I did a design like this previously, but I left the pink triangle fully pink, but I think adding a trans flag to it really makes the messaging clear
This comic made my loved ones ask what I need to yell at them about
totally fine if you don’t want to share but do you have tips for wording communications to our representatives? I only heard the news ten minutes ago and I just. Cannot find language even though I know I should. I don’t think leaving a profanity laden voice mail is going to be productive.
Put on your professionalism pants first of all.
The political leaning of your representative should probably dictate the sort of angle you take. Either way, mention how much you love your region and where you live and speak as a concerned citizen of your specific region. If you have kids, possibly mention that if you can fit it in organically. People really care about the children and concerns specific to their district.
If your representative is a democrat, you can probably be fully honest as long as you're polite and don't cuss. They also hate Tonald Drump.
If your representative is a republican, it's probably good to spin your tale around national security and America being independent, especially if your letter is about the batshit Maduro incident. If you're fine with it, maybe toss a god bless in there somewhere. Especially if your representative is a known evangelical or something like that. In that case, if you are a Christian maybe also mention that but I'd only suggest it if your representative is a known Evangelical or christo-fascist. If you're queer or non-Christian I'd leave that out of your email.
Keep your message short and sweet but descriptive. Probably around two paragraphs. This makes it more likely someone will read it, and some websites have a character limit for emails. Be Specific about what you're opposing and why.
To express your rage, use words and phrases like outrage, disgrace, stain on our country, strongly oppose, deeply concerns, and so on. And ask them to oppose what's happening at every opportunity.
Many years ago, I was the first point of contact for all phone calls/emails/mail for a sitting congressman.
And I’ll let you in on a little secret - you don’t even have to do this much. Two whole paragraphs? Sure, but unnecessary. The congressman will never read it, only me.
What I did with all correspondence was in essence tally how many people were for or against whatever the issue was.
There are only three points you NEED to hit:
‘Hi, I’m First Name from City In The District’ - because if I suspected you weren’t local, I didn’t count you
‘I’m concerned about issue’ - let’s me know the topic
‘This is what I want you to do about it’ - tells me how to file it as pro/against or advocating specific action
And that’s it. I’d report to the congressman stats. MAYBE a quote highlighting the general tone of what I was seeing, but I had A LOT of discretion as a 22 year old on what I was passing along. Mostly it was ‘we got 17 emails requesting you vote for this bill and only 3 against, mostly from this area’ etc.
So please don’t get hung up about being eloquent or convincing or saying the exact right things to influence someone. The most important thing is that you, local voter, call and say I’m angry about this and this is what you should do. It’s the number of calls, not your eloquence.

As is tradition in tumblr culture the locals unearth the corpse of a long deceased figure and drag it across the streets merrily, laughing at what is preserved of the person’s words. This custom, seen as morbid in other cultures, is instead done gleefully and with an unmatched enthusiasm

DO NOT COME TO THE US FOR TOURISM!!!!!!
Tourists from countries including Britain, Japan, France, and Australia will now be expected to provide their social media history to visit
Plan would apply to countries not currently required to get visas to the US, including Britain and France

This is a PROPOSAL available for public comment via email until February 9, 2026. Write in; don't just roll over and let it slide by unopposed.
"Written comments and suggestions from the public and affected agencies should address one or more of the following four points:
(1) whether the proposed collection of information is necessary for the proper performance of the functions of the agency, including whether the information will have practical utility;
(2) the accuracy of the agency's estimate of the burden of the proposed collection of information, including the validity of the methodology and assumptions used;
(3) suggestions to enhance the quality, utility, and clarity of the information to be collected;
and (4) suggestions to minimize the burden of the collection of information on those who are to respond, including through the use of appropriate automated, electronic, mechanical, or other technological collection techniques or other forms of information technology, e.g., permitting electronic submission of responses."
Please leave effective comments that emphasize how wasteful this is!
The man who won't rest until the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is cleaned up has successfully tested his system for doing so.
““The Great Pacific Garbage Patch can now be cleaned,” announced Dutch entrepreneur Boyan Slat, the wonderkid inventor who’s spent a decade inventing systems for waterborne litter collection.
Recent tests on his Ocean Cleanup rig called System 002, invented to tackle the 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic pollution, were a success, leading Slat to predict that most of the oceanic garbage patches could be removed by 2040.
Intersections of ocean currents have created the massive floating islands of plastic trash—five slow-moving whirlpools that pull litter from thousands of miles away into a single radius.
The largest one sits between California and Hawaii, and 27-year-old Slat has been designing and testing his systems out there, launching from San Francisco since 2013.
GNN has reported on his original design for the floating device, but his engineering team improved upon it. System 002, nicknamed “Jenny,” successfully netted 9,000 kilograms, or around 20,000 pounds in its first trial.
It’s carbon-neutral, able to capture microplastics as small as 1 millimeter in diameter, and was designed to pose absolutely no threat to wildlife thanks to its wide capture area, slow motion, alerts, and camera monitors that allow operators to spy any overly-curious marine life…
Slat estimates ten Jennies could clean half the garbage patch in five years, and if 10 Jennies were deployed to the five major ocean gyres, then 90% of all floating plastic could be removed by 2040.” -via Good News Network, 10/19/21
Recent update from this org: they’ve launched System 03 (in 2023) and have gone on over 100 expeditions and collected over 1 million pounds of trash! They also are working on cleaning up rivers :)

So the kasha is a yōkai shaped like a cat who steals corpses out of coffins during funerals. You can trick them by doing a dummy run with a big rock in the coffin. Originally, the kasha was a burning chariot that carried souls to hell. It gradually turned into a fiery cat for reasons that are unclear. The fact that it looks like my cat Winton is no comment on his character no siree absolutely not.

The linked article
This article is genuinely insane. I learned to read at the same time and it was completely different. I was taught to sound out the words and if I came across a word I didn't know, they did suggest we use context clues to figure out the meaning, but it was also made clear that that was not a perfect solution and the best option is always to look it up. But seriously, just a memorizing? That is inside.
I taught English as a second language for over ten years. In order to become a proficient reader in English, most kids will need to be explicitly taught phonics. To become proficient in Japanese, you need to learn radicals.
Three-cueing is essentially crutches that help you get by but let you down eventually. It's very common when learning a foreign language, I misread kanji sometimes because I pattern-recognize based on context instead of really looking. The solution is to do some proper studying, but I don't wanna.
It's also interesting that this sort of contexual confabulation and pattern-recognizing is how LLMs work. Not sure what to do with that.
Absolutely fantastic article, but I do want to say that this...?
... Is absolutely terrifying in the context of all other anti-intellectualism happening right now. This guy is STILL pushing his 'observations' while denying evidence that it doesn't work.
Woman in the article with a genuine and apparently severe reading disability talking about how she taught herself to read as a child too ashamed to ask for help because she was brilliant and excelling everywhere else in the 1990's:
Strategy 1: Memorize as many words as possible. "Words were like pictures to me," she said. "I had a really good memory."
Strategy 2: Guess the words based on context. If she came across a word she didn't have in her visual memory bank, she'd look at the first letter and come up with a word that seemed to make sense. Reading was kind of like a game of 20 Questions: What word could this be?
Strategy 3: If all else failed, she'd skip the words she didn't know.
That same woman observing her child being taught to read by a teacher in 2019:
"I thought, 'Oh my God, those are my strategies.' Those are the things I taught myself to look like a good reader, not the things that good readers do," she said. "These kids were being taught my dirty little secrets."
WTF?
Children should not be taught how to read with the half-assed, impromptu methods a child bad at it uses to cope on their own and make up for their inability. That will NEVER teach them to read the right way.
Goodman rejected the idea that reading is a precise process that involves exact or detailed perception of letters or words. Instead, he argued that as people read, they make predictions about the words on the page using these three cues:
graphic cues (what do the letters tell you about what the word might be?)
syntactic cues (what kind of word could it be, for example, a noun or a verb?)
semantic cues (what word would make sense here, based on the context?)
This is a deeply egotistical man with a learning disability trying to validate himself and make himself the norm.
There's nothing wrong with a learning disability of any kind, but forcing the way someone copes with that to be the way EVERYONE is taught the material is.
Reading and writing ARE precise processes with clear steps and guidelines, not a GUESSING GAME.
Huh, that's abruptly explained a thing that's been driving me mad for years, when people are reading aloud something I've written and they just say completely the wrong word. Instead of actually reading it, they're guessing what it might be. Jesus fucking Christ.
i want to copy this from the replies, because i've read all these articles and listened to the whole Sold a Story podcast on this issue and this paragraph does a good job summing up what exactly went wrong, to my understanding at least:
by the way three-cueing or whole language reading started in the 70s. In New Zealand. It was picked up by a very small number of people in America, like Lucy Calkins, who were very good at selling and marketing and were able to convince entire school districts to use their curriculums. No Child Left Behind was drafted with the intent to eliminate three-cueing from national curriculums. Instead, the specific people selling these curriculums changed the wording so the schools they sold to could still qualify for federal funding. Even now, with the literacy crisis at its height, Lucy Calkins only now deigns to admit that her method did not keep up with research… despite it being proven by the 90s that her method was gravely ineffectual, despite her being told this, despite her directly refusing all requests to change her methodology
The Thanksgiving Myth
The "friendly Indians", that kids all across the US dress up as in generic stereotypical caricature "Indian" costumes in the week leading to Thanksgiving, are not characters in a play, or people of the past. They are the Wampanoag Tribes— learn their history today.

I don’t know what this possum has been up to and I’m scared to ask.
There are times when it feels like this particular possum has seized control of my brain. For example: I had an amazing time at the zine fair and was happily exhausted, yet somehow found myself awake at 1am reading a long New Yorker article about John Wayne Gary from 1994.
