going to the artists and setting the stage for the production of new trap music.
Livemixtapes.com and Clubtapes.com link up with big names in rap music to show them EDM trap like Flosstradomus' remix of Major Lazer and introduce the direction trap is taking. Their goal is to show them awesome EDM trap beats that these new producers are making now based on what the hip hop producers were making in the 2000s and hopefully merge the two communities.
They ended up introducing Flosstradomous and Trap-A-Holics of Livemixtapes at the Philly Block Party, and combined the two trap communities, one more EMD based and the other more hip hop based. Flosstradomous had been a big fan of Trap-A-Holics, he has worked with Wokka Flokka, Nicky Minaj, Juicy J (just to name a few) and so with his huge rep in the scene, introducing EDM there put the fire under the ass of EDM trap. He called it a "fresh of breath air" but yeah, got it.
