Hey-o! Tumblr doesn’t seem to like external links, so I figured I’d compile all my fics/links in one post.

i just saw the tag “canon complicit” instead of “canon compliant” and im laughing its like “canon is a criminal act that i unfortunately support with this fic”
The Three Grades:
Canon Compliant: “This fic goes along with canon.” (Because I like it? Because I’m too tired to disagree by writing my own fic? Who knows? The author may or may not tell us.)
Canon Compatible: “Listen, I know it ISN’T canon, but think of it as Microsoft Office for Mac, it’s COMPATIBLE with canon, and that counts.”
Canon Complicit: “I have not died a hero, so I have become an accessory to the Villainy of Canon.”
Canon Compatible is a great term for when your fic is Probably Not What Tolkien Would Have Wanted but it doesn’t really contradict anything in canon either
#you can install this fic without canon crashing and that’s what matters
Tbh I think fandom generally needs to get better at sitting with the uncomfortable fact that a story/fanwork/meme/whatever can hurt one person and help another
This is why I think “tag warning” culture is kinder and more constructive than cancel culture / “no problematic content” culture. One size does not fit all, but if we learn to be more aware of the fact that the same thing can be emotionally validating or cathartic to one person and upsetting to another, and pick up a general mindset of thinking before we post, “what might people need a heads up for in this content?”, we grow more compassionate, more thoughtful, and more understanding of the differences in people’s experiences.

FYI 'write what you know' has always been about writing from a legitimate place of emotion and thought and projecting that onto a bigger canvas, not limiting yourself.
Sure wish I’d known been taught that in high school, by the people who taught me “write what you know” in the first place.
A biiig problem is that most people who repeat this piece of advice don't really know what it means, and boil it down to 'you can only write what you've experienced.'
But the real point is to take that rough year of your life, that day where everything went wrong, or that happy moment you always think of and spin it into something beyond yourself.
Don't write the character who is completely different from you because you're worried about Mary Sues - instead, tuck pieces of yourself within them, so you can understand how they feel even if you'd never be in their shoes.
Had a rough first year of college? Take the emotional up and downs of that and project them onto someone learning the ins and outs of learning zombie survivalism, being the first human at an alien school, or having to save a kingdom from a curse of its own making.
Whether you're writing historical fiction, a video game script, or a coffeeshop AU, your ability to make those things seem authentic lies in your ability to understand and relate to how the characters feel.
THAT'S what 'write what you know' is suppose to mean.
It also means ‘do your research’.
Like, nobody expects you to have truly experienced the Tudor period, but they’re going to take issue with your work if you don’t at least spend a couple of hours checking what food was eaten then and what items of clothing were called.
You aren’t limited to writing what you know, but do make an effort to know something about what you’re writing.

To be fair, changing your mind about where a story’s going based on reader predictions isn’t always bad. Sure, it’s not great if you’re all “oh, no, they figured it out, now I have to change everything because my readers aren’t allowed to be cleverer than me” – but on the other hand, sometimes a reader will be like “okay, here’s the dumbest possible way I can imagine this playing out”, and then their dumbest possible prediction is exactly what you’re planning, and you realise that yeah, now that you’ve seen it laid out by someone who isn’t the voice in your head, that’s actually super dumb.
Other variations that don’t just boil down to deliberately frustrating reader expectations include:
Changing the outcome because a reader was like “I really hope this doesn’t happen”, and on consideration you realise that you also hope that doesn’t happen
Changing the outcome because a reader was thinking further ahead than you are and spotted an implication of a forthcoming plot point that you don’t like the smell of
Changing the outcome because a reader’s prediction drew your attention to the fact that your planned resolution would have stumbled dick-first into a massive plot hole
Changing the outcome because a reader picked up on a bunch of blatant foreshadowing and symbolism you didn’t notice you’d put there because your subconscious forgot to send a memo
Changing the outcome because a reader proposed such an elegant solution to a legitimately thorny narrative problem that it would feel petty not to let them be right
Changing the outcome because a reader was like “hey, you know what would be really fucked up?” and the bastard gremlin that lives in your brain started smirking like the fucking Grinch

Dracudate is a short film that centers around Lilith, a Trans Lesbian vampire and her date with her crush, Lou. It’s not long before Lilith runs into trouble when she bumps into the Monster Hunter, Sal. Lilith must now escape from the Hunter while also hiding her identity from Lou, which proves pretty difficult. Will she be able to save the date and keep away from the clutches of the Hunter?

concept: super forgetful Elias
imagine Elias just knowing so much about everything that exists ever and it's so much information and so much more important than other things, so he’s actually really forgetful about other things. i.e. he never knows where any little things are in his apartment or whether he’s done certain tasks yet and stuff like that. like,,, the apocalypse is a pretty important thing to think about. why would something little like whether you’ve gone grocery shopping recently or fed the fish dinner yet?
so he's basically like, calling Peter every two seconds like "hey where did you put the cinnamon" or “question: why is my underwear on top of the tv" ("answer: you got distracted Seeing Jon do something stupid again and put them down there while you were folding laundry you short evil dipshit")
"where is the extra toilet paper you bought the other day? it isn't in the usual cabinet" "hm let's see now where did I leave the kazoo I play to drown out Tim whenever he says something angsty" "oh gosh diddly darn it I've lost my murder pipe again"
sometimes I think about how my peak in internet popularity came from shitty-ass Wattpad fanfics from middle school and I weep
Reading Fic Pre-Posting: No typos whatsoever. Reads well. Flows beautifully. I have definitely found all possible spelling and grammar errors.
Reading Fic After Posting: A typo every three lines. Ten grammatical errors. Switches tense twice. POV changes for no discernible reason. Uses the word “look” five times in one sentence.
