This is the most beautiful scientific diagram I've ever seen.
Also a great example of why pink is a tint of red, but also a completely different color. Erbium? Neodymium? So beautiful.
Reblog this and tell me what was your biggest crying over a piece of fiction. You can be vague if you don't want to spoil.
“There’s simply no room for me to park my hellcat” wins best in show for me.
something i've noticed that has become really annoying in the past 10 years or so is this fad of what i've been calling, for lack of a better word, "structural whataboutism." it's that thing where, when faced with a concrete, resolvable problem in your community, your answer is to blame it on a vast, unsolvable issue of structural inequality and then throw up your hands. "there's trash all over the ground in this corner of the park" becomes "well, that's where MEN OF COLOR congregate after their 12-HOUR GRAVEYARD SHIFTS and i'm not going to support a CARCERAL SOLUTION to a CAPITALISTIC PROBLEM. WE NEED TO ELIMINATE POVERTY AND THE SUBJUGATION OF THE WORKING CLASS" and it's like okay but sis. someone still has to go pick up the trash. we don't need a carceral solution, we need more trash cans. you're not going to eliminate poverty and the subjugation of the working class and even if ya did, there would still be trash on the ground. how any of this passes for radicalism within their peer groups i simply don't understand. it's radical laziness more than anything else
I was on a canoe trip once with a river biologist who worked for the county. After we found and removed a car tire, she started talking about the annual river cleanup her department organized. From a water quality or ecological standpoint, removing shopping carts, car tires, and other macro trash from the river really wasn't that important, she said. The real threat to the river was industrial and agricultural runoff.
"But!" she said:
People who see a clean, trash-free river are more likely support laws to curb more harmful "systemic" forms of pollution. People who participate in river cleanups take pride in their work--their river!--and become evangelists for protecting it.
Immediate action leads to systemic awareness, which leads to systemic change.

At a certain point I genuinely don’t know how to keep going, like there is genuinely NOTHING we can do is there, like how can I see shit like this and just… keep going, every fucking day it’s just more and more shit showing how the Earth is probably never going to recover from humanity, and then nothing will change because the only ones who care can’t do Jack shit.
I just really don’t know to keep going in a world that will end probably before I do
no no no! there are absolutely things you can do.
everything you do matters! what you do counts! you won't be the only person doing it and you won't be the only person who cares!
there are things you can do big and small but also advocacy and having the conversation is necessary too. something like 89% of people are at least somewhat worried about climate change and want more to be done about it but since people aren't talking about it regularly, they think they are the only ones who care.
and the world is actually doing a lot. so far, we've avoided the worst projections (although current projections are still pretty catastrophic) due to changes that have been taking place.
the united states is the biggest holdout right now but most of the rest of the world is—to varying degrees—trying to transition away from fossil fuels, which is like the main thing we have to do. and actually, even the u.s. is moving towards renewable energy despite the current administration's backwards bloviating idiocy (for example, texas generated more power last year through solar energy than coal for the first time ever. turns out renewable energy is just economically more stable and worth investing in and these constant energy shocks from pointless wars aren't helping the case to continue burning fossil fuels for energy.)
i just really want to hammer home to everybody that the doomerist message that there is nothing we can do is literally how oil and gas companies want everyone to feel. they want you to feel there is no solution, that you are powerless, that the changes are too hard or will interrupt your comfort and convenience, that the changes are too expensive, that your choices don't matter at all, so that the changes that need to happen don't happen. but they are happening! right now.
(btw, this is an area where it really does matter who you vote for, locally and nationally.)
over the next little while, i'm going to try and post more content about what the world is doing and where we are succeeding in this.
because this content is not reaching the people who need it. the mainstream news sucks. social media algorithms suck. nothing viral or popular on any algorithm-driven social media platform is reaching your eyes organically—and its been that way for close to a decade. the entertainment outlets are filling our brains with disaster movies and stories where things go wrong and too much of the time the only solution is some hero or return to the status quo or whatever. we've destroyed the sense of community that helps people feel like what they do matters and realize that other people care about the same things they do and are willing to work towards similar goals. our myths and media are fucked and they've seriously fucked up our brains.
where we are at now: the climate is already changing. we're too late to stop that from happening at all. it's been happening for some time and we knew about it and we had solutions but the world has been stupid drunk on oil and gas and capitalism incentivizes the worst anti-social behaviour and organizing society around private profit turns out to produce terrible and stupid results.
now we have really good efficient solutions and they are (in many cases, still too slowly) being implemented. it is not too late to stop making the climate worse, to move the direction to a habitable future, and to adapt society to the new world we are coming into.
i know it seems hard because there is still a mountain to climb. the military and billionaires are farting out greenhouse gases as if none of this matters. (again, capitalism puts the worst among us at the top.) idiot conservatives who refuse to learn anything new are denying science and bringing idiocracy to life. (didn't even require the eugenics.) but we're already climbing this mountain. we've started climbing it already. so get those fucking boots on and let's fucking gooo!
My version of the Loupy Cardi, i promise i’m really chill about it (i’m really not i cant stop talking about it). I was so hyperfixated on it that i knitted it in exactly 9 days……. my wrists hurt….
it's so pretty
Blue Octopus and Japanese Catfish (2023) by Hiné Mizushima.
ok!!! I have some exceedingly crackpot WoT show theories. Herein lies musings on Siuan Sanche....full book spoilers!
Since Siuan Sanche has been in the season less than I would have expected, and I keep seeing posts talking about her scheduling difficulties, I wonder if...
a. Siuan will be actually killed off in the coup. Moiraine has gotten pieces of Siuan's post-stilling plot points (being stilled (pseudo-stilled or no!); Logain and the Be Productive Now, Kill Yourself Later speech), so I wonder if Leane will take over all of Siuan and Leane's combined Salidar plots. It would be doable, and so very painful for Moiraine!!
b. If they don't actually kill off Siuan, I wonder if they're going to recast her and Leane and go with the whole "Stilled Aes Sedai are all-but-unrecognizable because they suddenly look young again" book plot. Either way, I don't know if Sophie Okonedo is going to be in the whole show. I would personally prefer a re-cast to Siuan being killed off, but it would make sense for the sprawling later cast to be condensed more and theirs are relatively easy plotlines to merge.
c. Less a theory, more commentary: I really really don't think they're gonna do the whole Siuan/Gareth, Moiraine/Thom endgames. My fingers are crossed for those relationships to be cut!!
d. Where is Thom, anyway? I would like to see him.
oh my god I forgot that I totally called Siuan's show!plot
@solipseismic thank u for the insight 🫡
I wish people were as scared of getting into a car accident as they are of being true crime'd. Maybe then they wouldn't be on their phones while driving.

Last month I started a new italian chemise as a nice handsewing project to take on holiday. I love my shortened white chemise so much I wanted one in black with long sleeves.
For this one I'm one again taking the trouble to do the gathering as small and neatly as possible. It takes ages, but isn't it pretty!
