you know that meme where a guy points at his girlfriend like āthis oneās for you babeā and completely misses the shot? thatās wick trying to impress thimble, except the ball bounces off a pole or something and makes it in the basket anyways.
This is a lore drop on Cooldown so I understand why this wasn't incorporated into the Halovar theories. But, here's what Brennan told us:
The full quote: "In this world wizardry only exists, prior to the end of the Shapers' War the only wizards were aasimar or other beings that were partially divine that could read the words of power, but when the Shapers existed, the words of power were literally not legible to mortal beings."
Words of Power were only accessible to those with divine heritage. And here's another key lore drop:
When Tansul was divvying up his gifts, he gave the Tachonis a House in the Tenebral Reaches (notably not within his afterlife realm of the Golden Sky), and he gave the Halovar their very own angel.
So pre Shaper's fall, Yanessa had access to a being that could read the Words of Power, who could effectively teach her those words even if she couldn't read the Words herself. And then when the Shaper's died, Yanessa had a leg up. The Words were not only made legible to her, she was familiar with them. Maybe even Halovar was given a library of books to keep, because Goddard and his children may not be the first batch of Aasimars the Halovar have produced.
If it is true that Aetheon has looked after the Halovars for ages upon ages, maybe even built specifically for them, then what Yanessa did with Goddard was likely... A refurbished tradition. Aetheon couldn't make babies the old fashioned way so Yanessa took Words of Power to turkey baste her way into having a baby.
The rest of the non-Aasimar Halovars likely have Celestial Warlock as their source of power. And this has been the case since Tansul's time. But when Tansul died, that source of power went poof. So Yanessa pivoted. She used Aetheon as an anchor, might as well make him useful. Then she tattooed the contract onto her kin.
Aetheon is a construct with ties to the Domain of Order. His programming got corrupted severely without user input (i.e. Tansul), but his battery is still running.
Because here's another curious fact to consider. Aetheon kept his celestial powers. So clearly, he's not getting his from no Shaper. And we have an extraordinary hint as to where his abilities come from. What Tansul and other Shapers did when they created their angel was they stole. They stole the blueprints of djinn and eefreet (the servants of Primordials).
E16 quote from Dr. Talter: "But, however, the original spirits of service to the great Shapers were actually the original djinn and efreet of the primordials. Which we have some indication actually predates the earliest fossilized records, the remains of celestials and those we've been able to find or potentially harvest. "
But then, the Shapers connected the batteries for their little toys to the domains - the very same domains that Dr. Talter prays to.
So Yanessa went alright. Everyone pivot. She anchored the new generation of Halovars, post Tansul, onto Aetheon whose battery connected him to a non Shaper source of power. For all the rest, she gave them to demons.
She could also be dual classing, warlock wizard bullshit.
But for herself, specifically, she learned Words of Power before everyone else. She might be this world's only 20 Lvl Wizard because she has been studying from divine adjacent relatives when she wasn't allowed to read.
Pulling this out of tags: It's fun that every time Wicander/Sam caught out Tsul'rekshi on the rules established on their Game of Questions, she kept saying "You really are the blood of angels!" because yeah! Angels are orderly and big rule followers!
Like, it really vibes with Wick being a Clockwork Sorcerer instead of Divine Soul.
The celestials of AramƔn were all divine constructs, built with parameters and rules and a rigidity to what they could be. Made to serve the Shapers and upkeep their order. And that construct of the divine nature is what they can pass on to their sorcerer/aasimar bloodlines, their power and purpose to keep (the Shapers') order.
So what Wick has is not the many blessings of the divine that make a Divine Soul Sorcerer (aka no-faith Cleric depending on spell choices), but a bloodline from a biological construct with the imperative to keep order.
While I definitely miss the Soldiers being together, I am LOVING Wick's cleverness being able to shine now that he's in a more familiar environment. He's not good at breaking rules, but he's really good at taking rules and turning them in his favor.
honestly our proper introduction to iris being through her checking in on halās play is a brilliant choice, bc weāve only ever seen this sweet woman through wickās eyes and now, here she is, participating in something truly heinous and awful against one of our characters.
