There's always a moment of intense cultural whiplash whenever I realize I'm talking to someone who thinks "legal" and "illegal" are meaningful categories and ascribes innate goodness to following the law. It's like meeting a space alien.

it'll never not fucking kill me that in the munich les mis production grantaire waves the red flag in one day more. grantaire. waves the flag. he's up on a platform and everything. not at the very top of it bc that's for javert. but to his left and a bit below. with the flag. grantaire. also the actor is blond and wearing a costume near-identical to two other blond guys from les amis and enjolras, who is also blond but his coat is darker. the director just said 'can i have five more of these little blond bitches please?' and rolled with it. anyway. grantaire waving the flag in one day more. enjolras isn't waving it btw. he's just holding it at the right side downstage but he's not waving it and it droops down. man.
Happy Barricade Day! Here's to the only time I've had new art for it!
Les Misérables | Attack On The Barricade Watercolor illustration by Gino Stabace and Carlo Chiostri (Italian Edition, 1930)
"...he sat down, leaned on a table near the window, looked at Enjolras with an indescribable gentleness, and said to him, 'Let me sleep here.'
'Go sleep somewhere else,' cried Enjolras.
But Grantaire, keeping his tender, troubled eyes fixed on him, answered, 'Let me sleep here - until I die here."

Barricade day!!!
Alexandr Alexeevich Borisov - Seals (1912)
From the diaries of the artist: «It was very difficult to work; I had to cut the brushes, make the bristle short, rub the colors was almost inconceivable. <… > The hand is cracking, it is breaking; the roaring hands refuse to serve. But you draw, all thirsty to put on the canvas these bizarre, gloomy, full of peculiar beauty paintings of the Far North» (source)

A Group Which Almost Became Historic
It's been over a decade since I first read Les Mis, and first drew this, (which still floats around in reblogs, the original post now being deleted with my old blog) and I thought I ought to finish this for Barricade Day. At the time, that illustration was the most ambitious I had ever drawn.
In the last ten years, Les Mis has perhaps felt more pertinent than ever. In Australia, where I live, bigoted, far-right political parties that were previously considered fringe are leading polls on the back of racist, anti-immigration rhetoric. I donate regularly to a charity that supports refugees that is local to me, the Asylum Seeker Resource Center, and am going to do so again today. I encourage you to do the same, either to the ASRC, or to an equivalent charity in your area.
"So long as there shall exist, by virtue of law and custom, decrees of damnation pronounced by society, artificially creating hells amid the civilization of earth... books of the nature of Les Misérables cannot fail to be of use." — Victor Hugo
